B.TECH FOURTH SEMESTER UECU EXAMINATION DECEMBER, 2020

(Branch: Computer Science & Engineering)
BS 4301 PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS
Time: Three Hours Max. Marks: 70
Min. Marks: 22
Note: Attempt any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.

1. (a) A dice is thrown twice and the sum of the numbers appearing is observed to be 6. What is the
conditional probability that the number 4 has appeared at least once?

(b) A bag A contains 2 white and 3 red balls and a bag B contains 4 white and 5 red balls. One ball is
drawn at random from one of the bags and is found to be red. Find the probability that it was
drawn from bag B.

2. (a) If X and Y are two random variables having joint density function:

1
(6 − 𝑥 − 𝑦), 𝑖𝑓 0 ≤ 𝑥 < 2, 2≤𝑦<4
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = {8
0, 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑤𝑖𝑠𝑒

Find (i) 𝑃(𝑋 < 1 ∩ 𝑌 < 3), (ii) 𝑃(𝑋 + 𝑌 < 3) and (iii) 𝑃(𝑋 < 1|𝑌 < 3).

(b) A random variable X has has the following probability function:

X 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
2 2
P(X) 0 k 2k 2k 3k K 2k 7k2+k
1
(i) Find k, (ii) Evaluate P(X<6), 𝑃(𝑋 < 6), 𝑃(𝑋 ≥ 6), and 𝑃(0 < 𝑋 < 5)(iii) If 𝑃(𝑋 ≤ 𝑎) > 2 , find
the minimum value of a (iv) Determine the distribution function of X.

3. (a) Calculate the first four moments of the following distribution about the mean and hence find 𝛽1
and 𝛽2 :

x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
f(x) 1 8 28 56 70 56 28 8 1

(b) An irregular six faced dice is thrown 12 times. The expectation that it will give six even numbers is
twice the expectation that it will give 5 even numbers. If 1000 sets, each of exactly 12 trials are
made, how many sets are expected not to give any even number?

4. (a) (i) If X is a random variable such that E[X]=3 and E[X2 ]=13, use the Chebyshev’s inequality to
determine the lower bound for P[-2 <X < 8].
(ii) In a normal distribution, 31% of the items are under 45 and 8% are over 64. Find the mean and
standard deviation of the distribution.

(b) If t is an unbiased estimator of  , show that t 2 and t are biased estimator of  2 and 
respectively.

5(a) Find the maximum likelihood estimate for the parameter  of a Poisson distribution on the basis of
a sample of size n. Also find its variance.

(b) The standard deviation of a random sample of size 15 drawn from a normal population is 3.2.
Calculate the 95% confidence interval for the standard deviation (  ) in the population.

6. (a) Find the co-efficient of correlation for the following table:

x 10 14 18 22 26 30
y 18 12 24 6 30 36

(b)Find the rank correlation co-efficient for the following data:

x 68 64 75 50 64 80 75 40 55 64
y 62 58 68 45 81 60 68 48 50 70

7. (a) From the given data obtain the two regression equations using the method of least squares:

x 2 4 6 8 10
y 5 7 9 8 11

(b) A certain cubical die was thrown 9000 times and 5 or 6 was obtained 3240 times. On the assumption
of certain throwing, do the data indicate an unbiased die?

8. (a) A sample of 20 items has mean 42 units and S.D. 5 units. Test the hypothesis that it is a random
sample from a normal population with mean 45 units.

(b) The following table gives the number of accidents that fork place in an industry during various days
of the week. Test if accidents are uniformly distributed over the week.
Day Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat
No. of accidents 14 18 12 11 15 14
