CALVARY CONVENTION CENTRE (CCC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Auditorium Design Analysis

The Calvary Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur houses various facilities including a 5,000 seat auditorium. The auditorium has a horseshoe shape with curved and flat walls to reflect sound waves back into less exposed areas. Though large, sound absorbing materials keep reverberation time at a suitable 0.9 seconds. The fan-shaped seating arrangement and combination of concave and stepped surfaces help distribute sound quality throughout the hall.

ACOUSTICAL IN ARCHITECTURE
Architectural acoustics refers to the relationship between sound produced in space and its
listeners, of particular concern in the design of concert halls and auditoriums.

AUDITORIUM DESIGN ANALYSIS

1.1 Shape and Massing
Horseshoe-type hall with a combination of both curved and flat walls. The
concave shape of the walls reflects the sound waves back into areas with less exposure to the
sound source.
1.2 Volume
The optimum size of the auditorium depends on the function of the hall and the
audience capacity. Although the CCC auditorium is built to accommodate a large audience
capacity, the sound-absorbent materials effectively brought down the reverberation time to 0.9
seconds which is suitable for speeches.

1.3 Levelling of stages and seats

Correct levelling of the auditorium seats ensures that the sound waves
reach all the occupants of the auditorium without obstructions. Raked seats increase the volume
and clarity of sound, especially for audience members sitting near the back.

1.4 Seating Arrangement

The seating arrangement in the auditorium is in a fan-shaped
configuration to allow a greater seating area that is closer to the stage. This allows the louder
and clearer sound quality to be heard throughout the hall. The configuration decreases the
chance of sound waves being affected by obstructions as compared to a shoebox type hall.

1.5. Layout of the boundary surface

The auditorium implements a combination of concave-shaped and
stepped ceiling systems that reflect the sound back down to the audience. The concave shape
also helps concentrate the sound intensity and increases the volume of the sound as it travels
toward the audience.
