Assignment # 6

Part I.

I. Predict the chemical formula of the binary compounds formed between the elements. If more than
one compound is possible, give at least two compounds. Give the chemical formula and name of each
compound formed.

Hydrogen fluorine oxygen

carbon CH4 (methane) Carbon monoxide (CO)
Carbon Tetrafluoride,
C2 H6 (ethane) (CF4) Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

C2 H10 (butane) Carbon monofluoride Carbonate (CO3-2)

(CFx)
sulfur Hydrosulfuric acid (H2S) Sulfur Tetrafluoride (SF4) Sulfate (SO₄-2)

Sulfur trifluoride (F3S) Sulfite (SO3-2)

phosphorus Phosphine (PH3) Phosphorus trifluoride Phosphorus pentoxide
(PF3) (P₄O₁₀)

Phosphorus
pentafluoride (PF5)

II. Give the name of the following compounds:

1) N2F2 = Dinitrogen difluoride

2) Cl2F7 = Dichlorine heptaflouride

3) XeO3 = Xenon trioxide

4) BeH2 = Beryllium hydride

5) BrF5 = Bromine pentafluoride

III. Write the chemical formula of the following:

1) Carbon tetrachloride = CCl4

2) Dinitrogen tetroxide = N₂O₄

3) Silicon carbide = SiC

4) Iodine heptafluoride = IF7

5) Selenium dioxide = SeO2

IV. Give the chemical name, chemical formula and use of the following common names.

Common name Systematic name Chemical formula Common use

Table salt Sodium chloride NaCl Flavoring in food
Baking soda Sodium hydrogen carbonate NaHCO₃ Whiten the teeth
Fool’s gold Iron pyrite/Iron sulfide FeS2 One of gold
Laughing gas Nitrous oxide/Dinitrogen N₂O Sedation and pain relief
monoxide
Blue vitriol Copper(II) sulfate CuSO4 Insecticides and germicides
Muriatic acid Hydrochloric acid HCl Remove rust and stain from concrete
and brick.
Epsom salt Magnesium sulfate MgSO₄ Alleviate Body Aches
lye Sodium hydroxide NaOH Synthesizing drugs/Making Soaps
Saltpetre Potassium nitrate KNO3 Major constituents of gunpowder
(black powder)
Caustic soda Sodium hydroxide NaOH Manufacture of pulp and paper,
alumina, soap and detergents.
Marble Calcium carbonate CaCO3 Architecture and sculpture

Part 2

I. Writing Word equations

Write word equations for the following reactions.

1. Magnesium and hydrochloric acid react to form magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas
Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid → Magnesium chloride + Hydrogen gas
Mg(s) + 2 HCl(aq) → MgCl 2(aq) + H 2(g)
2. Methane reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water.
Methane + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + Water
CH4(g)+2O2(g)→ CO2(g)+2H2O(g)
3. Zinc bromide is formed when zinc is placed in bromine gas.
Zinc + Bromine gas → Zinc bromide
Zn + Br → ZnBr₂
4. Lithium fluoride is produced from lithium metal and fluorine gas.
Lithium metal + fluorine gas → Lithium fluoride
2Li+F2→2LiF
II. Writing Chemical equations.

Write chemical formula equations for the following reactions. Check that each equation is balanced.

1. Iron reacts with oxygen gas to form iron (II) oxide (FeO).

Fe + O → FeO

BALANCED

2. Sodium metal reacts with chlorine gas to form sodium chloride (NaCl).

Na + Cl2 → NaCl

2Na + Cl2 → 2NaCl

3. Copper reacts with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to form copper sulfate (CuSO4) and hydrogen gas.

Cu+H2SO4 → CuSO4 +H

Cu + H2SO4 → CuSO4 + 2H

4. Cobalt (Co) reacts with hydrochloric acid to form cobalt chloride (CoCl2) and hydrogen gas.

Co + HCl → CoCl2 + H

Co + 2HCl → CoCl2 + 2H

5. Calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 is formed when calcium oxide (CaO) reacts with water.

CaO + H2O→ Ca(OH)2

BALANCED
III. Balancing Chemical equations

Balance each equation. Remember you cannot add subscripts or place coefficients in the
middle of a chemical formula.

1. Na + MgF2 → NaF + Mg

2Na + MgF2 → 2NaF + Mg

2. Mg + HCl → MgCl2 + H2

Mg + 2HCl → MgCl2 + H2

3. Cl2 + Kl → KCl + I2

Cl2 + 2KI → 2KCl + I2

4. NaCl → Na + Cl2

2NaCl → 2Na + Cl2

5. Na + O2 → Na2O

4Na + O2 → 2Na2O

6. K + Cl2 → KCl

2K + Cl2 → 2KCl

7. C2H6 + O2 → CO2 + H2O

2C2H6 + 7O2 → 4CO2 + 6H2O
