EMERGENCY LIGHTING SYSTEM

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 The whole of the emergency lighting system shall comply with the EN 1838, EN 10598-2,
EN 60598-2-22 & EN 1010. The emergency lighting system including wiring and
equipment shall also comply with the other relevant sections of this specification.
1.2 Emergency lighting shall be provided by means of individual rechargeable battery/inverter
packs connected to fluorescent luminaires in locations shown on the drawings marked
"/E". Luminaires designated as emergency lights shall be wired such that under normal
operation in a mains healthy situation an unswitched supply is always present at the
terminals regardless of the status of any light switch. Under normal circumstances the
batteries shall be under charge as required and the luminaire tube shall be operated at
full rated lumen output from the mains supply.
1.3 Upon failure of the normal mains supply to the luminaire the battery/inverter unit shall
automatically take over to maintain one of the luminaire's fluorescent tubes at a minimum
of 15% the normal lumen output for a minimum of 3 hours irrespective of the position of
the light switch. The emergency supply shall not be energised by normal on/off
operations of the light switch.
1.4 Surface and semi recessed fitting (and recessed fitting where lack of air circulation would
cause the battery pack harm) with Emergency lighting shall have a self contained
separate battery/charger pack mounted close to the fitting unless otherwise specified.
1.5 Battery/Inverter units shall be self-contained units enclosed in a sheet steel case, where
remote mounted.
1.6 Batteries shall be of the high temperature rechargeable sealed nickel cadmium type
suitable for operating temperatures of 55 deg. C. with a minimum life expectancy of 4
years. Charge characteristics shall not be detrimentally affected by ambient temperature
and humidity variations.
1.7 The direct-measured cell temperature operating ranges shall be as follows:

Storage - 40 deg. C to + 65 deg. C.

Discharge - 20 deg. C to + 65 deg. C.
Charge + 5 deg. C to + 65 deg. C.
1.8 Inverter circuits shall be compatible with both the battery as above and the luminaire.
1.9 The voltage monitoring circuitry shall automatically switch the battery/inverter circuit to
the luminaire upon failure of the mains supply. Upon reinstatement of the mains supply
the monitoring circuit shall automatically revert the luminaire back to the mains supply
and commence recharging the batteries.
1.10 The battery inverter unit shall contain an integral charger unit which shall constantly
monitor the battery state to ensure that it is always maintained at full charge.
1.11 On the side of the luminaire or on the facia of the battery charger unit shall be
mounted a key operated switch to test each unit individually.
1.12 Visible indicator pilot lights shall be provided to show the unit is charging.
1.13 The emergency lighting system shall be of the type specified elsewhere in this
specification and shall be complete with batteries, chargers, luminaires and wiring all as
necessary to provide a complete working installation.
1.14 The system shall be so configured to ensure that it operates not only under complete
failure of the main electrical system but also under local failure including final circuit
failure as required by EN 1838, EN 10598-2, EN 60598-2-22 & EN 1010.
1.15 Where conversion kits are specified for luminaires, these shall be factory fitted.
1.16 Charging monitors comprising red Light Emitting Diode's LED's) shall be mounted to
be clearly visible when the normal luminaire diffuser is in position. All self contained
luminaires and luminaires incorporating conversion kits shall be fed via a separate live
feed from the local lighting circuit. This feed will be switched via a key switch installed in
the local lighting switchplate to facilitate the testing of the emergency lighting.
1.17 Battery packs for all self contained emergency luminaires shall be suitable to operate
the luminaires for 3 hours and the charger unit shall be suitable to recharge the batteries
with 24 hours. The batteries shall high temperature nickel cadmium batteries.
1.18 All wiring associated with central battery systems including the interconnection
between the central battery distribution panel, local emergency lighting distribution
boards and the luminaires or slave converting kits shall be completed in MICS white LSF
sheathed cable.

2.0 Standard References

2.1 Wherever reference is made to a British Standard (BS), a British Standard Institution
recognized equivalent European Standard would also comply. Each type of
equipment/material selected shall comply fully with either the BS or the European
Standard.
2.2 Listed below are the Standards and Codes referred to in this section:-

EN 1838 Lighting applications - emergency lighting

EN 10598-2
EN 60598-2-22
