LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS

English Grade 12(Q2-Wk 6-7)
EAPP- Gather information from surveys, experiments, or observation

I. Introduction

Have you seen the 2022 presidential bets poll? Can the possible frontrunner
of the next presidential election bear a monumental task in leading the
nation? Moreover, how is information in public opinion polling gathered?

These Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) will help you to determine the diverse
types of instrument depending on the research being conducted. A valid
instrument will directly answer the research questions.

II. Learning Competency

Gather information from surveys, experiments, or
observations (CS_EN11/12A-EAPPIIe-j-8)

III. Objectives

After going through these Learning Activity Sheets, you are expected to:

1. Identify the three types of survey questions

2. Identify the three types of observation
3. Determine the steps in conducting an experiment

1
IV. Discussion

What is a survey?

Three Types of Survey Questions

What is an experiment?

1. Make observations
2. Develop the hypothesis
3. Design the experiment
4. Conduct the experiment. Replicate the experiment to ensure the
reliability of the results.
5. Analyze the results.
6. Decide on whether to accept or reject the hypothesis based on the
results.

What is an observation?
An observation describes the behaviour of the subjects in a naturalistic
or laboratory setting. This instrument is utilized to crossvalidate the
result of other instruments.
An observation is beneficial when the respondents are unable to answer
interview questions and questionnaire under valid reasons. An example
would be the description of behaviour and setting of an infant.

Three Types of Observation

1. Participant and Non-participant Observation

In participant observation, researcher interacts with the subject. In
certain cases, researchers immerse with the people and become a part of
their culture.
In non-participant type of observation, researchers observe the
subjects without interacting with them. Thus, the subjects are unaware
that they are being observed. Examples are observations of animals and
children.

2. Structured and Unstructured Observation

Structured observation takes place when there is a list of behaviour
that the researcher wants to observe.

2
Unstructured observation is when the researcher allows behaviour to
emerge. Afterwards, this observed behaviour is recorded through an in-
depth narrative account.

3. Covert and Overt Observation

Covert observation happens when the subjects are not aware that they
are being observed.
Overt observation happens when the subjects are aware that they are
being observed.

V. Activities

Activity 1: Identify the research instrument based on the given description.

Write your answers in the space provided.

_____________ 1. Type of questions that allows respondents to give brief

explanations or answers.
_____________ 2. Consists of planned questions to determine the respondents’
attitudes, perceptions, and opinions.
_____________ 3. When the researcher allows behaviour to emerge.
_____________ 4. Happens when the subjects are not aware that they are being
observed.
_____________ 5. Requires information such as age, sex, date of birth, and
place of birth.
_____________ 6. Takes place when there is a list of behaviour that the
researcher wants to observe.
_____________ 7. Describes the behaviour of the subjects in a naturalistic or
laboratory setting.
_____________ 8. Is a scientific procedure to come up with a discovery,
test hypothesis, and the like.
_____________ 9. Happens when the subjects are aware that they are
being observed.
_____________ 10. Type of questions that allows respondents to give brief
explanations or answers.
