Filtration: Sizing Mega. Cartridge Sizing

This document discusses sizing cartridge filters for swimming pools and spas. It provides examples of calculating the required flow rate for different pool sizes and turnover rates. For a standard cartridge filter, it recommends a flow rate of 0.75 gallons per minute per square foot of filter area. For commercial pools, it recommends lowering the rate to 0.375 gallons per square minute to reduce velocity. It also notes that mega cartridge filters cannot be sized by flow rate alone due to their large surface area, and must consider the inlet/outlet port and internal plumbing sizes.

Sizing a Standard Cartridge Filter Sizing a Mega Cartridge Filter:

Because of the large square footage of the Mega Cartridge
Example: Filter, it can not be sized by a recommended flow rate, like
15,000 gallon swimming pool that requires an 8 the D.E., sand, or standard cartridge filters. As an example;
hour turnover rate. if we size a 450 sq. ft. Mega Cartridge Filter at a flow rate
of 1 GPM per sq. ft. of filter area, as we do with a standard
15,000 gal. ÷ 480 min. = 31 GPM
31 GPM ÷ .75 flow rate = 41 sq. ft. filter cartridge filter, it would mean that we can flow 450 GPM
through the filter. This would require that the inlet, outlet,
and internal plumbing would need to be at least 6”.
Commercial Pools & Spas:
The recommended flow rate for a commercial application On residential swimming pools, spas, and water features
is .375 GPM per sq ft of filter area This cuts the flow the filter should be sized at flows recommended by the fil-
through the filter in half. We recommend that the velocity ter manufacturer. The recommended flow rate is usually
be cut even further by using a dual filter system dictated by the size of the inlet, outlet ports, and the inter-
nal plumbing. (Figure 26).
