Exercise 2 Refraction

This document contains refraction seismic data from a geophysics exercise and requests a 1-2 page interpretation of the data. The interpretation should include: the velocities of 2 layers determined from the data; that there are 2 layers present; the thickness of each layer calculated from the velocities and travel times; the angle of incidence at each interface; and an identification of the likely rock types based on the velocities. It also contains a figure and requests calculations of velocities, angles, and thickness from the figure.

Exercise 2- REFRACTION
1. Using the REFRACT program, write a short interpretation (1-2 pages only) of the following
refraction data. Assume a shot offset of 10.

(Guide questions: What are the layer velocities? How many layers are there? How thick are the
layers? Angles of each layer? Based on the velocities of each layer, what types of rocks are
shown? You may also attach the plot and section profile generated).

2. Refer to Figure 1. Calculate the velocities, the angle of incidence on the upper and
lower interface and the thickness for each layer.
