George Hector
Born in Gagetown, New Brunswick in 1911, George Hector was one of NB’s most
well-known and respected musicians. Although his interest in music came from
his mother who played accordion, he became fascinated with the banjo.
Although he never took lessons, he learned how to play the banjo and began
playing in small local shows. He made his first professional appearance in 1935
with Don Messer. In 1946, he joined the Maritime Farmers and they would
perform live across the region. Later in his career, he toured solo performing
original songs, telling jokes, singing and whistling, becoming known as the
“Whistling Banjoman”. He is credited with developing the country music scene
of the Canadian East Coast. He was one of the first artist inducted into the New
Brunswick Music Hall of Fame in 1983 and has received the ECMA’s Stompin’
Tom Award for his contribution in developing and promoting East Coast Music.
