Reaction Paper 1 - Definition of Globalization

Globalization started in ancient times through systems of trade between different places and peoples. Over time, as barriers between countries broke down and technology advanced, globalization intensified to connect societies across the world in economic, political, cultural, and technological domains. The Philippines has participated in globalization throughout its history via relationships with other countries like China, India, Japan, and the United States. Today, the Philippines remains integrated in the globalized world through foreign investment, cultural exchange online and through media, and economic interdependence with other nations in trade.

Reaction Paper: Defining Globalization

The word globalization is not obscure to us. We may not always feel or
experience it, but globalization is always happening around us. We often hear it on
the news, social media, or from our teachers while they are discussing economics.
Nowadays, we cannot set aside ourselves from the processes of globalization. From
my perspective, I think of globalization as an event today. My understanding of it is
shallow, but I know that our world today is already globalized, and I know that most
of us have this thought as well. But what really is globalization? When did it start?
How did it start? Are we living in a globalized world? Is the Philippines a globalized
nation?

Globalization started a very long time ago. This may sound funny, but it
started during ancient times. Back then, they already had a system of trading. Since
resources are not always present in one place, ancient people will go to a foreign
land to trade goods with the people living in it. We are not an exception to this
phenomenon. Before Spain colonize our land, our ancestors already practiced trade
with foreign people. According to Amalia Ferrer in her article entitled Reduccion sa
Bohol Dantaon 16 hangang 19 (2005), some missionaries and Spanish soldiers
witnessed ships with a design similar to the South East Asian designs. With these,
they concluded that ancient Filipinos already have a relationship with other
countries. This is just one part of the many trading partners our ancestors had. They
traded with Chinses, Indians, and Japanese. The trade that our ancestors had not
just shown the trading of goods, but exchanging of ideas, culture, and
commonalities as well.

Globalization, according to Manfred Steger, is the process of expansion and

intensification of social relations and consciousness across world-time and world-
space. It covers a multi-dimensional phenomenon involving economics, politics,
culture, ideology, environment, and technology. This means that globalization opens
our minds to the movement of the globe. The world that we live in right now is more
connected and advanced than before. We cannot only focus on our nation—our
politics, economy, culture, and the way we live. Because of Globalization, different
countries are bringing down their borders and barriers for the people of the world to
witness and experience what they have.
We have the thought that globalization is only focused on trades, economies,
international relations and peace, and money. However, the definition of Steger
proved that it covers different dimensions. Its concerns are not only on the
relationship with other countries and how to persuade them to invest in us. It also
covers the political situation of integrated countries, the globalization of culture, and
the ideas and information countries have.
We may like it or not, but the Philippines is already part of a globalized world. For
the whole history of our country, we are already soaked with relations with other
countries, especially the United States of America. Our generation right now is
heavily reliant on the products and services of other countries. Our culture also
changed as time goes by. We are now exposed to different cultures in the world by
the means of social media and the internet. Our political system is also influenced by
western ideas. Our country is developing because different foreign investors are
investing in our countries, businesses from other countries are present in us, and
trade barriers within southeast Asia were already lowered. There are many benefits
our country experienced because we participated in globalization.
