Title: Separation Technique
Date: December 15,2020
Problem Statement: You enter a classroom and see a mixture of sodium chloride, ammonium
chloride and sand on the teacher's desk. A note on the desk states that you should separate and
retain the components.
Hypothesis: The ammonium chloride will separate by sublimation, the sand by filtration and
sodium chloride by evaporation
Aim: To investigate if the reagents can be separated and retain their components.
Apparatus: Evaporating dish, tripod stand, spatula, filter paper, filter funnel, beaker, bunsen
burner, steel gauze , Tissue , petri dish
Reagents: Sodium chloride, ammonium chloride, sand, water
Diagram of Apparatus:
Method:
1.Set up the apparatus as shown above.
2.pour the mixture into a evaporating dish
3.place the dish on top of the heat source
4.place filter funnel on top with tissue as the stopper
5.scrape out the Ammonium chloride onto a petri dish
7. Measure out 20ml of water in a beaker
8. Pour out sand and salt into the beaker with water
9. filter the mixture
10. Pour the filtrate into a evaporating dish
11. Place onto heat source
12.when most of the water is gone remove from heat source
13. Scrape the sodium chloride onto a dish
14. Lay out sand in filter paper to dry
Expected Results: All mixtures are not combined chemically, hence, the sand, ammonium
chloride and sodium chlorine will separate.
Treatment of Results: Place each type of particle that was separated into visible petri dish
Variables:
Controlled: The sand doesn't change
Manipulative: The Sodium Chloride and Ammonium Chloride changes state
Responding: ` Being able the separate each property with it retaining its components
Precaution:
Made sure that none of the gas could escape the funnel by adding a
tissue stopper.
Heated evaporating dish on top of wired wauzed
Limitation:
The time it took for each separating technique to be completed properly.
Assumption:
