L.O: To explore plot in narrative writing.

Starter:

That literature is filled with trouble and conflicts and that is what makes it interesting.

Plot

A plot is the series of events providing conflict within a story.

Elements of plots:

1. Plot gives your story structure.


2. It interconnects and moves the elements of your story.
3. It answers the questions – what, how and why.
4. Plot establishes the causes and consequences.

The Narrative Arc: Conflict, Tension, Climax and Resolution:

Middle – Conflict:

 In order to engage your reader’s attention or sympathy, your protagonist must yearn/want something
immensely.

 What brings about tension / danger is the intensity of your character’s yearning and the challenges in
his/her way.
Activity 1: types of conflicts

Conflict is not only about external dangers like gun crimes, murders, chase scenes etc. There are different
types.

1. Character vs self
2. Character vs nature
3. Character vs character
4. Character vs society

Climax

Climax – Usually, this is the turning point in a story. A crucial event may take place that propels the protagonist
toward his/her inevitable end.

Series of events in a story can lead to tension building up.
