INTRODUCTION • Educator will put a map of the world on your classroom wall. Learners can bring cuttings of news items from
around the world to class. Pin each news item on the board surrounding the world map and run a string from
news item to the place on the map where it happened.
• Educator can also remind learners about lines of Latitude and longitude as they have learnt in grade 6.

CONCEPTS
1. Current events-news about people and places that takes place in the present
2. Meridian- a specific line of longitude running down the globe
3. Nuclear-the use of energy produced by changes taking place in atoms.
4. Intensified-to become stronger, in this case, worse
5. Evacuated-to be to leave a place, usually in an emergency.
6. Tsunami – an enormous wave of sea water caused by an earthquake.

CONSOLIDATION
Ask these questions about each of your news events and write down the answers. Here is an example above:
1. What happened?
=An explosion at a nuclear plant
2. Where did it happened?
= Fukushima, near Sendai, Japan
3. When did it happen?
= 14 March 2011
4. Why did it happen?
=Because of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan three days before.

Do this activity as a class:
1. Each week in class, select and talk about any recent world events or topics of interest.
2. Make a small card or label for each, like the ones shown on the map above, and stick the label onto a large map in your
classroom so everyone can see it
