Strong and Weak Form

The document discusses strong and weak forms in spoken English. Content words like nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are pronounced with stress (strong form) while functional words like pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions are pronounced without stress (weak form). In a sentence, content words typically take strong forms while functional words take weak forms, using the schwa vowel sound. However, functional words can take strong forms for emphasis or if they appear at the end of a sentence. Some examples of words and their strong and weak forms are provided like "the", "does", "him", "for". A practice section tests the reader's understanding of applying strong and weak forms.

STRONG AND WEAK FORMS

Introduction
- In spoken English, to make the natural rhythm of the utterance, words can be classified into 2
types: Strong form Vs weak form

Trong tiếng anh nói, để làm cho lời nói có nhịp điệu tự nhiên, các từ có thể được chia làm
hai loại là dạng mạnh và dạng yếu

- Content words: N, V, Adj, Adv : key words, convey important information: - Strong form –
EMPHASIS

Nó chứa các từ như: danh từ, động từ, tính từ, trạng từ: các từ chìa khoá, truyền tải thông
tin quan trọng: DẠNG MẠNH- NHẤN MẠNH

I’m a teacher (N) . I’m passionate ( adj) about teaching (V) English ( N) .

- Functional words: words that help us construct the sentence in terms of Grammar but they
don't really mean anything: Pronouns, Conjunctions, Prepositions, Articles, Determiners ( this/
that/ those..), Auxiliaries ( I was (auxiliary )studying English) and Modal verbs (may, could,
should , might…, etc) – WEAK FORM – NO STRESS

I( Pronoun – functional - weak) - was ( auxiliary – Functional word - weak) studying ( Verb-
Content – strong) .

- Functional words have no stress, and so they are weakened. That weakened form is called
"weak form" as opposed to a "strong form", which is the full form of the word pronounced with
stress. The strong form - Content words only happens when we pronounce the words alone, or
when we emphasize them. Weak forms are very often pronounced with a schwa, and so are very
weak and sometimes a bit difficult to hear properly.

Some basic rules

- Normally, in a sentence, the content words are fully stressed – Strong form whereas the
functional words are unstressed or pronounced in the weak forms - Content : strong
Functional – Weak.

- Most of the weak forms use the vowel sound schwa /ə/ and  Weak form – vowels-/ə/
- If you want to show emphasis or contrast, we can vary intonation by using strong forms
where we should normally use weak forms, e.g. "where've you been all day?" /bi:n/

I love him, not you.  strong form. You MUST ( modal verb) go. – STRONG FORM

- If a functional word comes at the end of a sentence we usually use its strong form, e.g. "what
are you looking for?" /fɔ:/ - Functional words- End of the sentence – STRONG FORM
