School Policy
Policies are important because they help a school establish rules and procedures and
create standards of quality for learning and safety, as well as expectations and
accountability. Without these, schools would lack the structure and function necessary
to provide the educational needs of students. Ultimately, policies are necessary to the
success and safety of a school.
Attendance- Absence from school, regardless of the reason limits your child’s
educational opportunities and can negatively affect his/ her grades and academic
achievement.
Extended Absence- If you know that your child will be absent for 5 or more
consecutive days, please contact the office so we can arrange an Independent Study
Agreement.
Tardies- Students arriving after the tardy bell are tardy. Each tardy means valuable
instructional time is lost. If your child is tardy he or she should report to the office for a
tardy slip.
Visitors on Campus- All visitors must sign in at the main office when they arrive and
sign out when they leave. This policy is for the safety of students, visitors, and staff. The
school needs to know who is on campus at all times. All visitors must wear a badge
while on school grounds. This badge/Visiting badges lets the other adults on campus
know that you have signed in.
The school staff has collaborated to adopt school-wide guidelines of expected behavior
for all of its locations. Our aim is to develop a school that is safe, respectful, and
responsible. The following guidelines have been developed.
Rewards for appropriate behavior may include being recognized as a role model for
other students; earning positions of responsibility and leadership; receiving a positive
note or call home; attaining public recognition; earning leaves for exemplifying one of
the Individual Learner profile traits; and having personal satisfaction for doing the right
thing.
Suspensions
A child who gets into serious trouble at school can be suspended for a fixed period of
time. Schools can suspend a child if:
The school should call you on the day your child is suspended. The Principal must also
provide immediate written notification to you, the Chair of the Board of members of
School. The letter should set out the period and reason for the suspension .
Expulsions
A school will usually only expel a pupil as a last resort after trying to improve the pupil’s
behaviour through other means. However, there are exceptional circumstances in which
a school may decide to expel a pupil for a ‘one-off’ offence.
The decision to expel your child can only be taken by the expelling authority, in the case
of serious issue of indiscipline and criminal offence.
A decision to expel can only be made after a consultation meeting takes place between
the Principal, the Chairperson of the Board of members. There should be a written
record of the meeting and your child’s future education should be part of the discussion.
