7 In June 2018, Mr Tan paid $420 for his petrol bill when the price of petrol
was $x per litre. In June 2020, the price of petrol had risen by 20 cents per litre.
By cutting down on usage, Mr Tan still managed to pay $420 for his petrol bill
for that month.
(a) Write down an expression in terms of x, for the number of litres of
petrol used by Mr Tan in June 2018. [1]
(b) If the amount of petrol used in June 2020 is 21 litres less than that
used in June 2018, form an equation in x and show that it reduces to
5𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 20 = 0. [2]
(c) Solve the equation 5𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 20 = 0, giving your answers to 3 decimal
places. [3]
(d) Hence, find the number of litres of petrol used by Mr Tan in
June 2020. [1]
The fuel consumption specification for Mr Tan’s car is 12.3 litres / 100 km.
Mr Tan thinks that if he had bought a new car with a lower fuel consumption
specification of 7.8 litres / 100 km, his petrol bill for June 2020 would have
been at most $250.
(e) Is Mr Tan correct in his assumption? Justify your answer with
calculations. [3]

8 In the diagram, A, B, C and D are four points on level ground in a park, with
B, C and D forming the three corners of a triangular pond. A bridge is to be built
across the pond from C to P where P is a point on BD, due west of C. The points B
and D are due south and due east of A respectively.
AB = 145 m, BD = 170 m , CD = 124 m and the bearing of D from C is 290o.
Calculate
(a) the bearing of D from B, [2]
(b) BC, [3]
(c) the length of the bridge CP, [2]
(d) the height of an observation platform located at D, given that the greatest
angle of elevation of the top of the observation platform from a person
walking across the bridge CP is 27o. [3]

(a) x white marbles and 2x blue marbles are then added to the bag. A marble
is now picked from the bag. Given that the probability that the marble is
7
not blue is , find the value of x. [2]

(b) In a game, the same bag containing 5 red marbles and 7 white marbles is
used. Two marbles are selected at random without replacement. If two red
marbles are obtained in the first attempt, a player scores 50 points. If one
marble of each colour is selected, both marbles are replaced and the player
gets a second chance to draw the marbles. If two red marbles are selected
in the second attempt, the player scores 30 points.
Find the probability that in a game, a player
(i) scores 50 points, [1]
(ii) does not qualify for a second attempt, given that he failed to get
two red marbles in the first attempt, [1]
(iii) scores some points. [4]
(b) A second circle, C2, with centre B, touches the circle C1 at exactly one
point, M. Given that M is vertically below A and that the circumference
of C1 is four times the circumference of C2 , find the coordinates of the
two possible positions of B. [3]
