The secret key is an ID code that is unique to each WIN. This code is programmed and stored in the WIN, the
PCM, and each ignition key transponder chip. When the PCM or WIN is replaced, it is necessary to program the
Secret Key Code into the new module using a diagnostic scan tool. Follow the programming steps outlined in
the diagnostic scan tool for PCM REPLACED , WIN REPLACED , or TIPM REPLACED under
MISCELLANEOUS FUNCTIONS for the WIRELESS CONTROL MODULE menu item as appropriate.
NOTE: Programming the PCM or WIN is done using a diagnostic scan tool and a PIN to

NOTE: If the PCM and the WIN are replaced at the same time, all vehicle keys will
need to be replaced and programmed to the new WIN.
Each FOBIK has a unique ID code that is assigned at the time the key is manufactured. When a key is
programmed into the WIN, the module learns the transponder ID code and the transponder acquires the unique
Secret Key ID code from the WIN.

COMMUNICATION
DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION
The primary on-board communication network between microprocessor-based electronic control modules in
this vehicle is the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus system. A data bus network minimizes redundant
wiring connections; and, at the same time, reduces wire harness complexity, sensor current loads and controller
hardware by allowing each sensing device to be connected to only one module (also referred to as a node). Each
node reads, then broadcasts its sensor data over the bus for use by all other nodes requiring that data. Each node
ignores the messages on the bus that it cannot use.
The CAN bus is a two-wire multiplex system. Multiplexing is any system that enables the transmission of
multiple messages over a single channel or circuit. The CAN bus is used for communication between most
vehicle nodes. However, in addition to the CAN bus network, certain nodes may also be equipped with a Local
Interface Network (LIN) data bus. The LIN data bus is a single wire low-speed (9.6 Kbps) serial link bus used
to provide direct communication between a LIN master module and certain switch or sensor inputs.
There are actually three separate CAN bus systems used in the vehicle. They are designated: the CAN-Interior
(also known as CAN Interior High Speed/IHS), the CAN-C and the Diagnostic CAN-C. The CAN-Interior and
CAN-C systems provide on-board communication between all nodes in the vehicle. The CAN-C is the faster of
the two systems providing near real-time communication (500 Kbps). The CAN-C is used typically for
communications between more critical nodes, while the slower (125 Kbps) CAN-Interior system is used for

The added speed of the CAN data bus is many times faster than previous data bus systems. This added speed
facilitates the addition of more electronic control modules or nodes and the incorporation of many new
electrical and electronic features in the vehicle.
The Diagnostic CAN-C bus is also capable of 500 Kbps communication, and is sometimes informally referred
to as the CAN-D system to differentiate it from the other high speed CAN-C bus. The Diagnostic CAN-C is
used exclusively for the transmission of diagnostic information between the Totally Integrated Power
Module/Central GateWay (TIPM or TIPMCGW) and a diagnostic scan tool connected to the industry-standard
16-way Data Link Connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel on the driver side of the vehicle.
The TIPM is located in the engine compartment near the battery. The central CAN gateway or hub module
integral to the TIPM is connected to all three CAN buses. This gateway physically and electrically isolates the
CAN buses from each other and coordinates the bi-directional transfer of messages between them.
OPERATION
OPERATION
The Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus allows all electronic modules or nodes connected to the bus to
share information with each other. Regardless of whether a message originates from a module on the lower
speed CAN-Interior (also known as CAN Interior High Speed/IHS) bus or on the higher speed CAN-C or CAN-
D bus, the message structure and layout is similar, which allows the Totally Integrated Power Module/Central
GateWay (TIPM or TIPMCGW) to process and transfer messages between the CAN buses. The TIPM also
stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) for certain bus network faults.
All modules (also referred to as nodes) transmit and receive messages over one of these buses. Data exchange
between nodes is achieved by serial transmission of encoded data messages. Each node can both send and
receive serial data simultaneously. Each digital bit of a CAN bus message is carried over the bus as a voltage
differential between the two bus circuits which, when strung together, form a message. Each node uses
arbitration to sort the message priority if two competing messages are attempting to be broadcast at the same
time.
The ElectroMechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC) (also known as the Cab Compartment Node/CCN) is the
Local Interface Network (LIN) master module in this vehicle and it gathers information from the compass
module, the instrument panel switch bank, the Steering Control Module (SCM), and the Heated Seat Module
(HSM) through the LIN data bus. There is also LIN bus communication between the individual Tire Pressure
Monitor (TPM) transponders and the Wireless Ignition Node (WIN). Both the EMIC and the WIN either act
directly upon the information received through the LIN data bus, relay the information to other nodes in the
vehicle using electronic messages placed on the CAN bus, or both.
The voltage network used to transmit messages requires biasing and termination. Each module on the CAN bus
network provides its own biasing and termination. There are two types of nodes used in the CAN bus network.
On the CAN-C or the IHS bus, a dominant node has a 120 ohm termination resistance while a non-dominant (or
recessive) node has about a 2500 to 3000 ohm (2.5 to 3.0 kilohm) termination resistance. The dominant nodes
on the CAN-C bus are the WIN and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The dominant nodes on the IHS

Country
The termination resistance of two dominant nodes is combined in parallel to provide a total of about 60 ohms.
This resistance value may vary somewhat by application, depending upon the number of non-dominant nodes
on the bus. On the CAN-D bus (or Diagnostic CAN-C) all of the 60 ohm termination resistance is present in the
Central GateWay (TIPMCGW).
NOTE: All measurement of termination resistance is done with the vehicle battery
disconnected.
The communication protocol being used for the CAN data bus is a non-proprietary, open standard adopted from
the Bosch CAN Specification 2.0b. The CAN-C is the faster of the two primary buses in the CAN bus system,
providing near real-time communication (500 Kbps).
The CAN bus nodes are connected in parallel to the two-wire bus using a twisted pair, where the wires are
wrapped around each other to provide shielding from unwanted electromagnetic induction, thus preventing
interference with the relatively low voltage signals being carried through them. The twisted pairs have between
33 and 50 twists per meter (yard). While the CAN bus is operating (active), one of the bus wires will carry a
higher voltage and is referred to as the CAN High or CAN bus (+) wire, while the other bus wire will carry a
lower voltage and is referred to as the CAN Low or CAN bus (-) wire. Refer to the CAN Bus Voltages table
below.
All measurements taken between node ground and CAN terminal with a standard DVOM.
DVOM will display average network voltage.
Total resistance of CAN-C network can also be measured (60 ohms). Total resistance of CAN-Interior
network varies, depending upon the number of optional non-dominant nodes on the bus. CAN-Interior
total resistance should range between about 60 ohms with the minimal number of nodes, to about 42
ohms with the maximum number of nodes.
In order to minimize the potential effects of Ignition-OFF Draw (IOD), the CAN-Interior network employs a
sleep strategy. However, a network sleep strategy should not be confused with the sleep strategy of the
individual nodes on that network, as they may differ. For example: The CAN-C bus network is awake only
when the ignition switch is in the ON or START positions; however, the TIPM, which is on the CAN-C bus,
may still be awake with the ignition switch in the ACCESSORY or UNLOCK positions. The integrated
circuitry of an individual node may be capable of processing certain sensor inputs and outputs without the need
to utilize network resources.
The CAN-Interior bus network remains active until all nodes on that network are ready for sleep. This is
determined by the network using tokens in a manner similar to polling. When the last node that is active on the
network is ready for sleep, and it has already received a token indicating that all other nodes on the bus are
ready for sleep, it broadcasts a bus sleep acknowledgment message that causes the network to sleep. Once the
CAN-Interior bus network is asleep, any node on the bus can awaken it by transmitting a message on the
network. The TIPM will keep either the CAN-Interior or the CAN-C bus awake for a timed interval after it
receives a diagnostic message for that bus over the Diagnostic CAN-C bus.
In the CAN system, available options are configured into the TIPM at the assembly plant, but additional options
can be added in the field using the diagnostic scan tool. The configuration settings are stored in non-volatile
memory. The TIPM also has two 64-bit registers, which track each of the as-built and currently responding
nodes on the CAN-Interior and CAN-C buses. The TIPM stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in one of
two caches for any detected active or stored faults in the order in which they occur. One cache stores powertrain
(P-Code), chassis (C-Code) and body (B-Code) DTCs, while the second cache is dedicated to storing network
(U-Code) DTCs.
If there are intermittent or active faults in the CAN network, a diagnostic scan tool connected to the Diagnostic
CAN-C bus through the 16-way Data Link Connector (DLC) may only be able to communicate with the TIPM.
To aid in CAN network diagnosis, the TIPM will provide CAN-Interior and CAN-C network status information
to the scan tool using certain diagnostic signals. In addition, the transceiver in each node on the CAN-C bus will
identify a bus off hardware failure , while the transceiver in each node on the CAN-Interior bus will identify a
general bus hardware failure . The transceivers for some CAN-Interior nodes will also identify certain
failures for both CAN-Interior bus signal wires.

The Antilock Brake Module (ABM) is a microprocessor-based device which monitors the antilock brake system
(ABS) during normal braking and controls it when the vehicle is in an ABS stop or when in a traction control
situation. The ABM utilizes a 47-way electrical connector on the vehicle wiring harness. The power source for
the ABM is through the ignition switch in the RUN or ON position.
The ABM (1) is mounted to the HCU (2) as part of the Integrated Control Unit (ICU). The ICU is located in the
engine compartment below the master cylinder on the front suspension cradle/crossmember. For information on
the ICU. Refer to Brakes/Hydraulic/Mechanical/INTEGRATED CONTROL UNIT (ICU) - Description .

The ABM constantly monitors the antilock brake system for proper operation. If the ABM detects a fault, it will
turn on the amber ABS warning indicator lamp and disable the antilock braking system. The normal base
braking system will remain operational.
NOTE: If the vehicle is equipped with traction control, the ESP function lamp will
illuminate anytime the amber ABS warning indicator lamp illuminates.
The ABM continuously monitors the speed of each wheel through the signals generated by the wheel speed
sensors to determine if any wheel is beginning to lock. When a wheel locking tendency is detected, the ABM
commands the ABM command coils to actuate. The coils then open and close the valves in the HCU that
modulate brake fluid pressure in some or all of the hydraulic circuits. The ABM continues to control pressure in
individual hydraulic circuits until a locking tendency is no longer present.
The ABM contains a self-diagnostic program that monitors the antilock brake system for system faults. When a
fault is detected, the amber ABS warning indicator lamp is turned on and the fault diagnostic trouble code
(DTC) is then stored in a diagnostic program memory. A latched fault will disable certain system functionality
for the current ignition cycle. An unlatched fault will disable certain system functionality until the fault
condition disappears. These DTC's will remain in the ABM memory even after the ignition has been turned off.
The DTC's can be read and cleared from the ABM memory by a technician using a scan tool. If not cleared with
a scan tool, the fault occurrence and DTC will be automatically cleared from the ABM memory after the
identical fault has not been seen during the next 3,500 miles. Drive-off may be required for the amber ABS
warning indicator lamp to go out on the next ignition cycle.

Each door control module contains a Central Processor Unit (CPU) and communicates with the other door
control modules as well as other electronic modules in the vehicle over the Controller Area Network (CAN)
Interior High Speed (IHS) data bus system. Concealed within the molded plastic door control module housing is
the printed circuit board and the other electronic circuitry of the module. The front door control modules are
connected to the vehicle electrical system through up to eight connector receptacles that are integral to the
module housing, while the rear door control modules are connected through two connector receptacles integral
to the module housing.
Each door control module is concealed behind the front or rear door trim panel where it is secured through two
integral mounting tabs to the door hardware module carrier by two screws. The front door control modules are
located in the upper front corner of the front door hardware carriers, just below the mirror flag area of the front
door. The rear door control modules are located near the lower edge of the rear door hardware module carriers,
just forward of center.
A door control module cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if damaged or ineffective, it must be replaced. The
door control module software is flash programmable.
OPERATION
OPERATION
The microprocessor-based electronic front door control modules contain logic circuits that monitor various hard
wired low current, multiplexed and Local Interface Network (LIN) data bus message external inputs from the
power window, power lock, power mirror, power sliding door and memory switches on their respective doors.
The front door control modules also monitor hard wired power window motor Hall effect sensors and memory
mirror position sensor inputs. The logic circuits of the microprocessor-based electronic rear door control
modules monitor hard wired low current and multiplexed inputs from the power window and sliding rear door
ajar switches as well as from the sliding rear door cinch latches on their respective doors.
In addition, each door control module receives electronic message inputs from and shares its resources through
electronic message outputs to other electronic control modules in the vehicle over the Controller Area Network
(CAN) Interior High Speed (IHS) data bus network. The program logic within the door control module allows
the microprocessor to prioritize all of these inputs and determine the tasks it needs to perform. These tasks are
then completed either by controlling hard wired outputs to the various motor, actuators, lamps or displays
contained on its own door or by sending electronic message requests over the CAN-IHS bus to the appropriate
electronic module in the vehicle.
The door control modules are powered by a fused B (+) circuit and are grounded at all times so that they can
operate regardless of the ignition switch position. The door control modules use On-Board Diagnostics (OBD)
and communicate with a diagnostic scan tool using the CAN data bus.
The hard wired inputs and outputs of the door control module may be diagnosed using conventional diagnostic
tools and procedures. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. However, conventional diagnostic methods
will not prove conclusive in the diagnosis of the door control module electronic controls or the communication
between modules and other devices that provide some features of the power window, power lock, power mirror,
power sliding door and memory systems. The most reliable, efficient and accurate means to diagnose the door
control modules or the electronic controls and communication related to system operation requires the use of a

Each power sliding door is equipped with a Power Sliding Door Control Module (1) (PSDM). The PSDM is
mounted directly to the inboard side of the power sliding door drive assembly (2) with two retaining screws.
The drive assembly is mounted to the body near the bottom of the sliding door in the track cavity with the use of
five retaining nuts. The wire harness and chain link track and the power sliding door drive assembly are visible
with the door open in the lower door sill area.
Software technology has enabled the PSDM to detect resistance to door travel. This allows the power sliding
door to stop and reverse direction any time an obstruction is felt or any of the command switches are operated.
Battery voltage is supplied to the power sliding door system through a 40 amp fuse, located in the Totally
Integrated Power Module (TIPM) assembly. The power sliding door lockout switch located in the front
overhead console prevents opening or actuation of the power sliding door system when activated. In the
unlikely event that the power sliding door system develops a fault, the power sliding door can still be operated
manually from the interior or exterior door handle similar to a standard manual sliding door.
The PSDM communicates on the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus circuit. Therefore, the PSDM can
generate and store its own Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's). The hard wired circuits for the power sliding
door system may be diagnosed using conventional diagnostic tools and procedures. Refer to POWER

conventional diagnostic methods will not prove conclusive in the diagnosis of the electronic controls and
communication between other modules and devices that provide some features of the power sliding door
system. The most reliable, efficient, and accurate means to diagnose the switches, modules, data bus or the
electronic controls and communication related to the power sliding door system operation requires the use of a
diagnostic scan tool. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information.
The PSDM is available as a service part and can be serviced separately from the drive assembly should it

adjustment is performed or diagnostic trouble codes are addressed and erased, a learn cycle must be performed.
The power sliding door learn cycle enables the power sliding door control module to learn or relearn critical
information (travel limits, resistance to door travel, door position, etc.) which allows the system to perform
properly and safely. To perform a power sliding door learn cycle. Refer to Electrical - Power Systems/Power
Sliding Door - Standard Procedure .
NOTE: It may be possible to generate Sliding Door Diagnostic Trouble Codes during
normal power sliding door operation. Refer to the appropriate power sliding
door diagnostic information for a complete list of diagnostic routines.
OPERATION
OPERATION
Battery voltage is supplied to the power sliding door system through a 40 amp fuse, located in the Totally
Integrated Power Module (TIPM) assembly. With the push of a power sliding door open/close command switch
(key fob, overhead console or B-pillar mounted) a signal is received by the Power Sliding Door Control Module
(PSDM). The PSDM receives this signal via the Controller Area Network (CAN) Data Bus circuit. The PSDM
then signals the power sliding door cinching latch to release the door to the unlatched and movable position.
The power sliding door drive assembly motor then starts an open cycle.
The overhead power sliding door switch is mounted in the front overhead console of the vehicle. The switch has
resistors in parallel of 1.76K ohms, 3.17K ohms and 15K ohms. When pressed, the switch will have a nominal
resistance of 1.76K ohms for the right sliding door button, 3.76K ohms for the left sliding door button and when
not pressed, the switch will have a nominal resistance of 15K ohms.
The status of the overhead power sliding door switches is continually monitored by the circuitry within the
ElectroMechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC) (also known as the Cab Compartment Node/CCN). The
instrument cluster receives input messages from the overhead power sliding door switches over a hardwired
connection. Whenever the instrument cluster receives an input from the overhead power sliding door switches it
sends a function command signal to the selected PSDM. This message from the cluster to the PSDM is
delivered via the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus.
The B-pillar switch is located on the lower B-pillar trim panel and allows the rear occupants to power open or
close the sliding doors. The B-pillar switch is an R-Mux switch that has a resistance of 3.6K ohms and 16K
ohms depending on switch position. When pressed the B-pillar switch will have a nominal resistance of 3.9K.
The B-pillar switches are hardwired to the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). The PSDM receives the
message for operation status via the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus. If all the necessary conditions
are met the PSDM will then perform the requested operation. The B-pillar switch lockout feature must be
disabled and the sliding door must be unlocked in order for the B-pillar switch to function.
The FOBIK switch sends a signal to the Wireless Ignition Node (WIN). The PSDM receives the message from
the WIN for operation status via the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus. If all the necessary conditions
are met the PSDM will then perform the requested operation. The vehicles theft alarm must be disabled and the
sliding door must be unlocked in order for the FOBIK switch to function.

When one of the PSDMs receives a command signal it checks the following:
PRNDL Status
Vehicle Speed Status
Ignition Status
Vehicle Theft Alarm Armed/Disarmed Status
Sliding Door Latch Status
Sliding Door Full Open Status
Ambient Temperature
Door Lock Status
Sliding Door B-Pillar Switch Lockout Status
Sliding Door Window Up/Down Status
If the appropriate conditions exist the PSDM will send a command signal to the selected Rear Door Control
Module (RDCM) so the sliding door can be latched/unlatched as needed. This command signal is sent via the
CAN data bus. Once the PSDM senses the latch function it will power the motor on the power sliding door
drive assembly to open/close the sliding door as requested by the overhead power sliding door switches.
During the door cycle, if the PSDM detects sufficient resistance to door travel, such as an obstruction in the
door's path, it will immediately stop door movement and reverse door travel to the full open or closed position.
The ability for the PSDM to detect resistance to door travel is accomplished by hall effect sensors detecting the
door motor speed.
The PSDM has the ability to learn. Anytime a door is opened or closed using the power sliding door system the
module learns from its cycle. If a replacement power sliding door component is installed or a door adjustment is
made, the module must re-learn the effort required to open or close the door. A learn cycle can be performed
with a complete cycle of the door, using any one of the command switches or with the use of a scan tool. Refer
to Electrical - Power Systems/Power Sliding Door - Standard Procedure for detailed instructions.
The power sliding door system is designed with a number of system inhibitors. These inhibitors are necessary
for safety and/or feasibility of the power sliding door system. The power sliding door system inhibitors are:
The power sliding door must be in the full open or closed position in order for the power sliding door
system to start a normal cycle. If the door is not in this position (based on the input from the switches
integral to the cinching latch assembly) the PSDM will only perform a power open cycle.
The transmission must be in park or neutral in order for the power sliding door system to start a cycle.
The front overhead console lockout switch must be in the "UNLOCKED" position in order for the power
sliding door systems B-pillar switches to function.
If multiple obstacles are detected during the same power open or close cycle the power sliding door may
go into full manual mode.
If severe Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are stored in the PSDM the power sliding door may go into
full manual mode.
Due to the high pressure created in the passenger compartment with the blower motor on high, the power

sliding door may not complete a power close cycle unless a window is cracked, allowing the pressure to
escape. This situation will only be experienced on some vehicles, or vehicles with brand new side door
weather seals installed.
The hard wired circuits for the power sliding door switches may be diagnosed using conventional diagnostic
tools and procedures. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. However, conventional diagnostic methods
will not prove conclusive in the diagnosis of the electronic controls and communication between other modules
and devices that provide some features of the power sliding door system. The most reliable, efficient, and
accurate means to diagnose the power sliding door switches or the electronic controls and communication
related to the power sliding door system operation requires the use of a diagnostic scan tool. Refer to the
appropriate diagnostic information.
WARNING: Always disconnect the negative battery cable before attempting any
power sliding door system service.
WARNING: Extreme care must be taken to prevent objects from entering the doors
path once the door reaches the cinch motor contact (approximately 1 inch
before fully closed). Never place objects in the power sliding door when
cinching closed. The obstacle detection function is inoperative during the
cinch phase and damage to the vehicle, power sliding door system or
components and/or personal injury may occur.
WARNING: Never attempt to enter or exit the vehicle while the power sliding door is
in motion. You could damage the power sliding door system or
components and/or cause personal injury.
WARNING: Never attempt to drive away with the power sliding door in motion. You
could damage the power sliding door system or components and/or
cause personal injury.

NOTE: The scan tool standardization process must be performed on the Memory Seat
Module (MSM) any time a new module is installed or the existing module is
reflashed.
The Memory Seat Module (MSM) (4) is located underneath the middle of the driver seat (2). It is used in
conjunction with the other modules in the memory system to recall the driver seat to one of two preset seat
positions (horizontal, vertical, and recliner). The switch for the memory seat programming and selection mounts
on the driver door trim panel. The memory system is able to store and recall all driver side power seat positions,
outside mirror positions and power adjustable pedal position. The system can be set for two different drivers.
On vehicles with a factory installed radio connected to the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus network,
the memory system is also able to store and recall up to twelve radio station presets (six AM and six FM), also
for two drivers. The memory system will also store and recall the last station listened to for each driver, even if
it is not one of the twelve preset stations.
The memory system will automatically recall all of these settings when a button of the memory switch is
depressed, or when the doors are unlocked using the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter (if the "RKE
Linked to Memory" feature is enabled). If the vehicle has more than two drivers the RKE transmitter recall of
memory features can be disabled. This is a customer programmable feature of the Electronic Vehicle
Information Center (EVIC). Refer to Electrical - Message Systems/Message Center/CENTER, Electronic
Vehicle Information - Description .

When the driver memory seat switch control knob is actuated, a resistance signal is sent to the MSM via the
Controller Area Network (CAN) bus circuit. The MSM is responsible for the 12 V battery feed and ground path
to the power seat adjuster motor. The adjuster motor operates to move the power seat adjuster mechanism
through its drive unit in the selected direction until the switch is released, or until the travel limit of the adjuster
is reached.
The MSM receives memory set/position switch input through the CAN bus circuit. The MSM also receives hard
wired input from the hall effect sensors, mounted on each of the driver power seat adjuster motors and the
driver side view mirror motor. The programmed software in the module allows it to know where the seat/mirror
is located in its designed travel by a pulse count generated from the hall effect sensors. This way, when the
memory switch is depressed the module will power the seat adjuster/mirror motors until the correct preset
location is achieved. The module will prevent the seat memory recall function from being initiated, if the
transmission gear selector lever is not in the Park position, or if the vehicle is moving. These inputs are
monitored over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus circuit by the MSM.
A memory setting is saved by pressing the "set" button, then pressing either the memory "1" or "2" button
within 5 seconds of pressing the "set" button.
A memory setting is recalled by pressing either the memory "1" or "2" button, or by pressing the unlock button
on a "linked" Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter (also known as the key fob).
For driver safety, memorized settings can not be recalled if the transmission is in a position other than Park or
the seat belt is latched.
The Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) serves as the user interface for the memory system. It
displays memory system status messages and provides the user with the means for enabling and disabling the
many customer programmable features available on the vehicle, including those for the memory system.
Positions the driver power seat (vertical, horizontal, and recliner positions).
Positions the power adjustable pedals.
Sends the memory save or recall (#1 or #2) command over the CAN data bus circuit to the other memory
system components, radio station pre-sets and power mirror positions.
Provides for "linking" the key FOBs to memory.
Provides for the easy entry/exit feature.
Provides the tilt mirrors in reverse feature.
When a memory button is pressed (#1 or #2) on the memory switch, the left Front Door Module (FDM) sends a
recall message to the MSM. The MSM will then position the memory system components to the
preprogrammed location/setting. When the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter button is pressed,
depending on which transmitter (#1 or #2), the SKREEM (RKE Receiver) sends the recall request and FOB
number (#1 or #2) data message. This RKE transmitter function depends on if the MSM is programmed to

A memory setting is saved by pressing the "set " button, then pressing either the memory "1" or "2" button
within 5 seconds of pressing the "set" button.
A memory setting is recalled by pressing either the memory "1" or "2" button, or by pressing the unlock button
on a "linked" Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter.
For driver safety, memorized settings can not be recalled if the transmission is in any position other than park or
the seat belt is latched.
A key FOB is "linked" to a memory setting by pressing the "set" button and then pressing either the memory "1"
or "2" button within 5 seconds of pressing the set button, and then, with the key removed from the cylinder,
pressing the "lock" button on the selected key FOB.
The memory system "Easy Entry and Exit" feature provides the driver with more room to enter or exit the
vehicle. This is a customer programmable feature of the overhead console. Refer to Electrical - Message
Systems/Message Center/CENTER, Electronic Vehicle Information - Description . When the seat is in a
memorized position, it will move rearward 55 millimeters or to the end of its travel, whichever occurs first,
when the key is removed from the ignition switch lock cylinder. A lock out zone of 60 millimeters has been
established to protect rear passengers from injury. If the memorized seat position is within the lock out zone the
Easy Exit/Entry seat glide feature is disabled. The seat will return to the memory position when the driver turns
the vehicle's ignition switch out of the LOCK position.
The memory system "Tilt in Reverse" feature tilts the outside mirrors down a fixed, incremental angle when the
vehicle is shifted into REVERSE with the ignition switch in the RUN position. This feature provides the
customer with a better view of the ground and vehicle in the area of the rear tires when backing up. The mirrors
move back to their previous position when the vehicle is shifted out of REVERSE.
The memory system "learns" the seat and adjustable pedal motor maximum end positions when the motor
reaches the limit of travel in any direction and stalls. Subsequently, movement will stop just short of that
position to avoid extra stress on the motors and mechanisms. If the system learned a maximum position as a
result of an obstruction, as for instance if a large object was placed on the floor behind the seat, the system can
relearn the "true" maximum position through manually operating the power seat after the obstruction is
removed.
NOTE: It is normal for the power accessories contained in the memory system to stop
at the maximum "learned" position and then continue to the "true" maximum
position when the control switch is released and then applied in the same
direction a second time.
Certain functions and features of the memory system rely upon resources shared with other electronic modules
in the vehicle over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The CAN bus allows the sharing of sensor
information. This helps to reduce wire harness complexity, internal controller hardware, and component sensor
current loads. At the same time, this system provides increased reliability, enhanced diagnostics, and allows the
addition of many new feature capabilities. For diagnosis of these electronic modules or of the CAN bus, the use
of a scan tool and the proper diagnostic information are needed.

In order to obtain conclusive testing of the power seats with and without the memory system option, the
Controller Area Network (CAN) bus, and all of the electronic modules that provide inputs to, or receive outputs
from the memory system components must be checked. Use a scan tool and the proper diagnostic information to
accurately diagnose the power seat/memory seat systems.
If the driver power seat exhibits an interrupted or jerky motion, ensure the wire harness is connected correctly.
To verify the concern, obtain a scan tool and energize each axis one at a time. If any axis stops in approximately
2 seconds (without hitting the end of travel), the feedback for that axis may have an open, short or be incorrectly
connected. Check the wiring to that axis (module to motor). Repair any wiring problems and retry that axis.
Refer to the appropriate wiring information for complete circuit schematic or connector pin-out information.
NOTE: Vehicles equipped with the memory/heated seat option utilize a low voltage cut-
off feature. This feature turns off the 12 V power to the power seat system
anytime vehicle voltage is below 11.0 V. Be certain to check the vehicle
electrical system for proper voltage anytime the power seat system appears
inoperative.
Before any testing of the power seat system is attempted, the battery should be fully-charged.

Vehicles equipped with a power liftgate system utilize a power liftgate control module (2). This module is
located on the left side of the vehicle behind the quarter trim panel and below the quarter glass. The power
liftgate control module receives and monitors logic inputs from all the power liftgate system switches. This
module also contains the software technology to detect liftgate obstructions and stop or reverse the door
accordingly.
OPERATION
OPERATION
The power liftgate control module contains the electronic circuitry and software used to control the sequence of
events for the power liftgate system. This module communicates on the Controller Area Network (CAN) to
monitor many different inputs and outputs such as door lock status, transmission gear selector position and
vehicle speed.
The power liftgate open/close command can be initiated by either one press of the power liftgate overhead
console switch, one press of the power liftgate D-Pillar switch or two presses of the key fob power liftgate
button. The overhead console and D-Pillar switches are hardwired to the power liftgate control module, where
as the key fob signal is sent out on the Controller Area Network (CAN) Data Bus circuit. This signal is detected
by the power liftgate control module. The power liftgate control module then interprets the information to
confirm safety requirements are met before applying power to the power liftgate motor to start a power cycle.

liftgate travel, such as an obstruction in the liftgate's path, the control module will immediately stop liftgate
movement and reverse the direction of travel to the full open or closed position.
The power liftgate control module has the ability to relearn. After 8 miles have been recorded on the odometer,
anytime the liftgate is fully opened and fully closed using the automatic system, the module will learn from its
cycle. If a replacement power liftgate component is installed or a liftgate adjustment is made, the module will
relearn the effort and time required to open or close the liftgate. This learn cycle can be performed with a
Diagnostic Scan Tool or with a complete cycle of the liftgate, using any of the command switches. Refer to
Electrical - Power Systems/Power Sliding Door - Standard Procedure for detailed instructions.
Any diagnosis of the Power Liftgate System should begin with the use of a diagnostic scan tool. For
information on the use of the scan tool, refer to the appropriate diagnostic procedures information.
Inspect the related wiring harness connectors for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded terminals. Refer to the
appropriate wiring information for complete circuit schematic or connector pin-out information.

DESCRIPTION
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is located behind the left front wheelhouse splash shield. The PCM is a
digital computer containing a microprocessor. The PCM receives input signals from various switches and
sensors that are referred to as PCM Inputs. Based on these inputs, the PCM adjusts various engine and vehicle
operations through devices that are referred to as PCM Outputs.
The PCM uses the CAN-C bus to perform engine diagnostics and flash operations.
OPERATION
OPERATION
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) receives input signals from various switches and sensors. When the
ignition key is inserted and rotated to the ACC or Run/Start position, its physical position is determined by the
TIPM via a CAN message from the Wireless Ignition Node (WIN). The TIPM then powers up the ACC and
Run/Start circuits with battery voltage. Power to these circuits wakes up the PCM accordingly. When the key is
rotated to the START (crank) position the TIPM transmits the key position via the CAN C bus to the PCM.
Based on inputs it receives, the PCM adjusts and controls fuel injector pulse width, idle speed, ignition spark
advance, ignition coil dwell, EVAP canister purge, cooling fan, and air conditioning.

This vehicle is equipped with a Steering Control Module (SCM) that is internal to the multi-function switch
housing. The multi-function switch is located on the left side of the steering column, just below the steering
wheel. This switch is the primary control for the front and rear wiper and washer systems, and also is the driver
control for the turn signals and the headlamp beam selection. The only visible components of the switch are the
control stalk (1), control knob and control sleeve that extend through the steering column shrouds on the left
side of the column. The remainder of the switch, including its mounting provisions and electrical connections, is
concealed beneath the shrouds.
The switch housing and controls are constructed of molded black plastic. A single latch feature and key features
integral to the multi-function switch housing are used to secure the switch to the mounting bracket integral to
the clockspring (3). Each of the switches within the multi-function switch is internally connected to the SCM. A
single connector receptacle integral to the back of the switch housing connects the SCM to the vehicle electrical
system through a dedicated takeout and connector of the instrument panel wire harness. The SCM within the
multi-function switch is a Local Interface Network (LIN) slave and communicates over a dedicated LIN bus
circuit with the ElectroMechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC) (also known as the Cab Compartment
Node/CCN), which is the LIN master.
The SCM cannot be adjusted or repaired, and is not flash update capable. If ineffective or damaged the entire
multi-function switch must be replaced. Refer to Electrical/Lamps/Lighting - Exterior/SWITCH,
Multifunction - Removal .
OPERATION
OPERATION
The microprocessor-based Steering Control Module (SCM) utilizes integrated circuitry to monitor hard wired
analog and multiplexed inputs from the individual switches within the multi-function switch. In response to
those inputs, the internal circuitry of the SCM allows it to transmit electronic message outputs to the
ElectroMechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC) (also known as the Cab Compartment Node/CCN) over the
Local Interface Network (LIN) data bus.

In response to those LIN messages the internal circuitry and programming of the EMIC, which is also the LIN
master module in the vehicle, allow it to control and integrate many electronic functions and features of the
vehicle through both hard wired outputs and the transmission of electronic message outputs to other electronic
modules in the vehicle over the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus. See Electrical/Electronic Control
Modules/COMMUNICATION - Description.
The SCM is connected to both a fused B (+) circuit and a fused ignition switch output (run-start) circuit. It
receives a path to ground at all times. These connections allow it to remain functional regardless of the ignition
switch position. Any input to the SCM that controls a vehicle system function that does not require that the
ignition switch be in the ON position such as flashing the high beam headlamps, prompts the SCM to wake up
and transmit on the LIN data bus.
The hard wired circuits between components related to the SCM may be diagnosed using conventional
diagnostic tools and procedures. Refer to the appropriate wiring information. The wiring information includes
wiring diagrams, proper wire and connector repair procedures, details of wire harness routing and retention,
connector pin-out information and location views for the various wire harness connectors, splices and grounds.
However, conventional diagnostic methods will not prove conclusive in the diagnosis of the SCM or the
electronic controls or communication between modules and other devices that provide some features of the
SCM. The most reliable, efficient, and accurate means to diagnose the SCM or the electronic controls and
communication related to SCM operation requires the use of a diagnostic scan tool. Refer to the appropriate
diagnostic information.
WARNING: To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable
the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering
wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor, or
instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate
the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system
capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service.
This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper
precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.

DESCRIPTION
OPERATION
OPERATION
Following are brief descriptions of the systems that the WIN controls.
IGNITION SWITCH
The Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) incorporates an integral ignition switch that consists of four rotary positions
with three detent positions and one spring-loaded position. The one extreme clockwise position shall be spring-
loaded momentary contact "START" position. When released from the "START" position, the switch shall
automatically return to the detent "ON" position. The other position include a detent "ACCESSORY"
position and a detent"LOCK" position.
The WIN reads the position of the ignition switch and transmits via vehicle bus. These positions include
"LOCK" with ignition key-out, "LOCK" with ignition key-in, "ACCESSORY" , "RUN" and "START" .
Upon failure of proper Sentry Key Immobilizer (SKIS) communication to the Powertrain Control Module,
(PCM), the PCM will shut off fuel after two seconds of run time. The engine will not re-crank on the key cycle
during which the failure occurred. A full key down sequence must be performed for the engine to crank again.
Refer to Electrical - Vehicle Theft Security/Vehicle Theft Security - Operation .
The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE), transmitter uses radio frequency signals to communicate with the WIN

The Tire Pressure Monitoring (TPM) system uses radio and sensor technology to monitor tire air pressure
levels. Refer to Tires and Wheels/Tire Pressure Monitoring - Operation .
Further information concerning the Remote Start System can be located in Electrical - Engine
Systems/Starting - Operation .
The Brake Transmission Shifter/Ignition Interlock (BTSI) is controlled by the WIN and prevents the
transmission gear shifter from being moved out of PARK without a driver in place. Refer to Transmission and
Transfer Case/Automatic - 62TE/SYSTEM, Shift Interlock - Operation .
The key removal inhibit solenoid internal to the WIN prevents the FOB with Integrated Key (FOBIK) from
being rotated in the ignition switch to the LOCK position for all vehicles with an automatic transmission unless
the transmission shift lever is in the PARK position. The WIN module monitors a hard wired input from a
switch integral to the automatic transmission shifter module to control this feature. The key removal inhibit
solenoid is electronically disabled internally by the WIN on vehicles with a manual transmission.
For more information. Refer to Electrical/Power Locks/TRANSMITTER, Integrated Key FOB - Diagnosis
and Testing .
