COURSE DESCRIPTION
One-year foreign language credit.

Students in this course have no prior knowledge of French. They are

introduced to the basics of French language and culture through active
communication. Listening comprehension and oral expression skills are
developed through the consistent use of the target language in the
classroom as well as the use of documents created for native speakers
(real life recordings, songs, films etc.). Reading comprehension skills are
developed through the use of varied French texts created for native
speakers (advertisements, blogs, official forms etc.). Writing assignments
are modeled on the reading comprehension documents. The course is task
based (for example, creating a model of an ideal neighborhood) and
involves numerous group activities

GOALS

By the end of the course, students have acquired enough language skills to
achieve basic communication in simple everyday situation, provided the
other person is talking slowly and clearly (greeting people, introducing
themselves, communicating in the classroom, talking about friends, family,
daily activities, environment). They are able to write a paragraph or a
dialogue of about 80 words in grammatically correct sentences. Finally,
they are able to read and understand basic texts (letter, personal add,
restaurant menu etc.) as well as the main points of an oral conversation.

ATTENDANCE/TARDINESS POLICY

You are expected to be present and on time for each class. See the section
3 of the Upper School Student Handbook for attendance policy. If you know
you are going to be absent, please notify me by email. If you are on Zoom
and are experiencing technical difficulties, text one of your friends who is
attending class and can let me know about your problems. It is a good idea
to have the contact information of at least two of your friends in the class.

REMOTE CLASS EXPECTATIONS

iBoZ5_HIWkU0eIW_5H0/edit
While I expect you to be on video, there might be times when you
experience some technical or other types of difficulties. Please,
communicate with me through the chat or email to let me know what is
happening. If you cannot have access to either, contact a classmate who in
turn will inform me of your problems.

DAILY WORK/HOMEWORK
The most important thing is to review and memorize new vocabulary and
grammar concepts every day. There are also some practice exercises to
help students retain new material. Homework should take 20 minutes or
more for a special project/evaluation; it will be posted on the class page by
3:30. HOMEWORK SHOULD BE READY FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE
CLASS.

LATEWORK POLICY
Any assignment not turned in or that the teacher cannot open, or access
will be marked missing in the online gradebook and will receive a zero until
that assignment is turned in to the teacher. The comment in the gradebook
will indicate the date by which you are expected to turn in the assignment
for credit. Work turned in by that deadline will not receive a grade penalty,
but late work will negatively impact your work habits grade.

CLASS RULES
 You must arrive to class on time and with your material and
homework.
 You must follow directions promptly.
 You must take care of your personal needs (going to the bathroom,
getting a drink) before or after class.
 You are supposed to respect your classmate and your teacher. This
includes listening when others are speaking, waiting for your turn to
talk, not interrupting others and paying attention.
 You must try to speak French before you use English.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AMD HONESTY RULES

Academic dishonesty and plagiarism are not acceptable at Crossroads and
carry disciplinary consequences (see section 7-16 in the Upper School
Handbook). The learning value of your work in this course will depend on
your integrity and honesty. In the interest of your own learning, please
follow assignment instructions and do your own work. You should never
use an online translator or look up how to say a full sentence online. The
goal of this course is to learn to communicate successfully in the language
using the vocabulary and grammar you know, which requires practice that
you won’t get if you use an online translator.

EVALUATIONS
Students are evaluated regularly in the following four categories: speaking,
listening, writing, reading. The evaluations include formative and
summative assessments.

ONLINE OPEN GRADEBOOK

We will use the school website’s open grade book. This gradebook, along
with all of your assignments, can be accessed via our class page on the
school website (xrds.org). Assignments will be posted regularly, and when
an assignment is graded, the grade will be entered into the open
gradebook. The open gradebook will calculate your percentage in a
category (the categories include “Writing”, “Speaking”, “Listening”,
“Reading”, and “Work habits”), as well as your immediate overall average.

In addition to calculating your grade, the open gradebook also serves as an
excellent recording tool. You can use it as a checklist, checking off
completed assignments. You can use it as a tracking tool, noting any
missing assignments. Finally, you can often find written comments for
many of your grades (in addition to the written feedback you receive on the
assignment itself). In short, the open gradebook is a powerful tool for your
scholarship, and you can use the data – numerical, written, etc. – to help
you develop, understand, and advocate for your learning style and needs.
The gradebook might not be accessible during certain periods when a
teacher is in the process of grading assignments. If you have questions
about a grade, do not panic, please contact me by email in a respectful
manner and we will resolve the problem together.

Bonne chance, I am looking forward to spending a great year with

you!
