TENSES = TIME

PRESENT TENSE

SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE (INDEFINITE) RULES:-


= TO EXPRESS ROUTUNE , UNIVERSAL TRUTH, 1. FIRST FORM OF VERB (V1)
HABITS , PROCESSES, FACTS ETC.
2. USAGE OF S / ES WITH THIRD PERSON
SINGULAR i.e.- ( HE , SHE , IT)
3. USAGE OF DO / DOES + V1

EXAMPLES: - 1. HE PLAYS.
2. I LIKE TO EAT ICE CREAM.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE (PROGRESSIVE) RULES:-


= TO EXPRESS THE CONTINUITY OF ACTION IN 1. USAGE OF IS / AM / ARE
PRESENT.
2. FIRST FORM OF VERB (V1) + ING

EXAMPLES: - 1. I AM WRITING A LETTER.


2. THEY ARE PLAYING.

PRESENT PERFECT TENSE RULES:-


= TO EXPRESS THE COMPLETION OF ACTION IN 1. THIRD FORM OF VERB (V3)
PRESENT / RECENT PAST.
2. USAGE OF HAS / HAVE
3. HAS – THIRD PERSON SINGULAR
i.e. – HE / SHE/ IT
HAVE – WITH REST ALL WE USE HAVE.

EXAMPLES: - 1. HE HAS FINISHED HIS HOMEWORK.


2. I HAVE SEEN THAT MOVIE.

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE RULES:-


= TO EXPRESS THE COMPLETION OF ACTION AND 1. USAGE OF HAS BEEN / HAVE BEEN
CONTINUITY OF AN ACTION.
2. FIRST FORM OF VERB(V1) + ING
3. USAGE OF SINCE / FOR

EXAMPLES: - 1. I have been studying for three hours.


2. He has been playing football for a long time.
PAST TENSE
SIMPLE PAST TENSE (INDEFINITE) RULES:-
= TO EXPRESS THE ACTION OF DISTANT PAST. 1. SECOND FORM OF VERB (V2)
2. DID + FIRST FORM OF VERB (V1)
3. USE OF ‘ED’

EXAMPLES:- 1. They reached Goa yesterday.


2. I WROTE A LETTER.

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE RULES:-


= TO EXPRESS THE CONTINUITY OF ACTION IN 1. USAGE OF WAS / WERE
PAST. 2. WAS = SINGULAR
3. WERE = PLURAL
4. FIRST FORM OF VERB (V1) + ING

EXAMPLES:- 1. I was making dinner when she arrived.


2. WE WERE PLAYING YESTERDAY.

PAST PERFECT TENSE RULES :-


= TO EXPRESS THE COMPLETION OF ACTION 1. THIRD FORM OF VERB (V3)
BEFORE ANOTHER ACTION OF THE PAST.
2. USAGE OF HAD

EXAMPLES: - 1. He had met him before the party.


2. I had written an email before he apologized.

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE RULES :-


= TO EXPRESS THE COMPLETION OF ACTION AS 1. FIRST FORM OF VERB (V1) + ING
WELL AS CONTINUITY OF ACTION IN THE PAST.
2. USAGE OF HAD BEEN
3. USAGE OF SINCE / FOR

EXAMPLES: - 1. I had been working at the company for five years when I got the promotion.
2. The program that was terminated had been working well since 1945.
FUTURE TENSE
SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE ( INDEFINITE ) RULES:-
= TO EXPRESS AN ACTION IN FUTURE. 1. USAGE OF WILL / SHALL
 SHALL = I / WE
 WILL BE USED WITH I WHEN THE ACTION
IS FOR SURE.
2. FIRST FORM OF VERB. (V1)

EXAMPLES: - 1. It will rain tomorrow.


2. They will cook dinner.
3. If it rains, our bus will halt in the village.
4. You shall obey my orders.

FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE RULES:-


= TO EXPRESS THE CONTINUITY OF ACTION IN THE 1. USAGE OF WILL BE / SHALL BE
FUTURE.
2. FIRST FORM OF VERB (V1) + ING

EXAMPLES:-1. John will be running a marathon this Saturday.


2. I will be arriving at five o’clock.

FUTURE PERFECT TENSE RULES:-


= TO EXPRESS THE COMPLETION OF ACTION IN 1. USAGE OF WILL HAVE / SHALL HAVE
THE FUTURE.
