LEARNING AND TEACHING.”

INTRODUCTION

Education is one of the most important aspect of life a human being could have.
When it comes to humanity, it is one of the most vital which could provide human basic
skills and thinking skills about a certain matter. Education is a process of exploring
learner’s potential to grow, conceptual learning effectively and make a positive
difference at individual and societal level by virtue of their learning. The main purpose of
educational institutions particularly schools is to create and provide an environment
conducive for student’s learning.

For this purpose, teachers are responsible for highlighting student’s strengths
and needs improvement areas, as thee supports or hindrances student’s learning. Thus,
assessment has a central and paramount role in extending support to student’s learning
outcomes. Teachers’ relevant assistance and guidance based on the assessment data
become very significant in enhancing student’s learning.

Assessment is a critical step in the learning process. It determines whether or not

the course’s learning objectives have been met. A learning objective is what students’
should know or be able to do by the time a lesson is completed. Assessment affects
many facets of education, including student grades, placement, and advancement as
well as curriculum, instructional needs, and school funding.

Whether teaching at the all levels elementary, high school, college,

undergraduate or graduate levels, it is important for teachers and instructors to evaluate
the effectiveness of their teaching strategically by measuring the extent to which
students in the classroom are learning the course material.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION

It is proven that assessment contributes positive impacts and clear pathway or

roadmap to determine whether a teaching strategy is effective and whether a teaching
strategy has made the students able to learn and absorb information effectively.
Assessment not only measures students’ and teachers’ efficiency in teaching and
learning respectively, it also provides progress to teachers’ adjustments in choosing
effective teaching strategy based on assessments as well as it also drives students to
cope up with various teaching strategy and determine within themselves which teaching
method they can easily understand and absorb.

 Assessment is important for several reasons

1. Assessment result provide qualitative information that helps faculty determine

how they might improve courses and/or programs through changes in curriculum,
teaching methodologies, course materials for other areas. When integrated into the
planning cycle for curriculum development and review, assessment results can provide
powerful rationale for securing support for curricular and other changes.

2. Assessment may provide comparative data that can give you valuable
information on how well your students are meeting the learning outcomes for your
course/program.

3. It brings out the benefits for children gathering accurate information from young
children is difficult and potentially stressful.

 Gibbs (2003) states that assessment has several main functions:

1. Capturing student’s time and attention.

2. Generating appropriate student learning activity.

3. Provides timely feedback which students pay attention to.

4. Helping students to internalize the disciplines, standards, and notion of equality.

5. Generating marks or grades which distinguish between students or enable

pass/fail decisions to be made.
ANALYSIS

It is evident that assessment has a relationship with teaching and learning. It is

obvious that without assessment, a teacher cannot determine whether the student’s
learn or didn’t or whether the student has understood the information delivered by the
teacher. Without assessing students after a particular lesson, there will be no basis that
determines if the particular teaching method used for that lesson delivers clear and
understandable information.

Based on the background information, assessment really has a relationship to

learning and teaching and it can be clearly seen in its importance. Generally speaking,
assessment is the instrument which teachers use to rate and evaluate the quality of
their teaching. It is used to gather data of the student’s through exams, quizzes, and
other activities that measures their natural intelligence, capability of learning and
potential for adopting to new learning practices. Through assessing student’s learning
outcomes, it could be determined which specific teaching method that affects their
performance in learning.

Also, assessment helps an education institution to broadly modify and improve

their quality of providing education through their curriculum planning and more
specifically within every faculty’s course syllabus to improve every teacher’s teaching
strategies and base it on the outcomes and results of their students’ learning
performances which has reflected to their used teaching practice.

Assessment as related to teaching and learning, it is used to complete a learning

process through highlighting teachers’ and students’ strength and weaknesses that
could hinder education quality and could obstruct the flow of correct information through
the society. Because learning and teaching as a main part of education system needs
comprehensive and clear data gathering and provide appropriate learning environment
through its assessment procedures and strategies.
CONCLUSION

Assessment is a critical aspect of teaching and learning process which aims to

collect, interpret and analyze student’s performance. The quality of assessment
practices in the classroom determines the quality of learning. Assessment has many
purposes that focuses on the different dimensions of educational development but the
most dominant purpose of assessing students is to improve student’s learning and
develop accountability measures for learning at classroom and school levels.

In order to assess students effectively, it is important to use appropriate

assessment strategies. It is important that a teacher should have clear understanding
and skills of using various assessment strategies because commonly, teachers rely on
limited strategies which alone cannot promote meaningful learning when there are a
number of strategies that can be employed to enhance student’s learning outcome.

It is fundamental for teachers to understand the relationship between teaching

and learning, Moreover, students also need to engage in their own learning in a
challenging but enabling environment. The assessment practices and strategies must
encourage developing linkage of theory and real life. Assessment is meant to contribute
in students learning and thus need to be integrated in daily teaching and learning
process in the classroom.
