Lesson 5: Background on Parasite

SWBAT: describe and think about the facets of Parasite as a non-literary work.
At a glance
Parasite is a 2019 Korean-language film directed by Bong Joon Ho.

It is a darkly comedic social satire about the struggles people face depending on
social class.

It follows a poor family who gradually infiltrate a wealthy Seoul family in the guise
of servants.

It features a suspenseful plot that moves in many different directions.

Bong Joon Ho
- A Korean filmmaker known for writing scripts that are
rich with dark humor and dramatic tone shifts.
- His films often focus on real-world social issues, like
Okja, which is about the cruelty of the meat trade, or
Snowpiercer, which is a long metaphor for social
class.
Title metaphor
In the words of the director of Parasite:

"Because the story is about the poor family infiltrating and creeping into the rich
house, it seems very obvious that Parasite refers to the poor family (...) But if you
look at it the other way, you can say that rich families, they're also parasites in terms
of labor. They can't even wash dishes, they can't drive themselves, so they leech off
the poor family's labor. So both are parasites."

The dual metaphor is supposed to be very deliberate and is a reflection of Bong

Joon Ho’s perspective on how we interact with each other in Capitalist society.
Movement choreography
The movement of characters, along with camera
movements have been referred to as balletic by critics.

Characters move and act in time with the classical score.

This is designed to draw audience attention but also to

create a robotic, otherworldly feel to the family that are
feeding off of the household.

It is also at times used to create humor.

Bong Joon Ho has used a style similar to this in his other

works.
Visual metaphor
The poor family live underground and view the world above through their window.
This is a deliberate choice to show their place in society.
Visual metaphor
The rich family live in a house on top of a hill, with open, green spaces, showing
their dominance over society.
Visual metaphor
When rain comes and floods the city of seoul, the poor family are affected the
most as the water trickles into their apartment.
Visual metaphor
From the rich family’s perspective, the rain is a novelty and something to be
enjoyed.
Western acceptance
Parasite won the academy award for best
picture in 2019, the first non
English-language film to do so.

This marks a trend in Hollywood in which

foreign-language films are becoming more
and more accepted in the mainstream.
How to access and watch the film
If you have access to Netflix, simply find it there and watch it. Make sure you
watch with English subtitles.

----Alternatively----

You will need:

VLC media player

The MP4 of Parasite

The SRT file for English Subtitles

Questions while watching

2. How do camera angle, movement, mise en scene and lighting portray the environments
of the wealthy family and the poor family?
3. Find at least two examples of the fluid, balletic or exaggerated movement of the
characters. What does this movement do to imbue character?
4. What is Bong Joon Ho trying to say about the effects of modern capitalism on our
society?
5. Does this film tell us anything about Korea’s cultural perceptions of class? If so, what?
6. How is violence used in the film, what does it attempt to convey?
7. We looked at two ways the parasite metaphor could be interpreted, what is the third?
8. What Global issues from the 4 works we read last year could you connect to this film?
9. What about the film has made it so popular with audiences outside of Korea?
1. Make sure you have both files downloaded on your
computer.
2. Open the parasite MP4 with VLC media player...
Go to the section that reads: “add subtitles”...
