Emergency Lighting System
Emergency Lighting System
1.0 GENERAL
1.1 The whole of the emergency lighting system shall comply with the EN 1838, EN 10598-2,
EN 60598-2-22 & EN 1010. The emergency lighting system including wiring and
equipment shall also comply with the other relevant sections of this specification.
1.2 Emergency lighting shall be provided by means of individual rechargeable battery/inverter
packs connected to fluorescent luminaires in locations shown on the drawings marked
"/E". Luminaires designated as emergency lights shall be wired such that under normal
operation in a mains healthy situation an unswitched supply is always present at the
terminals regardless of the status of any light switch. Under normal circumstances the
batteries shall be under charge as required and the luminaire tube shall be operated at
full rated lumen output from the mains supply.
1.3 Upon failure of the normal mains supply to the luminaire the battery/inverter unit shall
automatically take over to maintain one of the luminaire's fluorescent tubes at a minimum
of 15% the normal lumen output for a minimum of 3 hours irrespective of the position of
the light switch. The emergency supply shall not be energised by normal on/off
operations of the light switch.
1.4 Surface and semi recessed fitting (and recessed fitting where lack of air circulation would
cause the battery pack harm) with Emergency lighting shall have a self contained
separate battery/charger pack mounted close to the fitting unless otherwise specified.
1.5 Battery/Inverter units shall be self-contained units enclosed in a sheet steel case, where
remote mounted.
1.6 Batteries shall be of the high temperature rechargeable sealed nickel cadmium type
suitable for operating temperatures of 55 deg. C. with a minimum life expectancy of 4
years. Charge characteristics shall not be detrimentally affected by ambient temperature
and humidity variations.
1.7 The direct-measured cell temperature operating ranges shall be as follows:
2.1 Wherever reference is made to a British Standard (BS), a British Standard Institution
recognized equivalent European Standard would also comply. Each type of
equipment/material selected shall comply fully with either the BS or the European
Standard.
2.2 Listed below are the Standards and Codes referred to in this section:-
