Calculation Note Fire Escape Stairs 02032022

This document provides the design criteria for steel fire escape stairs at the ROUM Hospital. It describes the structural concept, applicable codes, materials, modeling approach, and load assumptions. Finite element analysis software was used to model the 3D steel skeleton, facades, and apply wind, live, and seismic loads. Steel bars forming the beams, columns, and trusses were designed considering strength combinations of dead, live, and wind loads per applicable codes. Loads accounted for in the design include self-weight, steel and aluminum finishes, oxygen tanks, live loads, and wind pressures in different directions. Views of the proposed steel structure are also provided.

1 GENERAL

This report includes a description of the Structural Concept of the fire escape stairs in al Room Hospital, the design parameters as well as the methodology
adopted in the structural design.

2 CODES

The Codes followed in the Structural Design of the Project at hand with no violation for the UBC-1997 and LIBNOR norms NL 137 second edition 2013 are as
follow:

- Dead and Live Loads

According to UBC-1997.

- Wind Loads
According to UBC-1997 and LIBNOR norms NL 137 second edition 2013.

- Seismic Loads
According to UBC-1997 and LIBNOR norms NL 135 second edition 2013.

- Steel members Design

According to LRFD2000.

3 MATERIALS
Structural Steel
- Grade S235.
- Bolts grade 4.8 or 8.8 as per design requirements.

4 Global Concept

The proposed structure has to resist gravity forces as well as lateral forces (wind and earthquake).

5 MODELLING

The structures are modelled using finite element analysis software Autodesk Robot. It is a 3-dimensional model incorporating the stairs steel skeletons, façade
geometry and load, and all loading requirements, including wind effects, live loads and superimposed dead loads. The elements that make up the model are
summarized below:

Bars

These are modelled as 1D bar elements along their centerline. They represent the bars forming the beams and columns. The bars sections are determined
to resist the strength design combinations according to UBC 1997. These combinations are presented in Appendix 2B.

Claddings

These are to be modelled as 2D cladding elements with no structural properties. They are modelled to allow wind load distribution along the facades to the
steel skeleton.

Base Constraints

The constraint at the bottom of the vertical elements is represented as a pinned support.

Analysis of Results:

The above models will be used for the design of all bars forming the structure. They will also be used to assess the moments and shear forces due to wind
forces on the structure and its distribution through the elements.

6 LATERAL DESIGN CRITERIA

6.1 Wind Analysis

This paragraph summarizes the design parameters and standards according to which the wind pressures on the structures have been assessed:

Wind load is calculated following the UBC1997 code:

Following Method 2 (projected area method) for primary frames and systems.

P = Ce Cq qs Iw

Ce = 0.84 (Exposure B, Height above adjoining ground = 25 feet)

Cq = 1.3 horizontal any direction on vertical projected area, 0.7 upward on horizontal projected area, 1.2 upward on horizontal projected area
at the top story (1.2=0.7+0.5)

qs = 89 Kg/m2 (136.8 Km/h => 85mph => 18.6psf => 0.89 kN/m2) (see LIBNOR norms NL 137 second edition 2013 paragraph 3.1*)

Iw = 1 (importance factor)

Ph = 98 Kg/m2

Pv = 53 Kg/m2

P (top story) = 90 Kg/m2

* LIBNOR norms NL 137 second edition 2013 paragraph 3.1:

6.2 Seismic Analysis

This paragraph summarizes the design parameters and standards according to which the seismic loads on the structures have been assessed:

Seismic load is calculated following the UBC1997 code:

Base shear calculation:

R = 4.5 (Moment-resisting frame system / Ordinary moment-resisting frame / Steel)

T (Method A) = Ct (hn)3/4

Ct = 0.0853 for steel moment-resisting frames

hn = 10.5m (stair case height)

 T = 0.4975s

W = 193.6 KN as total load at base with the combination : 1.0 DL + 0.2 LL

 V (30-4) = 64 KN
 V (30-5) = 37.7 KN
 V (30-6) = 7.46 KN
 V (considered) = 37.7 KN

T (Method B) = 0.18s

T (Method A) x 40% = 0.4975 x 40% = 0.196 > 0.18 => Ft = 0

Base shear value will be divided on the 7 stories considered as follows:

Total area of the 7 stories = 53.19m2

193.6 KN / 53.19m2 = 3.64 KN/m2

Formula 30-15

Story 1 : Area = 5.8 m2 => 21.1 KN

Story 2 : Area = 6.45 m2 => 23.47 KN

Story 3 : Area = 13.93 m2 => 50.7 KN

Story 4 : Area = 6.02 m2 => 21.91 KN

Story 5 : Area = 8.06 m2 => 29.34 KN

Story 6 : Area = 7.53 m2 => 27.41 KN

Story 7 : Area = 5.4 m2 => 19.65 KN

= 21.1x0.94 + 23.47x1.82 + 50.7x3.07 + 21.91x3.92 + 29.34x5.14 + 27.41x7.09 + 19.65x9.14 = 828.8

F1 = 0.902 KN

F2 = 1.943 KN
