Rules to be followed for English Language and Literature

Std XII ISC 2022

COMPOSITION
 This year the word limit is 350-400 words. This should come to
approximately-2 or 2 and a half sides of the Council booklet. Try not to
write longer—leads to unnecessary errors
 Composition should always be age appropriate. Do not write from the
perspective of a college student/ working middle-aged
person/grandfather. It has to be from the perspective of a 17 or 18year
old and whatever is within the scope of possibility of that age group. Do
not write a flashback from a grandfather’s perspective. – Now I am
eighty years old. When I was seventeen, I had this amazing adventure…
 Read the topic carefully and write within the scope of the topic.
Otherwise, there’s negative marking for being out-of-topic/irrelevance.
 The composition should not end in a dream unless asked in the topic.
 Avoid writing stories unless you are exceptionally good at it. Those are
the toughest compositions to write. First try to choose from the other
topics given.
 Narrative compositions are always written from the 1st person point of
view.
 Also remember a story and a narrative are different categories of
composition with distinct structures of their own. They are not inter-
changeable.

Structure/Language
 Paragraphs compulsory. You need at least three---introduction, body
and conclusion.
 Complete sentences only—with a subject, a verb and a predicate
 Use accurate grammatical sentences. Avoid long, winding sentences.
 Accurate punctuations
 Correct spellings
 Misuse or non-use of articles—the/a/an
 Errors of agreement of subject to the verb(Verbs to be adjusted to the
singularity or plurality of the subject)—All the students has reported to
the school on time . Should be—All the students have reported to the
school on time.
 Misuse of vocabulary-use simple words if unsure of the meaning or
application of the word
 Time- 3 P.M. ( P dot M dot---the full stops in between are compulsory)
 Tense errors –most compositions are written from the perspective of
past tense. Only if the topic involves planning for the future, do you
need to use future tense. Do not mix tenses.
 Use linkers (Firstly/Consequently/Next/Later/Afterwards etc) to link
ideas from one sentence/paragraph to the next
 Other than dates, all numbers to be written in words
 No American spellings (color/humor/catalog) or Americanization of
language (gotten etc)
 No contractions. Every word must be written in full---etc, I’m, hasn’t,
Didn’t, couldn’t, I’d
 Do not begin sentences with And/ But/ So/ Because
 Anyways is not a word. Its ‘anyway’.

POINT TO BE NOTED-These basic writing rules apply to directed writing,

answers in literature and comprehension also.

DIRECTED WRITING
 Strictly follow the pointers given. Each pointer is for 1 mark. Missing a
point means missing the mark.
 Learn up all the formats properly
 Roughly should be 200 words i.e. 1 and half pages of the council booklet.
 The name to be written thrice in SOP and Personal Profile
 Should be age appropriate. Particularly when writing SOP or Personal
Profiles, please do not write—I have work experience of five years here
and there. These are to be written from a seventeen/eighteen year old
student’s perspective.

PROPOSAL WRITING
Please look up the sample proposal on the ISC website—about setting up a
Science club. Follow the format to the T. No other options acceptable.
Remember ‘proposals’ are neither letters nor Notices
