and since then, it has been producing high quality petrochemical
products. TASNEE has large fully supported integrated production
facilities for polyolefin products. They are located in the industrial
city of Jubail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with total polyolefin
production capacities of 1.52 million metric tons per annum:

• Polypropylene (PP) 720,000 tons

• High density polyethylene (HDPE) 400,000 tons
• Low density polyethylene (LDPE) 400,000 tons

These production facilities are supported by world-class research

and development centre to ensure the high level of product
quality. Moreover, TASNEE places emphasis on high health and
safety standards and has a strong commitment to protecting the
environment.

We of TASNEE invite you to join us for an

informative trip through our product range.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS AND FACTS

Plastics in general are considered to be products of our throwaway

society and thus have gained a far worse reputation than realistic
considerations show.
In particular polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are
environmentally friendly. They do not interact with the
environment, are stable and non-toxic. They are recyclable,
generating energy and non-toxic effluents on incineration.

6.7
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS AND FACTS

If plastic products used are replaced where possible:

• The energy consumption to produce these products would increase by about 26 %.
• The emission of greenhouse gases would increase by about 97 M. tons. This is 30 %
of the amount of the agreed reduction goal for the EU at the Kyoto Conference.

This makes clear that plastics are becoming more and more important materials even
under the strongest environmental considerations. In particular PE and PP
• protect our consumption goods in lightweight, non-toxic and safe packages.
• insulate houses in a most effective economic way.
• play an important role in the building of greenhouses.
• reduce the weight of cars dramatically in order to save fuel consumption and reduce
emissions.
• ensure medical applications that would be non-existent without them.
• transports water and other liquids and allows safe containment.

Life without plastics at the present level would result in severe economic and environmental
difficulties for society.

POLYPROPYLENE – GENERAL INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermo plastic polymer with the chemical

structure –(CH2–CH(CH3))n–. It has three different types of
architectures:

• Isotactic polypropylene

This results in a more crystalline character of polypropylene.

• Syndiotactic polypropylene

This leads to a mixed crystalline and amorphous character.

• Atactic polypropylene

This results in a more amorphous character of the final product.

Polypropylene is used in a wide range of industries as well as

consumer goods applications.

CAPACITY AND PRODUCTION

TASNEE started their first venture in 2001, Saudi Polyolefins

Company (SPC), to produce polypropylene, with 450,000 metric
tons production capacity.

In 2008, this capacity has been increased to 720,000 metric tons

by using most innovative Novolen technology. This technology is a
flexible process used for the production of diverse polypropylene
homopolymers with different consistencies and melt flow rates
(MFR) for a wide range of applications.

CAPACITY AND PRODUCTION
APPLICATIONS AND PROPERTIES – RAFFIA GRADES

The Raffia applications of TASNEE‘s polypropylene can be divided into three major
categories:

Primary Carpet Backing: Polypropylene has increasingly replaced jute for primary
carpet backings in tufted and needle felt carpets. Primary carpet backing is considered
as the portion of the carpet that holds the tufted piles. It should also be noted that
polypropylene has made inroads into the secondary backing carpet market. The secondary
carpet backing is located underneath the primary carpet backing and is latex coated in
order to avoid slippage of the carpet on the floor.

Packaging Fabrics: Within the last 10 years polypropylene has become more prevalent
in the textile packaging market. Some of the current products are woven sacks like small
bags (25 kg), jumbo bags (1-1.5 tons) or bale wraps. The most common methods used
to produce tapes for textile packaging are water bath quenching, chill roll casting and
tubular blown films. The most popular method out of the three is water bath quenching.
The formation of sacks from woven tape can be carried out by a variety of techniques such
as cutting, folding and sewing.

Geotextiles: A geotextile is a woven or non-woven fabric that is designed to stop

water and ice erosion and cracking in roads, soil embankments and other construction
applications. It works by reducing the amount of water in contact with the considered
surface and by stopping soil migration. Tape produced for the geotextile market is made
in a similar manner as carpet backing tape. The main difference is that geotextile tapes
are typically pigmented with carbon black for additional stiffness, UV protection and for
good adhesion to the asphalt overlay.

APPLICATIONS AND PROPERTIES – FIBRE GRADES

There are three types of TASNEE PP fibre grades.

TASNEE PP H2250 for non woven fabrics: The largest fibre application of
polypropylene. There are three types of non-woven fabrics depending on the manufacturing
method: spun bonded, melt blown and thermo bonded carded web from stable fibres.
Applications are disposable surgical garments which are sterilized, comfortable, easy and
safely disposable and also protect medical personnel. Disposable diapers have universally
replaced cloth diapers for infants.

TASNEE PP H2245 for continuous filaments (CF) and bulk continuous

filaments (BCF): Polypropylene is a cost effective material offering stain resistance as
well as resistance to most chemicals. The low density and non hygroscopicity are most
appreciated. Polypropylene fibres are internally dyed which guarantees high color depth
and wash fastness. BCF yarns are long fibre filaments that are plied together to form
continuous bundles of fibres which are extruded, drawn, crimped and gathered with other
continuous filaments to be used in the carpet manufacturing.

TASNEE PP H2060 for Staple Fibre and Geotextiles: Polypropylene fibers have high
resistance to acids, alkalis and most solvents. It is an excellent cost effective material for
geotextile applications. High quality PP staple fibers are used for manufacturing nonwoven
geotextile fabrics by carding, laying & needle punching process. Application are for soil
stabilization, separation, filtration and protection used in road construction, rail track,
water reservoirs, lakes, tunnels, coastal rivers bank protection/cushion.

APPLICATIONS AND PROPERTIES – FILM GRADES

TASNEE produces PP H3030 for BOPP-films. BOPP-film is one of the important

application in packaging sector. BOPP film imparts excellent moisture barrier and
is, provides high tensile strength even at elevated temperatures and possesses
good impact resistance at very low temperatures. In the early 1960s BOPP film
was already used for food packaging and still today it is the preferred packaging
material in the snack food, bakery and candy industry. Snack food packaging is
the largest single application because BOPP film has excellent moisture barrier
properties, stiffness, gloss, printability and keeps crispness of the content. Special
coatings can provide excellent oxygen barrier properties if required. BOPP film is
also used in the electronics industry for electrical insulation of capacitors.

HD POLYETHYLENE – GENERAL INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION

The polyethylene resins consist of long molecular chains of the

chemical structure –(CH2–CH2)n–. These chains present many
types of different polymer structures. Depending on the type of
the polymerisation process, these chains also present different
degrees of branching, from small to long branches. The degree
of branching in the master back bone and the length of the side
molecules or branches are important factors and have a direct
impact on the final properties of the polyethylene resins.

In the case of high density polyethylene (HDPE) resins, which are

synthesised by low pressure polymerisation, the chains present
a low degree of branching with only short side molecules.
The type and length of branching affects the crystallization of
polyethylene resins. The shorter the chains and the lower the
degree of branching, the higher the crystallization degree of the
resin. Polyethylene resins present two distinctive phases which
coexist in the matrix. A crystalline part with high density and
high melting point and an amorphous part with low density and
total absence of a melting point.

CAPACITY AND PRODUCTION

TASNEE has made a major step into the future by starting an ethylene cracker
project which consists of 3 plants being located at TASNEE site in Jubail. The
Saudi Ethylene and Polyethylene Company is a venture project of TASNEE and
Sahara Olefins Company. The production capacities are impressive and listed in
the table on the following page.

The Advanced Cascade Process (ACP) technology is the most advanced developed
version of the Hostalen Slurry Process used to make multi modal high density
polyethylene resins. TASNEE produces HDPE for high quality applications such as
pressure pipes, high quality film, containers, drums and cans.

The advantage of the ACP technology:

• High stiffness and improved resistance to stress cracking
• Multi modal with high to very high molecular weight ends
• Online grade change without production shutdown
• Tailored properties to suit special applications

The reactors are set up in cascades having different process conditions which
allows the production of HDPE resins with multi-modal molecular weight
distribution as well as incorporation of defined co-monomer content in the longer
PE chain.

The balance of those properties is particularly required in the design of the resins
for pipe applications and depends on:
• Catalyst type
• Process used to make the polymer

Depending on the choice of the co-monomers and the polymerisation process

one obtains HD polyethylenes which differ in their morphology and degree of
crystallization.

APPLICATIONS AND PROPERTIES – FILM GRADE

TASNEE high density film grade (F0455) is produced using the

Hostalen ACP method that combines three reactors in series and
uses an advanced catalyst system. The combination of these state-
of-the-art elements results in outstanding film resin properties
such as stiffness, high impact and high tenacity performance.

The resins derived from this process present high quality

consistency, excellent bubble stability and high throughput rates.
The resins can be easily processed in typical blown film lines with
narrow thickness tolerances, very low gel levels, excellent film
optics and good mechanical properties. The film thickness can
go down to 8 μm.

APPLICATIONS AND PROPERTIES – PIPE GRADES

TASNEE HDPE PE 100 pipe grades are produced by the outstanding Advanced
Cascade Process (ACP) technology. The product obtained from this technology
is trimodal resin with improved product processability, combined with excellent
mechanical properties.

Pipes made from TASNEE PE 100 compounds are easy to join by fusion-coupling
and butt-joining techniques. They are straightforward to install, leak free, corrosion
resistant and provide better overall cost benefits for a pipeline asset owner when
compared to traditional.

Pipes need to be colored according to their application purposes (black, blue,

orange), and the color coding can be done by full coloration or through stripes.

LD POLYETHYLENE – GENERAL INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION

Low density polyethylene is the oldest of all polyethylenes and

was first synthesised in the early 1930s in England and the
principle of the manufacturing process has not changed much
ever since. The main area of LDPE is in film applications.

LDPE is produced under high pressure and hence the chains are
highly branched. The type and length of branching affects the
crystallization of polyethylene resins. The shorter the chains and
the lower the degree of branching, the higher the crystallization
degree of the resin. Thus, LDPE has stronger amorphous
characteristics and thus excellent clarity compared to other
polyethylenes and this favours it for shrink film applications.

CAPACITY AND PRODUCTION

Low density polyethylene is produced by Saudi Ethylene and Polyethylene Company

(SEPC). TASNEE uses the Lupotech T technology to produce LDPE. The reaction
takes place in tubular reactor at high pressure and temperatures.
The LDPE is transferred to compounding extruder to produce the final resins in
pellet form.

The advantages of Lupotech T:

• Easy processability of resins
• Covers complete range of LDPE grades including premium products
• High homogeneity and low gel level
• Stable and flexible operation
• Flexible resins resistant to chemicals

Depending on the choice of the polymerisation process, different types of grade

can be produced. They differ from each other in morphology and degree of
crystallization.

APPLICATIONS AND PROPERTIES – FILM GRADES

More than 50% of the total polyethylene usage are film applications due to
the outstanding properties of polyethylene. TASNEE low density polyethylene
is manufactured using the Lupotech T method and has certain advantages that
makes it most feasible to film applications:
• It does not allow water and steam to permeate but has a good permeability
for carbon dioxide and oxygen. These characteristics are especially desired for
packaging.
• Non-oxidizing acids, bases, salts and their solutions practically have no effect
on polyethylene.

In order to avoid photochemical oxidation by UV radiation which causes fine

cracks in the material, light stabilizers are being added to LDPE.

The film types and applications and requirements are shown on the following
page.
