A1 Level of German Language

If you see the standard format of Goethe Institute, there are 6 levels of
the German language– A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. The first level is A1
and many people think that A1 level is a very basic level and we won’t
be learning much in it. But I think we should see in detail what all you are
going to learn at the A1 level. So here step by step we are going to talk
about the German A1 level. Earlier, these levels were standard and
designed by Goethe Institute, Germany. A1 moreover covers a few basic
grammar topics and an application of grammar in day-to-day life that is
in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

I will request you to read the whole article so that you will get a complete
idea about A1. The first part we will talk about is grammar.

German A1 grammar covers the topics below:

 Basic Phrases
 Numbers
 Articles (definite and indefinite)
 Singular and plural nouns
 Verbs and verb conjugation
 Possessive pronouns
 Sentence formation
 Trennbare verbs
 Modal verbs
 Interrogative sentences
 Cases
 Prepositions
 Partizip II (Past tense)
 Imperative sentences
 Negation

And a few more

Goethe Institute recommends few reference books like Tangram, Studio

D, or Netzwerk (Netzwerk is being used currently) and in the future,
some other books from different Publications will be recommended but
most of the books will have almost syllabus. Few things will be more or
less, but almost 80% of the contents will be the same.

Now let’s talk about the content :

usually, these books have 12 lessons covering the most common topics
from our day-to-day lifelike-

Lesson 1 :
How to talk about yourself, how to introduce yourself, and get introduced
to people. Asking their names, where do they live, where are they from,
age, languages, countries.

Lesson 2 :
Talking about describing cities, places, and famous buildings in cities.
Also about transport and directions.

Lesson 3 :
Hobbies, friends, family, profession, weekdays, months, dates, time.

Lesson 4 :
Food and drink. Talking about taste, different food items, names and
placing an order in a restaurant, paying bills. Also about groceries,
shops, buying groceries, talking about prices.

Lesson 5 :
Hobbies, habits, planning some activities together, talking about places
or programs to go out.

Lesson 6 :
Talking about day-to-day routine morning to evening, talking about
weekly or monthly schedule, using verbs, framing questions.
Lesson 7 :
Communication in the workplace, talking with colleagues, writing emails,
talking about the work schedule, meetings, and telephonic
communication.

Lesson 8 :
Types houses and regular communication related to houses,
apartments, furniture, floor plans, renting a house in Germany,
describing house or apartment, using adjectives.

Lesson 9 :
About shopping, types of shops, online shopping, talking about shops,
going to a mall, buying things, and talking about clothes prices, size,
shape, color, brands.

Lesson 10 :
How to talk about health, communicating with the doctor, fixing
appointments at the doctor, discussing health issues, talking about diet
plans.

Lesson 11 :
About traveling, booking tickets, hotels. Talking about hotel rooms and
services, talking about tourist places in various countries.

Lesson 12 :
Other similar topics.

So if you observe, this syllabus of German A1 level usually covers all

your day-to-day topics so that if you travel to Germany for the first time,
you will be able to survive on your own. With books, you get audio CDs.
So this course covers your reading, writing, listening, and speaking. At
the ASAP German Institute, Pune after completing the course you will
have exam preparation sessions that are designed to prepare for
Goethe’s exam. In these preparation sessions, you will solve few mock
tests and then there will be a final exam at an ASAP Institute, which will
have almost a similar pattern like Goethe (Max Mueller Bhavan) exam so
that after passing the exam at ASAP you will be confident enough to
apply Goethe’s exam.

Basic grammer is cleared in A1

When we start with A1, we get introduced with the pronunciation of alphabets, numbers,
verb, vocabs, and learn to make sentences. Our starting is with greeting, how to greet
someone and what words and phrases we use in our day to day life like, good morning
is Guten morgen, for good health it is said gut Gesund things like this. Then the verb
conjugation, the time and how to describe the way.

In the starting level we go through the things we deal with in our daily life. So that we can
start with the grammer. If we make our basic clear we never face any problem in o

A1 level is the very first level of learning the German language. You can use and understand
the familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. You can introduce yourself and
others. You can also ask and answer questions about personal details, such as where you
live, people you know and things you have. You can interact in a simple way.

As one who has completed A-1, I would suggest the following: learn how to greet Germans
both formally and informally. Understand the alphabet and know how to count up to 100.
Learn how to conjugate the most common German verbs and understand the nominative
and accusative cases. The Dative and Genitive Cases come later. Learn how to order a meal
at a restaurant and check in and out of a hotel. Learn how to ask for directions. Learn
vocabulary that is pertinent like getting around in an airport, train station and walking
around in shops. I would learn German pronouns and other basic gra

Can I attend A1 German exam with self preparation?

Yes you can.

The A1 level is the most basic level and is simple but then do not fool yourself into believing
that German is a piece of cake. The grammar and words can be tricky.

Do not learn German like a “translation” of English as it is very different and some subtleties
can be told to you only by a person who knows German. Sentence formation is different in
German than in English.

Prepare yourself well in reading/writing/speaking and you can clear the exam easily.

My teacher once told me that it requires efforts to fail in the A1 exam so it is simple but not
a cakewalk.

Then we were asked to give the answer sheets and be prepared for speaking test. We were

2. tips by your tutor.
3. some mistakes could be on time rectified

most of the times teachers are more inclined towards qualifying the exam instead of
focusing on nature or culture followed by the language. due to this, we are just preparing
ourselves for passing the exam rather we should be focused on learning the language.

yes, you can.

I have been teaching A1 preparations many times and have had students that passed the
exams even with 1 month of preparation. It’s a focussed preparation, knowing exactly what
the exam is asking for and practising that. You will not be able to cover 12 chapters of an A1
book, however it’s not necessary either. You should cover 4 chapters and then focus on a
guide that shows you how to tackle the exam itself. There are certainly a lot of strategies
that one needs to know.

the more sample exams you do as preparation the better. Since you need only 60% , it’s
