Jose Rizal's huge role in attaining the nation's freedom led to the establishment of
Republic Act 1425. The Republic Act 1425, commonly known as the Rizal Act, was
established 12th of June 1956 by Senator Claro M. Recto. It requires the curricula of
private and public schools, colleges and universities courses to include the life, works
and writings of Jose Rizal, particularly his novels Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo. According to the Official Gazette, the law was made effective on
August 16, 1956. It is significant because, there is a need for a re-dedication to the
ideals of freedom and nationalism for which our national hero lived and died. Also, It
is meet that in honoring Jose Rizal, we remember with special fondness and devotion
his life and works that have shaped the national character. In my opinion, the life,
works and writings of Jose Rizal particularly his novels Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo, are a constant and inspiring source of patriotism with which the
minds of the youth, especially during their formative and decisive years in school,
should be suffused.
Rizal himself, his own people, and the foreigners all together contributed to make
him the greatest hero and martyr of his people. He is a hero because he died for the
Philippines. He wasn't afraid to express himself about the Spaniards who were taking
advantage of the Filipinos. He wrote Noli me Tangere and El Felibusterismo to show
the cruelties inflicted by the Spaniards to the Filipinos. Since the spaniards had the
weapons necessary to conquer a country, the Filipinos had to obey them or get killed
in the process. He became the National hero of the Philippines because he was one
of those people who were ready to stand up and fight for the country.
3. How would you justify the proclamation of Rizal as the National Hero of our
country?
There are a lot of discussions regarding this topic about the proclamation of Rizal as
the National Hero of our country. There are some authors who are not in favor for
Rizal as our National Hero. They said Rizal should not be since he repudiated the
revolution which for some other countries, their national hero was a leader of
revolution. Some thought Rizal should not be as such because he is not from the
group of masses. He is an elite personality during his time. Rizal wrote two
controversial books that opened the eyes of the Filipinos. Bonifacio fought with force
and might, with the Filipinos. how come Rizal gets more glory?
Being a Filipino, I have nothing against the proclamation of Jose Rizal as our National
Hero. He inspired most of the revolutionaries not by fighting with swords but by
writing with the pen to demoralize the enemy and to inspire people of gaining
freedom. What set Rizal apart from the others were his methods. Instead of relying
on the sword, he relied on the might of the pen. Using this method he was able to
produce novels and poems that touched the Filipino’s soul.
Without resorting to violence, he made Filipinos realize the oppression they were
going through under the Spaniards. In his poems he also made it clear how
important it was to love one’s country.
