1. PURPOSE
This Method Statement describes the methodology and procedure to Excavation, Concrete block
demolition and Reinstatement of surface to perform Maintenance activities in a safe manner.
2. SCOPE
The scope of this Method Statement is applicable for all the activities and associated works
related to Excavation, Concrete block demolition and Reinstatement, Final inspection and
Handover as per the approved Specification/Manufacturer’s recommendation.

4. RESPONSIBILITIES
4.1. Construction Manager shall assure and monitor the operations that the works are executed
as planned and directs the site supervisor as required
4.2. Site Engineer executes these activities, deploying the workforce on the job as necessary.
4.3. Safety Personnel shall be responsible for enforcement of Safety and ensure all required
precautions are implemented prior to commencement of any of the construction activities.
4.4. Site Supervisor – SS Site Supervisor ensures that all activities on site are carried out
in accordance with the schedule and taking care of entire working crew.
4.5. Other responsible personnel are: Skilled Workers and Helpers.

6. PROCEDURES - EXCAVATION
6.1. Site Investigation and Preparation:
 To determine suitable method of excavation to be employed, a site study is to be made on
the nature of materials, soil conditions, strata, ground water levels, presence of utilities,
etc.,
 CAT scan shall be conducted to locate underground services.
 The site will be enclosed by use of suitable barricades. Warning signs will also be
displayed on the site boundary in clear and visible positions.

 Before commencing any excavation or fill, the area shall be cleared of all trees, stumps,
roots, bushes, vegetation, debris, materials or other obstructions.
 Prior to commencing excavation work, the SE shall ascertain clearance/approval from the
responsible Utility Authorities whether any mains or services need to be diverted or cut-
off in accordance with the procedure.
 Ground Condition- visual inspection of the ground condition shall take place; full
consideration of the flooring/grass/tiles should be observed, hence, armor deck (floor
protection boards) shall be laid along the access wherein excavator passes.

6.2. Excavation and Demolition of Existing Foundation Blocks:


 The proposed excavation dimensions are 0.50 x 0.50 x 0.30m (Incl. concrete block)
 Prior to beginning of any excavation activities, verify that suitable permits are in place
with approval from the concerned parties including that of any concurring party if
applicable.
 All excavated material shall be kept a minimum of 1.0 meter away from the edge of
excavation or shall be stockpiled to the area designated by the SE.
 Any excavation near underground utilities shall be done through manual digging. The CF
shall take all precautions to prevent damages to services, properties and persons.
 Trenches and pits shall be kept free of water.
 All concrete blocks will be crushed out to ensure that no obstructions remain in areas of
future development to a depth of below 300 mm existing ground level.
 After breaking up the concrete block, the steel post will cut and flush by an angle grinder
or reciprocating saw that has a metal-cutting blade attached.
6.3. Filling:
 Suitable material for earthworks shall be approved soil as determined by BS 1377 – Part 3
complying QCS 2014, Section-6, Part 3, Table 3.1.
 The backfill will be brought to a suitable level above grade to provide for anticipated
settlement and unless indicated otherwise, is to be sloped away from the structure.

 Filling around pipes such as PVC, UPVC, GRP, HDPE, etc., SE to ensure that it is done
with fine sand void of aggregates so that it prevents rupturing of the pipe on vibration
during the working pressure for a minimum thickness of 150mm.
 Potable water shall be used to mix the soil / fill materials to achieve the desired moisture
content of backfill compacted materials.

6.4. Grading and Levelling:


 The grading of aggregates/ lime stones, dune sand, wash sand, etc., and leveling shall be
carried out in accordance with the relevant approved drawings and to the levels shown
thereon. Levels shall be maintained as required.

6.5. Compaction:
 The material is to be placed in layers within the effective range of compaction of the plant
provided that the maximum loose (un-compacted) thickness of each layer does not exceed
200 mm.
 The material is to be watered and mixed as necessary. Compaction of each layer is to
continue until a density of a least 95% of the maximum dry density has been achieved.
 For utility trenches, each layer shall be well compacted by hand with iron rammers
weighing not less than 5 kg, until the trench has been filled to a height of 300 mm above
the top of the utility.
7. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
 Ensure work permit is valid and present on workplace.
 Barricade the work area.
 All safety sign board must be visibly posted.
 Ensure that only authorized personnel are within the work area.
 The work shall be executed in accordance with the approved Safety Action Plan and Daily
Safety Work Plan.
8. HOUSE KEEPING:
 All debris to be removed from the site.
