1.a) What is a denture base? b) What type of wax is used for the construction of denture base?
A denture base is that part of the artificial denture that rest into the soft tissues of the mouth
and where the artificial teeth are embedded. Possessing wax is used for the construction of
denture base.
2.What are the ingredients of the liquid heat-cured acrylic resin and give its contribution?
Acrylic resin (insoluble) is made up of liquid (monomer) and powder (polymer). Monomer is
essentially made of methyl methacrylate and hydroquinone which is an inhibitor – it inhibits the
polymerization or the hardening of the resin. If something is wrong during the mixing of the
liquid in powder, the problem is not the powder it is on the liquid because the presence of
hydroquinone is the one that preserves the life span of the acrylic resin. Polymer is essentially
made of polymethyl methacrylate, benzoil peroxide – is an initiator – it initiates the hardening of
the acrylic resin, dibutyl phthalate is a plasticizer – to not make it to sticky, gelatin talc, nylon
fibers and coloring ingredients.
3.Enumerate the stages during the mixing of the liquid and powder heat cured acrylic resin and
describe each briefly.
1. Damp sand stage fluid, incoherent mass (sandy) - Allow the powder to settle into the mixing
jar, mix it for 1 minute, you will notice that it is fluid - there is an incoherent mass – it feels like
sand (rough)when touched. After a few seconds try to open the mixing jar and try to touch it. If
it’s no longer like sand, then it is now sticky. 2. Sticky stage - sticky, threadlike in appearance - If
touched and pulled apart it exhibits a threadlike appearance like a spider web. Cover the mixing
jar and after a few seconds open it and try to touch it, if it’s no longer sticky, then it is should be
doughlike in appearance. 3. dough/gel-no longer sticky, doughlike in appearance - It does not
adhere to the walls of the mixing jar and likewise when you touched it with your hand. This the
important stage amongst the other stages because this is you are going to put the acrylic into
the mold space. You don’t carry it in any other stages because it will cause internal porosities.
On the dough stage when you carry it into the mold space, immediately do the trial closure. The
rubbery space and stiff stage are no longer important. 4. rubbery stage - rubberized and soft 5.
stiff stage - evaporation of monomer and hard material.
7.What is the contribution of a) nylon fibers b) dibutyl phthalate to heat cured acrylic resin.
a) Nylon fibers contribute to the strength of heat-cured resin b) dibutyl phthalate is a plasticizer
that makes it sticky.
During investing, in capping technique, before you put the upper half of the flask you apply
separating medium and you have to put a little bit of dental stone covering the artificial teeth.
With this method, its advantage is that with the dental stone you can identify the location of the
artificial teeth. Without its location during the removal of dentures, you might break the artificial
teeth.
9.a_ Define mold. b) What is the investing material for a non-metallic denture base.
a) Mold is the space previously occupied by the wax. b) Dental Plaster or the Plaster of Paris – is
the investing material used in a non-metallic denture base.
In trial closure, the mold should have an adequate resin. Inadequate resin causes porosities. You
close the upper and lower half of the denture flask and apply sufficient pressure. Insufficient
pressure causes internal porosities. That is why Trial closure is important for you to avoid these
porosities.
