ALTERNATING CURRENT AND

DIRECT CURRENT

KIRSTINA N. MANALO, MIT, LPT

INTRODUCTION
• Electricity flows in two ways, either AC (alternating current) or DC (direct
current).
• Electricity or "current" is nothing but the movement of electrons through a
conductor, like a wire.
• The difference between AC and DC lies in the direction in which the
electrons flow.
• In DC, the electrons flow steadily in a single direction, or "forward." In AC,
electrons keep switching directions, sometimes going "forward" and then
going "backward."
AC VS DC
AC AND DC COMPARISON CHART
Alternating Current Direct Current
Amount of energy that Safe to transfer over longer city distances and Voltage of DC cannot travel very far
can be carried can provide more power. until it begins to lose energy.
Cause of the direction Rotating magnet along the wire. Steady magnetism along the wire.
of flow of electrons
Frequency The frequency of alternating current is 50Hz or The frequency of direct current is
60Hz depending upon the country. zero.
Direction It reverses its direction while flowing in a circuit. It flows in one direction in the circuit.
Current It is the current of magnitude varying with time It is the current of constant
magnitude.
Flow of Electrons Electrons keep switching directions - forward and Electrons move steadily in one
backward. direction or 'forward'.
Obtained from A.C Generator and mains. Cell or Battery.
Passive Parameters Impedance. Resistance only
Power Factor Lies between 0 & 1. it is always 1.
Types Sinusoidal, Trapezoidal, Triangular, Square. Pure and pulsating.

ALTERNATING CURRENT

• Abbreviation AC, flow of electric charge that periodically reverses. ...

• It starts, say, from zero, grows to a maximum, decreases to zero,
reverses, reaches a maximum in the opposite direction, returns again
to the original value, and repeats this cycle indefinitely.
• Ex: Electricity coming from the wall outlet
DIRECT CURRENT

• Abbreviated as DC
• Type of electrical current, in which the direction of the flow of electrons
switches back and forth at regular intervals or cycles. ...
• Direct current (DC) is electrical current which flows consistently in one
direction.
• Has positive (+) and negative (-) terminals
• Ex: Electrical charge from charged batteries
