Summarizing
Summarizing refers to the process of taking all the main points and
facts from a lengthy chapter, theory, or write-up and condensing
them into a shorter version that cover all the details. Note that an
ideal size of a summary should only be 1/3 of the original text.

Passage A
In art, artists are a special group of people who are more sensitive and more
creative than the common/ordinary people in some specific areas. The artist’s
creative imagination can reach far beyond the farthest reach of thoughts of
ordinary persons; they possess an unusual degree or knack for interpreting
ideas into artistic forms through the use of words, pigments, stones, whether
those are seen out in nature or of those that they feel inside them. Every artist
should make improvements or help seek improvement for the benefit of society;
every artist should manifest his desire to help improve the lives of the people
and society through his/her artworks (Ferraro in Ang, p. 41).

Passage B
Since the 1980s, the Philippine economy has been increasingly dependent on
remittances of Filipinos who earn their living in other countries. Overseas
Filipino Workers (OFWs) are actually the lifeline of the Filipino nation as their
remittances now account for a significant portion of the country’s revenues. In
2003, for example, OFW remittances amounted to over US $7.6 billion, which
was 6.3% higher than in 2002, and which represented about 9% of the country’s
GNP. In 2004, this figure increased another 11% and totaled US $8.5 billion. For
most jobs available to OFWs, proficiency in English communication is a
prerequisite. As more jobs become available in a global economy, it is
understandable that government planners are placing greater emphasis on
acquiring such language skills.

ACTIVITY 3. Read the short biography of Nick Vujicic below. Afterwhich, write
a summary of the passage of not more than 5-7 sentences.
Nick prayed very hard that God would give him arms and legs, and initially told
God that, if his prayer remained unanswered, Nick would not praise him
indefinitely. However, a key turning point in his faith came when his mother
showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severe disability.
Vujicic realized he wasn't unique in his struggles and began to embrace his lack
of limbs. After this, Nick realized his accomplishments could inspire others and
became grateful for his life.

Nick gradually figured out how to live a full life without limbs, adapting many of
the daily skills limbed people accomplish without thinking. Nick writes with two
toes on his left foot and a special grip that slid onto his big toe. He knows how
to use a computer and can type up to 45 words per minute using the "heel and
toe" method. He has also learned to throw tennis balls, play drum pedals, get a
glass of water, comb his hair, brush his teeth, answer the phone and shave, in
addition to participating in golf, swimming, and even sky-diving.
