This document discusses septic tanks and soak pits. It provides information on how septic tanks work by digesting organic matter, separating solids from wastewater, and discharging liquid into a drain field. Soak pits are described as covered, porous chambers that allow pre-settled sewage from septic tanks to infiltrate into surrounding soils. The advantages and disadvantages of septic tanks and soak pits are also summarized.

SOAK PIT AND SEPTIC TANK
KHEMAJI PARAB _17
How Does A Septic Tank Work?
• A septic tank will digest organic matter and separate float
able matter and solids from the wastewater.
• Water from your kitchen, bathroom etc. runs through one
main drainage pipe leading to your septic tank.
• Underground the septic tank starts the process of holding
the waste water. It needs to hold this long enough so the solids settle down to the bottom, while oil and grease floats to the top.
• After this process the liquid wastewater will then be able to
exit the tank into the drain field.
• This wastewater is discharged through pipes onto porous
surfaces. These allow wastewater to filter though the soil.
• Finally, the wastewater percolates into the soil, naturally
removing harmful coliform bacteria, viruses and nutrients Advantages of septic tank 1. Septic tank uses the natural method of waste decomposition and thus is good for the environment. 2. It has a long life span and lasts for several years. 3. Septic tanks are relatively affordable and economical. 4. Septic tanks are efficient in purifying the wastewater to the extent that the effluent can be used for groundwater recharge. 5. The maintenance cost of the septic tank is less. 6. It is very desirable for rural areas.
Disadvantages of septic tank
1. It is not suitable for highly congested areas 2. It must be cleaned at a regular interval of about two years. 3. In some cases, due to the lack of efficiency of the tank, it may lead to the contamination. 4. Due to the lack of proper maintenance, the septic tank may produce a foul odor. It may also aid the breeding of mosquitoes and flies. 5. During the rainy season, the overflow of sewage may lead to significant problems. 6. Regular maintenance is necessary for efficient sewage disposal. WHAT IS SOAK PIT?
• A soak pit is a covered, porous-walled chamber that allows
water to slowly soak into the ground and also known as a soak away or leach pit.
• And the pre-settled sewage from the septic tank is release to
the underground chamber from where it infiltrates into the neighboring soils.
• A soak-pit is a closed porous chamber that is directly
connected to a primary treatment unit of commercial or residential building and to slowly soak into the underlying ground it serves the function of letting the wastewater coming from the septic tank.
• The water is not pure which is coming out from a primary
treatment chamber and the primary treatment unit can be a septic tank, twin-pits, anaerobic baffled reactor, a biogas settler, etc. The effluent water which is coming out of these units is called greywater and before letting it into the ground soil this greywater must be subjected to a partial treatment ADVANTAGES OF SOAK PIT • With locally available materials it can be built and repaired
• For all users, the technique is simple to apply.
• .It requires a small land area.
• The groundwater bodies are also recharged by it.
• It has low operating costs and low capital costs.
DISADVANTAGES OF SOAK PIT
• To prevent clogging, primary treatment is required
• .It may negatively affect groundwaterand soil properties
• In a cold climate, it is difficult to realize.
• For high daily volumes of discharged effluents, it should be
avoided.
• The areas where soil conditions allow infiltration and the
groundwater table is at least 1.5 m below the soak pit then it is suitable.
