Assignment 2 2021
Assignment 2 2021
• The questions in this assignment account for a total of 22 points. This assignment has a 15%
contribution to your final 4AT060 Powertrains (ED) / 5AT010 Electric Components grade.
Question 1a 1b 1c 1d 2a 2b 2c 2d
Points 2 1 1 2 2 1 5 8
• Please write a report with your answers and reasonings, where required. You are asked to
name your files in exactly the following way:
▪ report in pdf format (LastName_StudentNumber.pdf)
▪ Simulink model for Question 2c not newer than MatLab 2021a
(LastName_StudentNumber_ex2c.slx)
▪ Matlab runner script for Question 2c (LastName_StudentNumber_ex2c.m)
Extensive submission instructions are provided on the Canvas page of the assignment.
• Keep in mind that your model and script are contributing to your grade. Figures must be
produced in MatLab. Your code and model must run without errors and should produce
the required graphs. Points will be deducted if otherwise.
• Although you can discuss the exercises as a group, write the answers in your own words.
• The questions follow a logical order. Therefore, you are advised to solve them in that order.
Question 1. The TRUCK/e, which you designed in Instructions 1, uses brushed DC motors. Given the
additional information for the electrical motor in the table below, find the following parameters of
the machine (show your derivations):
d. If the transmission is changed to a multi-speed transmission (e.g. 2-speed, CVT), what would
be the effect on the torque-speed capability of the vehicle? (2 points)
Hint: Think about the torque capability of the motor vs. the torque capability of the vehicle
Question 2. The brushed DC motors from Question 1 (separately excited, but with permanent
magnets) can be represented by an equivalent circuit from the figure below, for dynamic models.
You will note an additional inductor which represents the leakage inductance. This accounts for the
undesired inductance within the armature windings. This can be thought of as an additional voltage
drop on the armature. As you recall the voltage drop across an inductor is given by
𝑑𝑖
𝑉𝐿 = 𝐿𝑎 𝑑𝑡 .
a. Write the voltage equation for the electrical circuit (include the voltage across 𝐿𝑎 as well). (2
points)
b. Write an expression for the motor torque, based on the current through the armature. (1
point)
c. Using the provided Simulink model (‘model.slx’) and MatLab script (‘runner.m’), create a
dynamic model, now including the motor torque with a voltage input. You can assume the
motor inertia is already included in the equivalent mass. Please include your name and
student number as comment both in the model and the script. (Simulink model and Matlab
script required) (5 points)
d. Run the simulation by supplying the motor with the rated voltage, accelerating the vehicle
from standstill (maximum acceleration). Run the simulation for 100s. Use two motors with
with single transmission (gear ratio 24.5). (8 points)
i. Plot vehicle speed, motor speed, single motor torque, and single motor current
versus time. (Matlab plots required, please ensure appropriate labelling etc.)
