Exploring Theatre

DESIGN PROJECT

In this project you will create a costume design for a fairy tale and present it
to the class.
1. Read the fairy tale, with costume design in mind, in order to get as
much factual information from it as possible and to find all of the
implied information concerning design. Take notes or highlight this
information on your copy.
2. Research the time period and the setting of the play.
3. Take all that information from your reading and research and use your
imagination to create a design that might be used in a stage production
of the fairy tale.

Your choices should reflect the physical requirements of the character.


Your choices should also reflect the aesthetic requirements of the
character

For the costume design, answer the following questions:


A. When does the fairy tale take place (century, decade, time of year)?
How did people dress at this time?
What clothing styles and fabrics were popular?
B. What is the nature and personality of the characters you have
chosen?
C. What style, color, fit, and fabric of the costumes and what accessories
will best communicate the nature and personality of those characters?
D. Are there any physical requirements needed for the characters’
costumes?
Does s/he need pockets or accessories?
Does s/he have special physical actions to perform?
Does the costume need to be distressed?
The project will consist of three parts

1. Written Work will include:


A. a typed analysis of your costume design and its relation to the
characters and the story, answering all parts of each of the
above questions by letter.

B. a typed costume plot for each of the 3 characters, listing and


describing each and every item they are wearing plus any
accessories. Make sure the name of each character is on
top of each list.

2. Costume Rendering --a colored rendering of the costume for three


characters on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of clean white paper mounted on poster
board or cardboard with the character’s name on each. You must also
include a fabric swatch on each rendering to represent color, texture, or
pattern.

3. Oral Presentation—give a short plot summary of your story, discuss


which characters you have chosen, showing the design for each and
explaining to the class your analysis of each character and the costume
choices you made.

There will be 2 grades for the assignment: one grade for the written work (analysis
questions and costume plot) and one grade for the costume rendering and oral
presentation.
