Experiment #: Date:

Name:
Topic: Chemical Equilibria

Aim
To investigate Le Chatelier’s Principle of Chemical Equilibria

Background
Equilibrium systems involve reversible reactions in which the forward and reverse
reactions are occurring at equal rates. If an equilibrium system remains undisturbed, the
concentration of each chemical species in the system will remain constant indefinitely. Le
Chatelier predicted how an equilibrium system would respond to changes imposed on it.
According to Le Chatelier’s principle, if the system is disturbed, it will respond in such a way to
minimize the change and go back to equilibrium. A new equilibrium position is reached.
In this experiment you will investigate equilibrium systems involving transition metal
complex ions. These systems contain colored substances which will enable you to determine the
direction of equilibrium shifts based on color changes.

Apparatus and Materials

Test tubes (5), Test tube rack (1), beaker (2 x 50 ml), ice, hot plate, teat pipettes
Dichromate/chromate solution, Copper (II) sulphate solution, Cobalt (II) chloride solution, Iron
(III) chloride, Ammonium thiocyanate, Concentrated HCl, Distilled water

Instructions
• In the Observation section, (i) state the initial colour of the equilibrium system and (ii)
record the colour change after the addition of each reagent
• In the Inference section, (i) write an equation for the equilibrium system, (ii) state the
direction in which the equilibrium shifts, (iii) briefly explain the equilibrium shift/colour
change observed
PROCEDURE OBSERVATIONS INFERENCE
Dichromate/chromate equilibrium

Add about 1 cm3 of the equilibrium

mixture to each of two test tubes

(a) Note the initial colour of the

solution in test tube 1. Keep test
tube 1 as a control.
(b) Add three drops of NaOH to test
tube 2 and record the colour
change.
(c) To the same test tube 2, add three
drops of HCl and record the colour
change.

Hexaaquacopper(II)/tetrachlorocuprate
(II) equilibrium

Add about 1 cm3 of the equilibrium

mixture to each of two test tubes

(a) Note the initial colour of the

solution in test tube 1. Keep test
tube 1 as a control.
(b) Add concentrated HCl dropwise
to test tube 1 until a colour change
is observed. Record the colour
change.
(c) To the same test tube 2, add
distilled water and note the colour
change.

Hexaaquacobalt(II)/tetrachlorocobaltate
(II) equilibrium

Add about 1 cm3 of the equilibrium

mixture into each of three test tubes.
(a) Note the initial colour of the solution in
test tube 1. Keep test tube 1 as a control.

(b) (i) To the test tube 2, add conc. HCl and

record the colour change. (ii)Next, add
distilled water and record colour change.

(c) (i)Place second test tube in a hot water

bath and record the colour change.

(ii) Remove the test tube and place in an

ice bath. Record any colour changes.
Iron (III)/iron (III) thiocyanate ion
equilibrium
Place about 1 cm3 of the equilibrium
mixture into four test tubes.

(a) Note the initial colour of the solution in

test tube 1. Keep test tube 1 as a control.

(b) Add Iron (III) chloride dropwise to test

tube 2 and record the colour changes.

(c) Add potassium thiocyanate solution to

test tube 3 and record observations

(d) Add ammonium chloride to test tube 4.

Record observations.
