INTRODUCTION

Work Immersion is one of the course requirements for graduation. A Senior High School student has to
undergo work immersion in a business organization/establishment whose work requirements are related to the
specialization. Through this work immersion, the students are exposed to and become familiarized with work-
related environment related to their field of specialization.“Work immersion is a key feature in the senior high
school curriculum. It can be conducted in different ways depending on the purposes and needs of the
learners,” Education Secretary Leonor Briones said. The guidelines said work immersion – which can range
from 80 to 320 hours – will enable students to become familiar with the workplace, experience workplace
simulation and apply their competencies in areas of specialization.

“Work immersion will help develop among learners life and career skills, and will prepare them to make
decisions on postsecondary education or employment,” the guidelines read.“Through partnership building,
DepEd hopes that partner institutions will provide learners with work immersion opportunities, workplace or
hands-on experience, and additional learning resources,” it added. The agency said schools may partner with
recognized institutions or organizations to come up with agreements on work immersion for students. As the
students are still minors, DepEd said work immersion requires parental consent.

President Aquino, the different government institutions involved in education, and Congress have since
made K to 12 a reality rather than a mere ideal.

As I looked over the paradigm created by the steering committee of the K to 12 reform program,
however, I suddenly realized that we had overlooked a major gap in the system.
The curriculum has been reengineered from pre-school to tertiary general education. It is now
seamless, without disruptions caused previously by trifocalization and bureaucratic structures. We have firmly
agreed on what students should know and be able to do after 12 years of basic education or more (if they go to
college).

What is missing is a clear idea of what the term “Immersion” implies.

In the approved latest draft of the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum, students that choose to take
the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood and the Home Economics tracks are expected to spend 80 hours outside
campus, doing “Immersion.”

Our country has had a lot of experience with on-the-job training (OJT) programs on the collegiate level.
Unfortunately, many (if not most) college OJT students are assigned only to insignificant jobs in a company
(answering the phone, making photocopies, making coffee – that sort of thing). Rarely are OJT students
expected to produce the same products that regular employees produce.

There are sterling exceptions, of course, one of which is the journalism college that I head, where OJT
students, like our own students, write news items in a newspaper just like regular reporters. (Excuse me for
mentioning that, but then, why not?)

Immersion in SHS will be useless if it is patterned after most of the OJT experiences currently being
undertaken by college students.

In order to make Immersion meaningful and useful, we need to get the companies – and not just the
schools – aware of the educational objectives and processes of K to 12.

The human resources departments of companies have to know what it means to handle inexperienced
adolescents (still with no work ethic but with raging hormones), how to make them do without pay what adult
employees are doing for pay, what the design of the curriculum is (Understanding By Design, remember?),
what the role of Immersion is in the whole process of lifelong learning, and so on. That means training for staff
in companies. That means expertise and funds.

“DepEd, in collaboration with its partners and stakeholders, shall ensure that all schools and venues for
learning are conducive to the education and safety of the learners. The safety of learners is primary,” it added.

“Consequently, the maximum number of hours spent in the work immersion venue is 40 hours per week
and no more than eight hours per day as provided by law,” the agency said. DepEd stressed that work
immersion should not be reduced as a mere recruitment tool for a partner institution, saying that the students
should also gain skills that will enable them to qualify for other job options.
“Schools and students should not be asked to pay the senior high school partner institution for any work
immersion activity conducted. Fees for work immersion must only be set after consultation with parents,”
added the guidelines.
One of the goals of the K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop in learners the competencies,
work ethic, and values relevant to pursuing further education and/or joining the world of work. To achieve
greater congruence between basic education and the nation’s development targets, Work Immersion, a
required subject, has been incorporated into the curriculum. This subject will provide learners with
opportunities:

1. To become familiar with the work place;

2. For employment simulation; and
3. To apply their competencies in areas of specialization/applied subjects in authentic work
environments.

To achieve the above objectives, Work Immersion is thus a requirement for graduation from secondary
education. Learners are immersed in actual work environments such as workshops offices and laboratories in
which their prior training is relevant.

Work immersion will help develop among the learner’s life and career skills, and will prepare them to
make decisions on postsecondary education or employment. Through partnership building, DepEd hopes that
the Partner Institutions will provide learners with work immersion opportunities, workplace or hands-on
experience, and additional learning resources. It aims to make the learners:

1. Appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories learned in school;
2. Enhance their technical knowledge and skills;
3. Enrich their skills in communications and human relations; and
4. Develop good work habits, attitudes, appreciation and respect for work.

By the time learners reach Senior High School, they would have already acquired almost all the
competencies and skills that would prepare them for the curriculum exits (higher education, employment,
middle-skills development, and entrepreneurship). Work immersion provides them with an avenue to test
themselves and apply what they have learned in a non-school scenario. In work immersion, learners are not
only able to apply their previous training but are also able to experience the social interactions in a work
environment. Their experiences during work immersion will develop many skills and values that would help
them as they transition from high school to real life.To assure the achievement of the above objectives of Work
Immersion, this policy serves to guide schools in:

1. Creating flexible work immersion arrangements for their learners;

2. Providing options for work immersion that are relevant to learners’ purposes and needs;
3. Organizing work immersion opportunities for learners that are consistent with the diverse human
resource requirements of partner institutions for work immersion; and
4. Articulating the scope and limits of work immersion in the context of basic education when building
relationships with work immersion partners.
In the
approved latest
draft of the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum, students that choose to take the Technical-Vocational-
Livelihood tracks are expected to spend 80 hours outside campus, doing “Immersion.”

The student will spend 80 hours in a company, field, organization, or other workplace on the
second half of Grade 12.

Our country has had a lot of experience with on-the-job training (OJT) programs on the collegiate
level. Unfortunately, many (if not most) college OJT students are assigned only to insignificant jobs in a
company (answering the phone, making photocopies, making coffee – that sort of thing). Rarely are OJT
students expected to produce the same products that regular employees produce.

CAREER GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING

IMMERSION can be used as a facilitative tool for career counselling for students, especially those in
professional courses. By placing them in a real-world work scenario, it gives them an opportunity to explore the
kind of tasks and activities they would like to do. IMMERSION also matches the candidate’s profile with a list of
occupations, which can be used as a reference point for exploring opportunities.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND INTERNAL MOBILITY

IMMERSION highlights individuals’ self-awareness and provides a deeper understanding of their

interests and strengths in a work environment. It guides an individual's career choices by matching their
interests and personality with various job profiles. From an internal mobility perspective, IMMERSION can
facilitate people’s development within a company and encourage those who are looking for growth and
change.

DAILY
ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT
Today is our first day in work immersion and Sir Henry Campos gave us orientation,
he explained to us the rules and regulation in their company. After that we proceed on their
production area, and he introduced us Sir Dexter the supervisor on the production area,
and he assigned us in our different task the others went in packaging area while me and
jenny assigned in icing room and Sir Dexter introduced us on their employees in icing
room. The first task that we assigned us is to frost a cake they taught us how to put icing on
a cake. The first thing we learn is that when you apply icing on a cake it's needed that your
hand is smooth when you apply the icing because there is a possibility to break the cake
when your hand is heavy, when i try it's a bit difficult but it's fun to frost a cake.
That's all I did for the rest of the day.

It's day 2 our second day in icing room. On this day Sir Romel taught us again how to
apply icing on a cake because the first daw we did try I did not learn it immediately. When I
learned it Sir romel assigned me to icing the 12 pcs of choco loco I was able to finish my task
early, so I asked jenny to help me finish the 12 pcs of choco loco, when they finish all they
gave us other work is to decorate the cake. I was so happy when they gave us because i love
to decorate a cake and it was fun experience to decorate cake. And also we experience to be
inventory and it was great to be experience this kind of work. This was my second day and I
hope that I will be able to learn many things.
It's day 3 This day is also the same with the other day. We icing the 12pcs of ube rolls
and 4pcs of choco fudge we finish it immediately because this cake is needed in tayuman
branch. They gave us other task is to decorate all the cake rolls. This day not so tiring day
because their order in different branches is little bit. That's why Sir Romel assigned us in
stock room to do a boxes of cake because we finish all our task early so we need to wait for
6:00pm before we go home.

It's day 4, Sir Romel explained to us their cake, we have rectangular cake, cake roll, and
cake bar on their rectangular cake they have choco fudge, dolce de leche, mocha classic,
choco loco, yema cake and mocha blossom in cake rolls they have choco loco roll, ube
macapuno roll, and dulce leche roll and on the cake bar they have yema bar, dolce de leche
bar and choco crunch bar. After he explained to us their cakes, they gave me a task that i
need to put toppings on their cake roll and they assigned us on the stock room to make a box
of cake while waiting for 6:00pm because we finish early.
Our last day here in icing room. Sir romel taught us on how to make a butterd icing.
They explained to us the ingredients and the procedure of the butterd icing. I feel bored
already of doing the same thing but still i have to maintain a mind when i had my first day the
vision of learning new things and the emotions so that i can fulfil my task every day. I did the
same thing is to icing the cake and decoret again. Sir Dante requested us to assemble the
lego toy that he needed to the cake. This is out last day here in icing room and all they asked
us to don't move in other area and we told them we would also like to experience the other
work not only to icing the cake but also experience new things. They are all kind to us and we
learned a lot from them.

It's day 1 here in packaging area. Where we were transferred together with jenny, nikka,
marvin, jerome, johnrey, jerimae and shaira. Today i experience a new task and that is to
wrap the creamy ensaymada i really consume a lot of time because my hands is palsied and
it so hard to hold the scratch tape. It's is a tiresome day our task all day is package all the
bread. I m so happy because i experience this kind of work even if it tedious.
Today i did the same this as what i did yesterday. We wrap up again the creamy
ensaymada. Erika taught us how to put buttercream icing on the ensaymada and she
assigned me to buttercream the ensaymada it is plenty and i will not finish it alone so that
i asked nikka to help me. The other task that we gave for me is to transferred the finish
product in the tray and it so tiring because the tray is so heavy that's why my back hurts.

Today's task for me is to cut the whole egg pie and it is not easy for me to cut because it
so soft and it need to be careful when cutting it. The next task that i do is putting stickers on
the transparent plastic box then i went to jerome to help her on their task. We arrange all the
mongo roll in the tray. We finish early because the orders little bit that's why we go in baker
area to help and i experience to mass bread. It was a tiring day.
Today is a busy day because it christmas season and so many orders that we need to
do. I assigned to package all the flossy meat roll at the same time i also arrange the flossy
on the tray. Sir ralph asked me to help her to put all the pandecoco on the machine so me
and jerome assigned to machine when they all done the other task that i do is to put pastry
cakes on the paper cupcakes while the others is assigned to arranged the pastry cupcakes
on this box. I consider this day as the most tiring but the happiest as well. I was sweaty and
exhausted but still i m happy to help the employees in their work, It feels great.

Today is our last day here in King's Bakeshop also in packaging area. We assigned us
in packaging the ube munchers and also we packaging pizza roun, creamy ensaymada.
Ma'am nette asked me to help her package the muffins and we did the thing as what we
did yesterday. We finish early. Happiness is on air because this is the our last day. But i
learn many things not only those things that are related to my course but also the things
that molded me into the person i am right now. As i was working as a on-the-job training
at king's bakeshop, I learned to become hard working person. And also I realized that no
matter how small the task may seem, I always came out of it learning something.

WEEKLY ACTIVITY REPORT

My first week started Dec 1O, 2018 and ended Dec 17, 2018 for my first week
I learn a lot of things some of it I adopt and apply to myself and some of it helps develop
my skills and enhance my knowledge. I was so thankful that I have my OJT in this
company. I learn to be more patient in every task that given to me, to be nice and humble
in every person I interact and most of all to love my work.

My second week started Dec 18, 2018 and ended Dec 22, 2018 for my second week
it was a truly amazing experience to get to work with such good people and to learn a lot.
It made me realized weather it is easy or hard task you need to do it well. This made me
prepared for the real life I will face now that I am about to graduate. Fulfilling my tasks
everyday gives me that feeling of accomplishment that I can do things well. This
experience made me better, wiser and smarter in decision making.
