Heat Transfer 5 Semester Answer Question N o .1 (Part-1) Which Is Compulsory, Any TWO From Part-II Any TWO From Part-III Max Marks: 60 Time: 2 Hours

This document contains questions for a heat transfer exam. It is divided into three parts: Part I contains 10 short answer questions covering topics like the 1D heat conduction equation, Biot and Grashoff numbers, types of reflection, the significance of the Nusselt number, forced and natural convection, fully developed fluid flow, properties of ideal gases, and gray bodies. Part II contains 3 longer questions on calculating heat transfer through a wire, heat loss from a rod, and the differences between fin effectiveness and efficiency. Part III contains 3 questions, one calculating drag force on a plate using Reynolds analogy, another determining heat lost and bottom temperature of a plate, and the last defining total/spectral

HEAT TRANSFER

5th Semester
BRANCH: MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
Answer Question N
34o
1 .1 (Part-1) which is compulsory, any TWO from Part-II and any
TWO from Part-III

Max Marks : 60 Time : 2 Hours

PART-I
Q.1 Only Short Answer Type Questions (Answer All-10) (2X10)
a) Write 1-D heat conduction equation for spherical coordinates.
b) What is the physical significance of Biot number with fin
effectiveness?
c) Define Grashof number and give its physical significance. Give its
unit.
d) Define diffused reflection and how it is different from a specular
reflection?
e) Give the physical significance of Nusselt number.
f) Differentiate between forced and natural convection.
g) When a fluid flow through a tube is said to be fully developed ?
h) Write the physical significance of Grashoff's Number.
i) Show that for an Ideal fluid β = 1/T where thermal expansion and T is
in K. β is the volumetric coefficient of
j) What is a grey body?
PART-II
Q.2 a) Calculate the maximum current that a 2 mm bare aluminium (k = 210 W/m.K) (8)
wire can cany without exceeding a temperature of225°C, when exposed in
an ambient at 25°C with heat transfer coefficient of 10 W/m 2.K. Take
electrical resistance of aluminium wire as 0.037 Ω/m.
b) A very long 25 mm diameter copper (k = 380 W/m.K) rod extends from a (8)
surface at 120°C. The temperature of surrounding air is 25°C and the heat
transfer coefficient over the rod is 10 W/m2.K. Calculate:
(i) Heat loss from the rod,
(ii) How long the rod should be in order to be considered infinite ?
c) What is the difference between fin effectiveness and fin efficiency? Two pin (8)
fins are identical except that the diameter of one is twice that of other. For
which fin will (a) fin effectiveness (b) fin efficiency be higher ?
PART-III
Q.3 a) Atmospheric air at 400 K flows with a velocity of 4 m/s along a flat plate, 1 m (12)
long, maintained at an uniform temperature of 300 K. The average heat
transfer coefficient is estimated to be 7.75 W/m2.K. Using Reynolds Colburn
analogy, calculate the drag forceexerted on the plate per metre width.
b) Air at velocity of 3 m/s and at 20°C flows over a flat plate along its length. (12)
The length, width and thickness of the plate are 100 cm, 50 cm, and 2 cm,
respectively. The top surface of the plate is maintainedat 100°C. Calculate
the heat lost by the plate and temperature of bottom surface of the plate for
the steady state conditions. The thermal conductivity of the plate may be
taken as 23 W/m.K.
c) (i) What are the total and spectral emissive power of a black body ? (3+3
(ii) Define solid angle. +6)
(iii) Define total emissive power and intensity of radiation and show that E =
πI.
