82SXN 'SXN' Running Tool Operation Manual: Design Overview

The document provides an operation manual for an 'SXN' Running Tool used to run and set flow control devices into landing nipples. It describes the tool's design, features, assembly/disassembly instructions, and running procedure. The tool uses shear pins to jar the flow control device into position and dogs to lock it fully set before releasing from the assembly.

'SXN' RUNNING TOOL

82SXN
'SXN' RUNNING TOOL
OPERATION MANUAL

Design Overview

The ‘SXN’ Running Tool is designed to run flow control devices attached to
‘SRN’ and ‘SXN’ Lock Mandrels assembly and locate & lock them into the bottom
nipple at the end of tubing string.

The type ‘SXN’ Running Tool has been designed such that the Dog Retainer on
the running tool will not release the fishing neck of the lock mandrel assembly until
the fishing neck and expander sleeve have moved at least 80% of their travel.

The ‘SXN’ Running Tool is used to run and set, then release from the Lock
Mandrels assembly.

It has the following features:

a) It allows a variety of sizes or quantities of shear pins to be used to jar the

lock mandrel and flow control device into the landing nipple, depending on the
anticipated difficulty of packing interference.

b) Once the locking mandrel expander sleeve has fully moved down to full
distance in locked position, relative motion within the running tool is eliminated by
the Dog Retainer which locks the core to the body of the tool.

c) There are two shear pin positions in the running tool provided the option to
pin the tool for different run in position. One position causes the keys in the lock
mandrel to be retracted. This set up is used when running the ‘SRN’ or ‘SXN’ Lock
Mandrel with a no-go OD. The other position causes the keys of the lock mandrel
to be in the expanded position and is used when to run the ‘SXN’ lock mandrel.

Assembly Instruction
 Before assembly check that all parts are clean and free from wear and corrosion.

 Clamp the Main Mandrel (1) into vise with pin thread downwards.

 Install Retainer Dog (5) into the Main Mandrel (1).

Note: Apply heavy grease to the Retainer Dog (5) to help hold them in place.

 Insert the Core (6) into the Main Mandrel (1) and align the window hole of the Core (6) with the
window in the Main Mandrel (1).

 Insert the Offset Key (2) through the window of the Core (6) and the Main Mandrel (1) and align
the Offset Key (2) key hole.

 Make up the Shoulder Screw (7) into the Offset Key (2).

 Install the Shear Pins (4) into the Main Mandrel (1) and Core (6).

 Install the Retainer Ring (3) to the Main Mandrel (1) and secure with Set Screw (8).

 The tool is now completed and ready for test/use.

Disassembly Instruction
 Place the Running Tool in vice and grip onto the Main Mandrel (1).

 Unscrew the Set Screw (8).

 Remove the Retainer Ring (3), the Shear Pins (4) by drive them out of the Main Mandrel (1).

 Push the Core (6) until the Shoulder Screw (7) is visible through the hole in the Main Mandrel
(1).

 Remove the Shoulder Screw (7) from the Offset Key (2) and the Core (6).

 Slide out the Offset Key (2) through the window in the Main Mandrel (1).

 Pull out the Core (6) from the Main Mandrel (1) and remove the Retainer Dog (5) .

 Clean & perform visual inspection on parts for damages.

Running Procedure

 Make up the Lock Mandrel with the Running Tool. Ensure the Running Tool is properly pinned
to the Lock Mandrel using the appropriate shear pins.

 Prior to running, check that the locator dogs on the running tool are fully expanded and the keys
on the Lock Mandrel are fully retracted.

 Run the assembly to a few feet above the landing nipple into which the lock mandrel is to be
installed. Check the pulling and hanging weight.

 Lower the tool string to sit slowly in the NO-GO Landing Nipple (Type SRN or SXN).

Note: Light downward tapping may be necessary to overcome friction between the packing and seal
bores.

 Jar down to set the Lock Mandrel (Type SRN or SXN)

 Continue to Jar down to shear the pin in the SXN Running tool.

Note: Slight upward jarring may be necessary to help trip the Locating Dogs.

 Apply an upward strain on the wireline to ensure positive locking.

 Jar upwards to shear the lower shear pin in the running tool and release the running tool from the
lock assembly.

 Retrieve the wireline toolstring to surface.

Note: If the lock has not properly locked into the nipple, upward jarring will pull the the lock
mandrel out of the nipple and the assembly will be returned to surface with the wireline tool string.
Comparison of pulling and hanging weights before and after setting operation should indicate this.

 If the lock was set accidentally, the running tool must be sheared release from the lock, and
retrieve the Lock Mandrel assembly with a ‘GR’ Pulling tool.
