1. The bell crank, which is in equilibrium under the forces shown in Figure below, is supported
by a 20 mm diameter pin at D that is in double shear. Determine:
(i) The required diameter of the connecting rod AB given that its tensile working stress
is 100 MPa,
(ii) The shear stress in the pin
3. Two solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are welded together at B and loaded as shown in Figure
below. Knowing that 𝑑1 =30 mm and 𝑑2 =50 mm, find the average normal stress at the midsection
of (i) rod AB; (ii) rod BC
4. Compute the maximum force P that can be applied to the foot pedal. The 6 mm diameter pin at
B is in single shear, and its working shear stress is 28 MPa. The cable attached at C has a
diameter of 3 mm and a working normal stress of 140 MPa.
5. The rigid beam is supported by a pin at A and wires BD and CE. If the load P on the beam
causes the end C to be displaced 10 mm downward, determine the normal strain developed in
wires CE and BD
6. An axial member consisting of two polymer bars is supported at C as shown in Figure below.
Bar (1) has a cross-sectional area of 540 mm2, and an elastic modulus of 28 GPa. Bar (2) has a
cross-sectional area of 880 mm2 and an elastic modulus of 16.5 GPa. Determine the deflection of
point A relative to support C.
7. A solid brass [E=100 GPa] axial member is loaded and supported as shown in Figure below.
Segments (1) and (2) each have a diameter of 25 mm and segment (3) has a diameter of 14 mm.
Determine:
(i) The deformation of segment (2)
(ii) The deflection of joint D with respect to the fixed support at A
(iii) The maximum normal stress in the entire axial member.
8. The rigid bar ABC as shown in Figure below is supported by two bars. There is no strain in
the vertical bars before load P is applied. After load 𝑃 is applied, the normal strain in rod (1) is -
570 𝜇m/m. Determine:
(i) The normal strain in rod (2)
(ii) The normal strain in rod (2) if there is a 1 mmm gap in the connection at pin C before
the load is applied
(iii) The normal strain in rod (2) if there is 1 mm gap in the connection at pint B before
the load is applied.
9. A stainless steel alloy bar 25 mm wide by 16 mm thick is subjected to an axial load of P=145
kN. Using the stress-strain diagram given in the Figure below, determine:
(i) The factor of safety with respect to the yield strength determined by the 0.2% offset
method
(ii) The factor of safety with respect to the ultimate strength.
10. Three bolts are used in the connection as shown in Figure below. The thickness of plate (1) is
t=18 mm. The ultimate shear strength of plate (1) is 320 MPa and the ultimate bearing strength
of plate (1) is 350 MPa. Determine the minimum bolt diameter required to support an applied
load of P=180 kN if a minimum factor of safety of 2.5 is required with respect to both bolt shear
and plate bearing failure.
11. Rigid beam ABC is supported as shown in Figure below. The pin connections at B, C and D
are each double shear connections, and the ultimate shear strength of the pin materials is 620
MPa. The rod (1) has a yield strength of 340 MPa. A uniformaly distributed load os w=15 kN/m
is applied to the beam. A factor of safey of 3.0 is requiredfor all components. Assume a=700
mm, b=900 mm, c=300 mm, and d=650 mm. Determine:
(i) The minimum diameter required for the tie rod (1)
(ii) The minimum diameter required for the double shear pins at B and D
(iii) The minimum diameter required for the double shear pin at C
12. Two hydraulic cylinders are used to control the position of the robotic arm ABC. Knowing
that the control rods attached at A and D each have a 20 mm diameter and happen to be parallel
in the position shown in Figure below, determine the average normal stress in (i) member AE,
(ii) member DG
13. The hydraulic cylinder CF, which partially controls the position of rod DE, has been locked
in the position shown. Member BD is 15 mm thick and is connected at C to the vertical rod by a
9 mm diameter bolt. Knowing that P=2 kN and 𝜃=750, determine (i) the average shearing stress
in the bolt, (ii) the bearing stress at C in member BD
14. In the structure shown in Figure below, an 8 mm diameter pin is used at A and 12 mm
diameter pins are used at B and D. Knowing that the ultimate shearing stress is 100 MPa at all
connections and that the ultimate normal stress is 250 MPa in each of the two links joining B and
D, determine the allowable load P if an overall factor of safety of 3.0 is desired.
15. The horizontal link BC is 6 mm thick, has a width w=30 mm, and is made of a steel with a 450
MPa ultimate tensile strength. What is the factor of safety if the structure shown is designed to
support a load P=40 kN?
