The rules of Ghunnah
Whenever a Meem مhas a Tashdeed ًٰ , make
Ghunnah by making a humming sound with the mouth
closed for about 2 seconds.

فَ ٰل َ َٰما ٰاِ َٰن ُكـل ُ ُٰه َ ٰ

لظ َنٰ
ٰاَ ٰنِٰـ ْٰي ِٰم ٰنَا َٰغمٰ

The rules of Noon Saakin
(ٰ)ن
ْ and Tanween (ٰ ً )
There are four Rules for Noon
Saakin and Tanween:

Idh-haar ٰاِ ْظهَ ْار:
If after a noon Saakin or tanween, one of the letters

﷽
Ikhfaa اِ ْخ َف ْٰاء:
If after a noon saakin or tanween, the following
letters appear, then Ikhfaa will be made.
ك،ق،ف،ظ،ط،ض،ص،ش،س،ز،ذ،د،ج،ث،ت
Ikhfaa means to make a nasal sound for about 2
seconds, with the front part of the tongue hovering
close to the hard palate.

ْٰ َاِ ْدغ:
Idghaam ام
If after Noon Saakin or Tanween, the letters
ُٰمنَا ِٰديا يْـنَا ِد ْيٰ ٰل ِـٰقَ ْٰوم ٰيَعْل َ ُم ْٰو َن َٰو َٰم ْن يَـعْ َم ْل
َج ٰنَةٰ َٰو َحرِيْرا ِٰٰم ْن َوٰلِـي ِر َجال ي ُٰـ ِحبُـ ْو َٰن
ِٰٰم ْن َماٰء ٰاِلٰـٰه َٰوا ِحد ٰيَـ ْو َم ٰئِذٰ َٰوا ِجفَة
َخ ٰي ْـٰر ِٰمنْ ُٰه ٰـح ُف ْوظ ْ ل َ ْٰوح َٰم ٰاَيَامٰا َٰمعْ ُد ْودٰت
َٰر ُس ْٰوْل ٰن َبِـيا ي َ ْو َم ٰئِذ ن َا ِع َمة ٰفَ ٰل َ ْن ٰن َ ِزي ْ َد ُك ْم
ْٰ َو َوالِـد َٰو َما َول َ ْٰد كَثِـيْـٰر َٰاويَهْ ِد
ي َٰط ٰل ْـعٰ ٰن َ ِضيْع

Qalb ب
ٰ ْ ْ قَل:
If after Noon Sakin, a letter بappears, then the
Noon Saakin will change into a Meem Sakin ( ) ًْمand
it will be read with ghunnah. The ghunnah will be
done by making a humming sound with the mouth
closed. The ghunnah will be done for about 2
seconds.
E.g.
َ ِٰن َـ ْفٰسٰ ۢ ب
ـما ـما ٰ ِ نَـ ْف
َ ِٰس ۢ ب
ٰن بَـ ِخ َل
ْٰۢ َٰم ِ ٰاَ ٰن ْ ِٰۢبياٰء
ٰاّلل َ َ ْٰۢ ِٰم
ن ٰب َ ْقلِهَا
ٰاصي َ ِة
ِ َلـ َن َ ْس َٰفع ٰا ۢ ٰبِالـن قَ ْٰو ْٰل ۢ ٰبَ ٰلِيْـغا ا َبَـد ٰا ۢبِـ َما
ْٰ َي َ ْو َم ٰئِذ ۢ بِـ َجهَـن
م ُف ُ ٰرش ۢ ٰبَ َطاٰ ِٰئـ ُنهَا ٰاٰيَات ۢ بَـيِـنَات
ِ َٰ عَـلِ ٰي ْم ۢ بِال ْ ُـمتَـقِيْـ
َْ ن ُم ْـط َم ٰئن ۢ بِا ْ ْٰلِي
ِٰ ـم
ان ٰاٰيٰتٰ ۢ ٰب َـيِـنٰت

The Rules of Meem Saakin

﷽
Idghaam Meem Saakin ًٰاِدْغَا ْم:
If after Meem Saakin ً ْٰم,there appears another
meem م, then ghunnah will be made by making a
humming sound with the mouth closed. The
ghunnah will be done for about 2 seconds.
َٰوا َْر ُجلَـ ُٰك ْم ِمٰ ْن ٰاِن َ ُٰـه ْم َٰمعَ ُك ْم ٰل َ ُٰـه ْم ُٰم ْوس
لـ َ ُٰك ْم َٰما ي َ ٰا ْتِـيَـنَ ُٰك ْم ِٰمـٰ ِنـ ْيٰ اِلَي ْ ُٰك ْم ُٰم ْر َسل ُ ْو َٰن
فَا َ َخ ْٰذنٰ ُٰـه ْم بِـ َما ُٰر ُسل ُ ُٰه ْم ٰبِالْبَـيِـنٰ ِت َٰربَ ُٰه ْم ٰبِ ِه ْم
ٰـمعْ ُر ْو ِف
َ ْ يَا ْ ُم ُر ُٰه ْم ٰبِال اسبَـقَ ُٰك ْم ٰبِهَا
َ َم ٰاٰ َمنْ ُٰـت ْم ٰبِه

ْٰ َاِ ْظه:
Idh-haar Meem Saakin ار
If any other letter besides Baa بor meem مappears
م
after a Meem Saakin , then do not make ghunnah.
ٰل َ ُٰـه ْم ٰثِيَاب ٰاَن ْ ُف ُس ُٰه ْم خٰلِ ُد ْو َن اَن ْ ُٰـت ْم ٰل َـهَا
ُب ُط ْونِـ ِٰه ْم َٰوال ْ ُـجـل ُ ْو ُدٰ َمنْ َسكا ُٰه ْم ٰن َا ِس ُك ْو ُٰه لـ َ ُٰك ْم ٰفِيْهَا

Qalqalah قَل ْ َقل َ ْٰهPart 1
Qalqalah means to make a bouncing sound by either:
ٰق-
ْ Make a bouncing sound, by tapping the uvula with
the extreme back part of the tongue.
ٰط-
ْ Make a bouncing sound, by tapping the tongue
against the hard palate.
ٰفَ َو َسٰ ْطٰ َن َٰٰم ْ ٰطل َ ِع ٰا َ ْ ٰطعَ َمنَا

ٰب-
ْ Make a bouncing sound, by tapping the upper part
of the lip with the bottom part of the lip.
ٰج-
ْ Make a bouncing sound by tapping the tongue
against the hard palate.

The rules of Raa
Part 1- Raa رprounounced with a full mouth:
1. If a Raa رhas a zabar or pesh, then it will be
read with a full mouth.
ُٰم ْٰرتَاب ٰفَٰ ُص ْر ٰٰاَثَ ْٰر َن ٰا َْٰر َس َل
Note: If there’s an empty mouth letter before the Raa
Saakin, then upon joining the two letters, blend the
sound from empty mouth to full mouth.
ٰتَقْ َشعِٰـٰ ُر ٰيَـ ِفٰ ُر َٰٰح َٰر َم ٰبِٰ َر

Note: If there’s an empty mouth letter before the Raa
Mu-shaddad, then upon joining the two letters, blend
the sound from empty mouth to full mouth.
ْٰر
4. If before a Raa Saakin , there is a temporary
ْٰ َٰر ِب
ار َح ْـم ُه َما ْٰ ٰاَ ِم
ارتَا ُب ْوا ۞ار ِج ُعـ ْو ِٰن
ْٰ َٰر ِب
ٰٰفِ ْٰرقَة ٰٰقِ ْٰر َطاس ٰاِ ْٰر َصادا ِٰم ْٰر َصادا

Part 2- Raa رprounounced with an empty mouth:
7. If a Raa رhas a zer , then it will be read with an
empty mouth.

10. If before a Raa Saakin , there is an original zer

If a zabar or pesh appears before the word اهلل, then
the word اهللwill be read with a full mouth.

Part B: How to make waqf
at the end of a word
1. If the last letter of a word has any harakah
besides do zabar ) ً ( , kara zabar ) ( or a zabar
َٰح َٰس َد َٰح َٰس ْد ٰبَـلَـ ِد ٰبَـلَـ ْد
ٰـخ ُ ٰر ُج
ْ َ ـخ ُ ٰر ْجٰ ي
ْ َي ٰا ََٰحد ٰا ََٰح ْد
دَسٰهَا ا َْع َمال َ ُٰـه ْمٰ دَسٰهَا ٰا َْع َمال َ ُٰـه ْم

3. If the last letter has a do zabar and an alif, then
remove one zabar and use the alif to stretch the
last letter. If there is NO alif, then add one.

Part C: Rules of Qalqalah
related to waqf
If any of the letters of ٰ ُق ُط ُب َجدreceives a saakin due
to waqf, then qalqalah will be made.

related to waqf
1. If before a Raa mawqoofah ٰ( ْرa raa that
received a saakin due to Waqf), there’s another
saakin letter. And before that, there’s either a
zabar or pesh. The raa saakin will be read with a
full mouth.

The Rules of Madd
The meaning of Madd is to stretch the sound of a letter.
ًَٰا
1. An Alif ( ) with a zabar before it.

After the letters of Madd ) َا، ُ ْٰو، ( ِ ٰي ْـ, there should be:

After the letters of Madd ) َا، ُ ْو، ( ِيْـ, there appears a
Humza ) (ءin the SAME word. It’s preferable to stretch
it for 4 alifs.
ٰيُٰـ ِضٰـ ْٰٓي ُء ٰلـٰ َتَ ُـنـٰ ْٰٓو ُء َٰ َٰج

Maddul Aaridh Waqfi- َم ُدالْعَا ِر ْض َو ْقـ ِفـ ْٰي

Maddul Leen Aaridh Waqfi-
َم ُداٰللِـيْـ ْن عَا ِر ْض َوقْـ ْفـ ْٰي
After the letters of Leen ) َْو، ( َيْـ, there appears a
temporary Saakin due to waqf (stopping).
ٰ ِ ْ الـصـي
ـف ٰ َ َو ـف
ٰ ْ ْ الـصـي

Maddul Laazim- ًَٰم ُد َاْل ِٰز ْم
There are 5 types of Maddul Laazim:

Terms to remember:

Kilmi Muthaqqal- ِكـلْـ ِمـ ْي ُمـث َ َـقـل
After the letters of Madd ) َا، ُ ْو، ( ِيْـ, there appears a
Tashdeed in the same word. It will be stretched 3 or 5
alifs.
In this example, it has two kilmi muthaqqals, ٰٰ َا and ٰ ُ ْو.

ٰ ْ َحـ ْرفِـ ْي ُمـث َ َـق
Harfi Muthaqqal- ـل
After the letters of Madd ) َا، ُ ْو، ( ِيْـ, there appears a
Tashdeed in the letters of Muqatta’aat. It will be
stretched 3 or 5 alifs.
) طٰ ٰٓس ٓم ( َطا ِسـي ْٓ ْم ِمـي ْٓ ْمIn this example, the Seen ٓسـ
will be Harfi Muthaqqal because of a tashdeed after it.

After the letters of Madd ) َا، ُ ْو، ( ِيْـ, there appears a
permanent saakin in the letters of Muqatta’aat. It will
be stretched 3 or 5 alifs.
ٰ ْ َٰٓٓق ( ٰق
)اف

Leen Laazim- لِـيْـ ْن َْل ِز ْٰم
After the letters of Leen ) َْو، ( َيْـ, there appears a
permanent Saakin in the letters of Muqatta’aat. It will
be preferable to stretch it for 3 alifs.
) اف َها يَا ٰعَـيْٓـ ْن َٓص ْاد ٰٓ ٰكٓـٰهٰـيٰـٰ ٰع ٓـIn this example,
ٰ ْ َٓ ص ( ك
the Ain عٓـwill be Leen laazim. Because inside the letter
Ain عٓـ, there is a َيْـ ( a yaa saakin with a zabar before

The rule of the word اَنَا
Wherever the word اَنَاappears in the Qur’an, the alif ا
after the noon ن, will NOT be used to stretch the
ن
noon . Instead, it will be read as ٰا ََن.
ا
But in the following words, the alif after the noon ن,
will be used to stretch the noon : ن

َ َ اٰب، َجآءَنَا،ا َنَاسـٰ َٰي

There are 4 words in Qur’an, where there is a tiny سon
top of ص.

ٰ َ ٰ( بِـٰ ُمـIn Surah Ghaashiyah, Ayah # 22)

Miscellaneous rules
1. In the following words, the Alif will be used to
stretch the letter ONLY AT THE TIME WAQF:
In the second قَـ َوا ِري ْ َرا, the Alif will not be used at all,
regardless whether one is making waqf or not.

4. In the following words, the Alif after Laam will
NOT be used to stretch the Laam:
ـحـنَ ُه
َ َ( ا َْو َ ْٰل اَ ْذبIn Surah Surah Namal, Ayah #21)

both the humzas with a soft tone.
