What is the primary group’s name that is the focus of discussion in this episode?

Who is part of the

primary group in this episode?

Los Frikis, Vladimir Ceballos

In class we have discussed the term groupthink, which is a tendency of very cohesive groups to enforce
a high degree of conformity among members. From this episode, provide three examples of groupthink
that Los Frikis exhibited and explain why these are examples of groupthink

One example would be when the group would purposefully give themselves HIV. They believed that this
is what made one a part of Los Frikis.

Another would be style. In the podcast, they talked about the group wearing ripped jeans and having
long hair, which was considered “different” at the time. When someone was found with long hair, they
would be beaten, and possibly put to work.

Along with style, they would listen to rock music. Both the rock music and the clothing were a rebellious
act amongst them.

Explain 2 examples of influential power AND 2 examples of coercive power that was exercised by either:
the institutions in Cuban society, Los Frikis, or Papo La Bala. For each example, why are these examples
of power?

Papo La Bala would be an example of influential power. He gave himself HIV, which influenced many
other people to do the same to themselves. Since this caused others to do the same, the police had to
get involved. They were sent to a sanitorium, which is a medical facility for long term illnesses.

Los Frikis would be a big example of influential power as well. They would try to rope in people to
basically rebel against social norms with them.

Another Coercive power example would be the Cuban society. One major thing was when someone with
long hair was found, and it was cut off immediately.

Describe an example in which Los Frikis conform to the in-group via compliance, identification, or
internalization.

Identification. Since the group is doing many things, such as rebelling against the “norms”, having long
hair, “edgy” style ect. Along with also injecting themselves with HIV infected blood. Many people would
follow up behind them with the way they were choosing to live their life.

Explain how Los Frikis are conforming while at the same time how they are rebelling against the social
norms of society?

While Los Frikis didn’t exactly do morally right things, some things weren’t very socially accepted at the
time. Injecting yourself with HIV is just something you wouldn’t typically see someone do, mainly
because that is hazardous. When they would do things, such as have a different style, or listen to rock
music, that wasn’t illegal, it just went against societies norms with the time being. Everything may seem
very confusing, because even though they were punished for things they did, that does not mean that
they were being criminals for having long hair and listening to rock music.
