Summarizing
Summarizing refers to the process of taking all the main points and
facts from a lengthy chapter, theory, or write-up and condensing
them into a shorter version that cover all the details. Note that an
ideal size of a summary should only be 1/3 of the original text.

ACTIVITY 1. Summarize the following passages in not more than 1-2 sentences.

Passage A

Distillation is a widely used method by which a liquid is evaporated and then

condensed. To separate a mixture of liquids, the liquid can be heated to force
components that have different boiling points into the gas phase. The has is
then condensed back into the liquid form and collected. Repeating the process
on the collected liquid to improve the purity of the product is called double
distillation. Although the term is most commonly applied to liquids, the reverse
process can be used to separate gases by liquefying components using changes
in temperature and/or pressure. Distillation is used for many commercial
processes (Gabelo, Bantilan, Concepcion, Girado, James, Lasalita, Lovitos,
Millondaga, Rosalita, p. 157)

Quality time is commonly defined as giving undivided attention in order to

strengthen relationships. It is often in reference to members of the family, who
are always sacrificed in this polychronic, productivity-obsessed, and
multitasking world. It must be remembered that quality time is about more of
quality than time. Thus, regardless of the little time there is, quality time is still
possible. In fact, quantity time does not automatically result in quality time. How
we demonstrate quality time is always a challenge. It thrives on many factors
that are unique in each culture (Amorado, p. 69)

ACTIVITY 2. Read each of the following passages and…

Create a title for the passage; and
Accurately summarize the text in not more than 2-3 sentences.

Remember that your summary must describe all the key ideas from the text and
you should not include opinions or personal information.

Passage A

In art, artists are a special group of people who are more sensitive and more
creative than the common/ordinary people in some specific areas. The artist’s
creative imagination can reach far beyond the farthest reach of thoughts of
ordinary persons; they possess an unusual degree or knack for interpreting
ideas into artistic forms through the use of words, pigments, stones, whether
those are seen out in nature or of those that they feel inside them. Every artist
should make improvements or help seek improvement for the benefit of society;
every artist should manifest his desire to help improve the lives of the people
and society through his/her artworks (Ferraro in Ang, p. 41).

Passage B

Since the 1980s, the Philippine economy has been increasingly dependent on
remittances of Filipinos who earn their living in other countries. Overseas
Filipino Workers (OFWs) are actually the lifeline of the Filipino nation as their
remittances now account for a significant portion of the country’s revenues. In
2003, for example, OFW remittances amounted to over US $7.6 billion, which
was 6.3% higher than in 2002, and which represented about 9% of the country’s
GNP. In 2004, this figure increased another 11% and totaled US $8.5 billion. For
most jobs available to OFWs, proficiency in English communication is a
prerequisite. As more jobs become available in a global economy, it is
understandable that government planners are placing greater emphasis on
acquiring such language skills.

ACTIVITY 3. Read the short biography of Nick Vujicic below. Afterwhich, write
a summary of the passage of not more than 5-7 sentences.

Nick Vujicic was born to Dushka and Boris Vujicic in

1982 in Melbourne, Australia. Although he was an
otherwise healthy baby, Nick was born without arms and
legs; he had no legs, but two small feet, one of which
had two toes. Nick has two siblings, Michelle and Aaron.
Initially, a Victoria state law prevented Nick from
attending a mainstream school due to his physical
disability in spite of a lack of mental impairment.
However, Vujicic became one of the first physically
disabled students integrated into a mainstream school
once those laws changed. However, his lack of limbs
made him a target for school bullies, and he fell into a severe depression. At age
eight, he contemplated suicide and even tried to drown himself in his bathtub at
age ten; his love for his parents prevented him from following through. He also
stated in his music video "Something More" that God had a plan for his life and
he could not bring himself to drown because of this.

Nick prayed very hard that God would give him arms and legs, and initially told
God that, if his prayer remained unanswered, Nick would not praise him
indefinitely. However, a key turning point in his faith came when his mother
showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severe disability.
Vujicic realized he wasn't unique in his struggles and began to embrace his lack
of limbs. After this, Nick realized his accomplishments could inspire others and
became grateful for his life.

Nick gradually figured out how to live a full life without limbs, adapting many of
the daily skills limbed people accomplish without thinking. Nick writes with two
toes on his left foot and a special grip that slid onto his big toe. He knows how
to use a computer and can type up to 45 words per minute using the "heel and
toe" method. He has also learned to throw tennis balls, play drum pedals, get a
glass of water, comb his hair, brush his teeth, answer the phone and shave, in
addition to participating in golf, swimming, and even sky-diving.

Performance Task 2. Oral Reading Fluency - READ ALOUD

Oral reading fluency means being able to read a text quickly, accurately, and
with expression. Recording and reading aloud is a good strategy for becoming a
more fluent reader.

Directions: To practice reading fluently:

1. Set a timer for 40 seconds minute;
2. Read the passage as quickly and accurately as possible;
3. Mark the last word you read when the timer goes off;
4. Practice more until you are able to read the entire passage for the whole 40
seconds, without missing a word.
5. Refer to your teacher for his/her modified instructions (if any) and for the
submission process.

Summarizing teaches students how to discern the most important

ideas in a text, how to ignore irrelevant information, and how to
integrate the central ideas in a meaningful way. Summarization
strategies can be used in almost every content area. Here are a
few reasons why summarizing is a great reading skill: First, It
helps students learn to determine essential ideas and consolidate
important details that support them. Second, it enables students
to focus on keywords and phrases of an assigned text that are
worth noting and remembering. And third, it teaches students
how to take a large selection of text and reduce it to the main
points for a more concise understanding. Thus, summarizing is
an essential skill in reading comprehension.
