SEQUENCE WORDS

Sequence words signal the sequence or order of events.


They help the reader understand the order of events in a
story or procedure. Sequence words are also called time
order words or sequential transition words. Like other
transition words, sequence words prevent choppy writing. In
addition, they signal the sequence of events or steps so the
reader can understand the order in which they occurred or
should occur. Writers use sequence words to help readers
following the events they are narrating.
Here we have some examples about the most common
sequence words used
Example:

Complete the instructions with the correct word sequence.

FINALLY - NEXT – AFTER THAT – FIRST - THEN

1.- FIRST, mix a pinch of salt in 100 ml. of water and


dissolve it. This is called a dilute solution.

2.- NEXT, mix a tablespoon of salt in 100ml. of water and


dissolve it. This is a concentrated solution.

3.- THEN, add more amount of solute, to obtain a balance


between the solute and the solvent. This is a saturated
solution.

4.- AFTER THAT, add salt to the previous solution until this
is not dissolve. This is a supersaturated solution.

5.- FINALLY, don’t forget to take notes about the


additional amount that you incorporate in this step.
