(Inverters - I)

1. What is the difference between an Inverter and an Oscillator?


2. What are the limitations of simple series inverter? How can we overcome them?
3. Discuss the design aspects of series inverter.
4. What do you understand by “Complementary commutated inverter” & “Auxiliary
commutated inverter”?
5. Draw the power diagram for following inverters:
(i) Mcmurray halfbridge inverter
(ii) Modified Mcmurray full bridge inverter
(iii) Mcmurray-Badford inverter.

Assignment: 2
(Inverters - II)

1. The 1- modified Mcmurray full bridge inverter is fed by a dc source of 220V. The dc
source voltage may fluctuate by 10%. The current during commutation may vary from
10 to 50A. Obtain the value of the commutating components if the thyristor turn-off
time is 10sec. Also find R. Assume safety factor = 2.5.
2. A single phase full bridge inverter has a resistive load of R = 5  and the dc input
voltage Edc = 50V. Compute: (1) The RMS output voltage at fundamental frequency (2)
The output power Po (3) The average and peak current of each Thyristor (4) The peak
reverse blocking voltage of each thyristor.
3. “Force commutated inverters are preferred over line commutated inverters” Justify.
4. State True or False for the following statements. Give reason for your answer:
(i) In series Inverter, maximum Inverter frequency is less than the circuit
ringing frequency.
(ii) R2 < 4L/C in Series Inverter.
(iii) McMurray Inverter is an Auxiliary Commutated Inverter.
(iv) McMurray–Bedford half bridge Inverter is better than modified McMurray
inverter.
(v) McMurray – Bedford half bridge Inverter is an Auxiliary commutated
inverter.

(Choppers - I)

1. “Chopper can be considered as DC transformer.” Justify.


2. Show that the critical inductance in the load circuits of a step down chopper is
proportional to [x * (1 – x)] where x is the duty cycle.
3. A type-A chopper operating at 2 KHz from a 100 V. dc source has a load time constant
of 6 ms and load resistance of 10. Find the mean load current and the magnitude of
current ripple for a mean load voltage of 50V. Also calculate the minimum and
maximum value of load current.
4. For a type-A chopper feeding an RLE load, obtain the expression for the maximum
value of RMS current rating for the free wheeling diode. Assume that load current is
ripple free.
5. An RLE load is operating in a chopper circuit from a 500 V. dc source, for the load
L=0.06H, R=0 and constant E. For a duty cycle of 0.2 find the chopping frequency to
limit the amplitude of load current excursion to 10A.

1. “In 1st quadrant chopper, the ripple factor is unity when Ton = Toff.” Justify.

(DC Drives - I)

1. The speed of a 15hp, 220V, 1000rpm dc series motor is controlled using a 1-phase half-
controlled bridge converter. The combined armature and field resistance is 0.2Ω.
Assuming continuous and ripple free motor current and speed of 1000rpm and k=0.03
Nm/amp2, determine (a) motor current (b) motor torque for a firing angle α =30º. AC
voltage is 250V. Derive any formula used.
2. A 100kW, 500V, 2000rpm separately-excited dc motor is energized from 400V, 50Hz,
3-phase source through a 3-phase full converter. The voltage drop in conducting
thyristors is 2V. The dc motor parameters are as under:
Ra= 0.1Ω, Km = 1.6 V-s/rad. La = 8mH.
Rated armature current = 210 A. No-load armature current = 10% of rated current.
Armature current is continuous and ripple free.
a) Find the no-load speed at firing angle of 30º.
b) Fine the firing angle for a speed of 2000rpm at rated armature current. Determine
also the supply power factor.
3. Draw the equivalent circuit of dc series and shunt motors. Also give necessary
equations.
4. Discuss torque speed and armature current Vs speed characteristics of DC series motor.

(DC Drives - II)

1. Only draw power diagram & waveforms for following:


(i) 1-phase semi converter DC drive
(ii) 1-phase full converter DC drive
(iii) 3-phase semi converter DC drive
(iv) 3-phase full converter DC drive

2. Derive the formula for Vdc for following drives:


a. 1-phase semi converter DC drive
b. 1-phase full converter DC drive
c. 3-phase semi converter DC drive
d. 3-phase full converter DC drive

3. A 600 V, 1500 rpm, 80 A separately excited dc motor is fed through a 3-phase semi-
converter from 3-phase 400 V supply. Motor armature resistance is 1  and armature
current is assumed constant.
(a) For a firing angle of 45º at 1200 rpm, compute the rms values of source and
thyristor currents, average value of the thyristor current and input supply power factor.
(b) Repeat part (a) for a firing angle of 90º at 700 rpm

(AC Drives)

1. Draw the per phase equivalent circuit of 3- Induction Motor and its torque
speed characteristics.
2. Classify the AC drives and state their applications.
3. Compare AC and DC drives.
4. Define slip. What is slip power recovery? What is its importance?
5. Justify: V/f Control scheme is most preferable for speed control of AC
drives.
6. Briefly explain static Scherbius drive.
7. A three phase star connected 50 Hz, 4 pole induction motor has following
parameters in ohms per phase referred to stator :
R1=R2=0.034 Ω and X1=X2=0.18 Ω. The motor is controlled by V/F control
method. Determine the following at 10 Hz.
(i) The breakdown torque as a ratio of its value at rated frequency for
motoring and braking
(ii) The starting torque in terms of their value at rated frequency

8. A 3-phase, 400 V, 15kW, 1440 rpm, 50 Hz, star-connected induction motor


has rotor leakage impedance of 0.4 + j 1.6Ω. Stator leakage impedance and
rotational losses are assumed negligible. If this motor is energized from 120
Hz, 400 V, 3-phase source, then calculate:
(a) The motor speed at rated load
(b) The slip at which maximum torque occurs and
(c) The maximum torque.
