Objectives: The learners will be able to…..

1. Demonstrate ability to complete the running stitch, back stitch, and blanket stitch.

Introduction to the Lesson/Hook:

Students will come in and cut out their KWL chart as I let them know that we will be learning how to hand stitch

today. They will then fill in the first two columns of the chart. We will do a think, pair, share to give students a

chance to share what they know and what they want to know about hand stitching.

Higher Order Thinking (HOT) Questions:

1. What are some ways that running stitch and back stitch are similar? How could they be used in similar
situations?
2. Which stitch is the most useful when it comes to repair clothes? Why do you think that?
Content to be presented in lesson:

“Great job everyone! As I was walking around, I heard some great things we already know about hand stitching,

as well as some things we want to cover today. Today we are going to be learning how to do three different types

of hand-stitching. We’re going to be building on the knowledge we learned last class when we learned how to sew

on buttons. Our objective for today is that we are going to demonstrate our ability to complete the running stitch,

the back stitch, and the blanket stitch. These three stitches are incredibly useful when it comes to making things or

fixing holes in clothing we already have.”

“Today the materials we are going to need include our needle and thread, some scissors, and three pieces of scrap

felt. I am going to explain the directions for today, and then you can gather your materials and get started. Today

you get to choose how you want to learn. At station 1, there are written directions with pictures. If you learn better

through reading things or looking at pictures, that’s the station you should go to. Station 2 is our video station. I

have emailed you links to different videos that you can look at as you learn how to do these stitches. I’m going to

ask that you put headphones in as you watch it, so feel free to pause, rewind, or rewatch as many times as you

need to. At stations 1 and 2 you can work at your own pace. At station 3, I am going to be modeling how to do

each of the stitches, and we are all going to work together. If you’re still unsure about how to thread and knot

your needle, or how to tie a knot at the end, I would recommend starting at station 3 and you can stay there, or

you can move to another station.”

*Switch slide

“It is my expectation that you finish at least two of your three samples today ready to turn in. I’m giving you the

opportunity to choose how you learn, and in some cases work at your own pace, but that comes with the

responsibility of finishing your work. If being at the station that your friends are at means you won’t finish your

work on time, then I would choose a different station. You are welcome to change stations if you need to, and you

are welcome to use any area of the classroom you prefer. If you finish early, you can catch up on any make-up

work you are missing, or you may start on your ugly sweater plushie that we will be doing next class. Who can

tell me what our steps are for today?” *Wait for student response. “Very good, let’s get started!”

*Students will be released to go to their stations. They will work until 5 minutes before class is over. They will

clean up materials and then do the closing activity.

Learning activities/procedures:

● Station 1 – Written Directions

o Students at this station will read through the directions with pictures. They will complete their stitches on

the scrap pieces of fabric.

● Station 2 – Video Directions

o Students at this station will watch the videos provided in order to complete their stitches. They will wear

headphones while watching the videos but are welcome to work together.

● Station 3 – Teacher Directions

o Students at this station will work in a small group with me. We will go through the steps together,

following the written directions. I will be modeling the steps for them, as well as answering questions.

● Ugly Sweater Plushie

o If students finish early, they will be able to work on their ugly sweater plushie. The directions and pattern

will be available at the front of the room.

Summary/Closure/Review of Content:

“Great work everyone! Thank you all for staying on task and showing me you can get your work done! Did you

like being able to work at your own pace? Awesome! In these last couple minutes before class is over, I want you

to finish filling out the last column in your KWL sheet. As you do that, what questions do you have for me

regarding what we learned today?”

Evaluation/assessment of student learning:

Students will be evaluated through two formative assessments. The first will be the samples they turn in. I will

look over them and make sure students are successfully accomplishing their stitches. The second will be the

learned column from the KWL. This will give students a chance to show what they’ve learned, and for me to see

if I’ve missed the mark in what I was trying to teach.

Modifications for exceptional learners:

● The subtitles on the videos can be translated to another language for my students that are ELLs.

Additionally, they can work at station 3 where the stitches will be modeled.
● Students that are exceptional learners can work at their own speed. They are able to work on their project

for next class if they finish early.

● Students with special needs can receive individualized, smaller group help at station 3.
