Task 1. Complete the blanks with suitable word provided in the table.
Flood
Flooding is a disaster (1) which commonly happens in large and densely populated cities. In
Indonesia, the floods hit Jakarta very often and cause many victims (2). Then, do you know the
process of how flood happens (3)? Pay attention to the following explanation.
The process of natural flooding is preceded (4) by rain which falls to the surface of the earth. Then
the rain water is absorbed (5) by the ground surface and flows to the lower place. Once that
condition happens, evaporation and the water appear to the surface of the land. Flooding can be
disastrous (6) for humans when floods happen in an area that people live because the water carries
along objects like houses, bridges, cars, furniture and even people (7).
On the other hand, the process of non natural flooding is usually caused by bad habits of humans
who do not care about the environment (8) such as littering that can make water flow clogged. This
makes the water deposited in landfills which gradually becomes more common. When water
reservoirs can no longer hold (9) water discharge, the water then overflows out the land and cause
flooding (10).

Task 2. Read the text below, then answer the questions. (LKS page 42-43)
Hurricanes are the most violent storms on Earth. People call these storms by other names, such
as typhoons or cyclones, depending on where they occur. The scientific term for all these storms is
tropical cyclone. Only tropical cyclones that form over the Atlantic Ocean or eastern Pacific Ocean
are called “hurricanes”
Tropical cyclones are like giant engines that use warm, moist air as fuel. That is why they form
only over warm ocean waters near the equator. The warm, moist air over the ocean rises upward
from near the surface. Because this air moves up and away from the surface, there is less air left
near the surface. Another way to say the same thing is that the warm air rises, causing an area of
lower air pressure below.
The air from surrounding area with higher air pressure pushes in to the low pressure area.
Then, that “new” air becomes warm and moist, and rises, too. As the warm air continues to rise, the
surrounding air swirls in to take its place. As the warmed, moist air rises and cools off, the water in
the air forms clouds. The whole system of clouds and wind spins and grows, fed by the ocean’s
heat and water evaporating from the surface.
Storms that form north of the equator spin counterclockwise. Storms south of the equator spin
clockwise. This difference is because of Earth’s rotation on its axis.
As the storm system rotates faster and faster, an eye forms in the center. It is very calm and
clear in the eye, with very low air pressure. Higher pressure air from above flow down into the eye.
When the winds in the rotating storm reach 39 mph, the storm is called a “tropical storm.” And
when the wind speeds reach 74 mph, the storm is officially a ‘tropical cyclone” or hurricane.
Tropical cyclones usually weaken when they hit land, because they are no longer being “fed”
by the energy from the warm ocean waters. However, they often move far inland, dumping many
inches of rain and causing lots of wind damage before they die out completely.

Task 4. Read the two texts below then answer the questions in the table.
Text A.
Butterfly
Metamorphosis is a process of a caterpillar to become a new animal (perfect stage), in this case
is a butterfly. The process happens quite simple but takes quite long time. First, starting from an egg
laid by a butterfly on a leaf (usually leaf of orange tree or other tree), this leaf is aimed to be the
food for the caterpillars until it reaches adulthood when the time comes to become pupa/cocoon and
in some the day it will become a new butterfly.
The egg that laid by a butterfly will hatch in 3-5 days. Then it becomes larva. The larva will
walk to the edge of the leaf of host plant and start eating it. Most of the larva eat its empty egg shell
as a first food. The outer skin of the larva does not stretch following its growth, but it become very
tight when larva will change its skin. Larva change its skin (molting) for about 4-6 times during its
life.
When the larva reaches the maximum growth, larva will stop eating, walking to seek the
nearest shelter, clinging themselves to a branch or a leaf with woven yarn. The larva has entered the
phase of pre-pupa and for the last time releasing the skin to form a pupa (cocoon). Pupa usually
hard, smooth and in a form of a structure without any limb. Commonly pupa is green, brown or the
color according to the surroundings (camouflage). The forming of a butterfly in the pupa usually
takes 7-20 days depending on the species.
Once it is out of the pupa, the butterfly will crawl to the top so that the wings that still weak,
crumpled and slightly wet can hang down and inflate normally. Immediately after the wings are dry,
inflate and strong, the wings will open and close several times and the butterfly will attempt to fly.

Text B
Landslide
Landslide is a geological process that happen because of the movement of rock mass or soil
such as the fall of rocks or clumps of soil which detached from the main section of the mountain or
hill. Landslide usually happen in the mountainous areas.
Mostly landslides happen because of earthquake that moves the underground plate which
caused the element or the subsurface plate displaced, so it is causing fraction and landslide. High
rainfall during the rainy season will also caused landslide. Long duration of the rain will occur the
water evaporation on the ground surface in large amounts. The evaporation will make pore or soil
cavity, then there would be cracks on the ground. When rain falls, the rain will infiltrate the cracks.
Then, the water will accumulated at the bottom of the slope and caused lateral movement which
occur landslide.
Landslide often caused a lot of disadvantages. Landslide can make people lose their house,
lands, and properties because buried by the landslide. The worst is the loss of life because they can’t
run from the landslide. So, to prevent landslide to happen, start to care about our environtment. We
can start by planting tree and do reforestation. Plus, do not throw trash carelessly to keep our
environment clean. So, we would prevent flood and landslide during the rainy season.
More and more people are deciding to move to suburbs. Is that surprising? Living in the
suburbs has many unique perks which you can’t enjoy living elsewhere. Suburbs are the perfect
balance between experiencing urban and rural lives.
The first is that people prefer less crowds. What makes a city is inevitable is the endless
numbers of people in every corner. Cities are already congested with multiple buildings, cars, and
taxis. No matter where you go in the city, you’ll always find yourself trying to push through a huge
crowd of people. However, suburbs are generally much less populated which means they are not
nearly as crowded or congested. Many people leave the hectic crowds from the city and move to
the suburbs to enjoy some peace when walking on the streets.
Second, if you are someone who is fond of nature, then the suburbs are for you. In the city,
you’d be lucky to spot more than a few trees and bushes. On the other hand, the suburbs are
thriving with nature. Suburbs never run short of beautiful mountains, rivers, lakes, forests and
parks. Here you will find vast stretches of greenery and open land that will give you a breath of
fresh air. In addition, suburbs are also home to more wildlife species than the city which indicates
that you’d be living in a healthy and wholesome ecosystem. The abundance of nature brings with
its fun activities, such as fishing, hiking, zip-lining and boating.
Then, city residents look to move into a suburban area to gain a sense of community. In the
city, it’s incredibly hard to build friendships with the people surrounding you. By living in suburbs,
you will benefit from a quality social life. You can have close-knit relationships with your
neighbors and build your own interpersonal community. Having good friends and neighbors is not
only fun for those. Thank giving dinners, but is also a very important aspect of feeling safe and
more at home.

avoided is the endless number of people around every corner.
Stroll: That’s right, also for another reason because Cities already crowded with lots of buildings,
cars, and taxis. Because being in the city if we go by car or vehicle then we will encourage
the crowd.
Vettel : Yes the suburbs are in high demand so a lot of people from the city are moving to the
suburbs, because the suburbs are generally much less populated which means they are not
too crowded or crowded.
Stroll: This includes crowds leaving the city towards the suburbs to enjoy peace while walking the
streets. Also, if you are someone who loves nature, then the suburbs are for you.
