Business Analysis - Introduction

Business Analysis is a disciplined approach for introducing and managing change to


organizations.

It is used to identify and articulate the need for change in how organizations
work, and to facilitate that change.
It is also used to identify and define the solutions that will maximize the value
delivered by an organization to its stakeholders.
It works across all levels of an organization and is involved in everything from
defining strategy, to creating the enterprise architecture, to defining the goals
and requirements for programs and projects or supporting continuous improvement in
its technology and processes.

The value of business analysis is in realization of benefits, avoidance of cost,


identification of new opportunities, understanding of required capabilities and
modeling the organization.

Business Analysis is a professional discipline of identifying business needs and


determining solutions of business problems. Solutions often include a software
systems development component, process improvements, organizational change,
strategic planning or policy development.

Business Analysis can be understood as a research discipline that helps in finding


business needs and identifying solutions to business problems.
The purpose of business analysis is to identify solutions that meet the need for
improvement.
Business Analysis Process offers concepts and insights into the development of the
initial framework for any project or program.

Business Analysis is the set of tasks, knowledge, and techniques required to


identify business needs and determine solutions to enterprise business problems.
It may also be performed to understand the current state of an organization or to
serve as a basis for identification of business needs or to define and validate
solutions that meet business needs, goals, or objectives.

Business Analysis is about understanding how an organization functions to fulfill


its purpose. It entails defining the abilities the firm needs to provide products
to the external stakeholders.
Business Analysis can be conducted to get an overview of the current state of a
company. It is often performed to state and confirm solutions which meet business
needs or goals.

According to the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA), "Business


Analysis is the practice of enabling change in an enterprise by defining needs and
recommending solutions that deliver value to stakeholders."
It enables an enterprise to articulate needs and the rationale for change, and to
design and describe solutions that can deliver value.
Business Analysis is a strategy for initiating and managing change in
organizations.
It is used to locate and communicate the need for change in how organizations
operate, as well as to help organizations to implement that change.

The objectives of business analysis are as follows -

1. Discovering cost inefficiencies and controlling project cost by eliminating


staff redundancies, improving productivity and using data to make cost-saving
decisions.

2. Increasing business retention by identifying client challenges, improving


services, offering new products and new services to existing customers.

3. Improving communication by finding and implementing techniques that streamline


communication, document sharing, and project management, cumulatively to promote
overall performance that can benefit productivity, efficiency and morale.

4. Building stronger relationships that can strengthen collaboartion between


departments, in order to improve current projects and help new projects function
smoothly.

5. Evaluating business needs to identify areas of strength and opportunities of


improvements, by gathering necessary information to recommend improvemenst in
efficiency and resource allocation.

Steps involved in business analysis are as follows -

1. Get oriented.
- Determining who the primary stakeholders are.
- Clarify the scope, requirements, and business objectives.
- Having a clear understanding of the project history.
- Understanding the existing systems and processes.
