Curriculum Development Final Examination

The document discusses a final examination for a Master of Arts in Education program focusing on curriculum development. It examines the implementation of modular distance learning in response to COVID-19. Key challenges identified include limited printing resources to produce self-learning modules, the time required for printing and sorting modules, and inconsistent parent retrieval of modules. Responsive solutions employed were extending work hours and weekends for printing, using personal funds and equipment, and creating communication groups. Recommendations for improving implementation include sufficient funding, teacher training, and school head awareness of teacher concerns. Learning resources primarily consist of self-learning modules, with textbooks as references. Common challenges are learners not thoroughly engaging with modules and relying on answers, late submission of work, parents

Curriculum Development
Final Examination

A CLOSER LOOK ON THE CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION (LEARNING CONTINUITY PLAN) IN THE TIME OF COVID -19
Areas to Consider Questions Responses
1. What learning delivery modalities Modular Distance Learning Modality
are implemented in your
school/college?
2. What do you find favorable in There are no face-to-face with the
Learning Delivery Modality these modalities? students to stop the spreading of
Covid-19.
3. What challenges do you encounter With the adoption of modular
in the implementation of these distance learning where SLMs are
modalities? needed for individual learner’s use at
home, it has been a necessity to print
SLMs weekly. With this situation,
printing-related issue has been the
topmost challenge that I met as I
prepared the SLMs. The number of
printers in my respective school is
limited, the printers being used have
technical problems which include
paper jamming. The limited supplies
of bond paper is also a challenge
The second issue that I met
along the preparation of SLMs is the
unavailability of SLMs for
downloading and the large amount of
time spent for printing and sorting.
And lastly, the inconsistency
of the parents to get at retrieve the
modules of their children. Parents or
guardians are not following the
prescribed schedules given to them.
4. What responsive solutions were Confronted with the challenge
employed to address the challenges? of reproducing the SLMs for our
learners, given my situation of having
limited number of printing materials,
I resorted to extend my time in
reproducing the SLMs. I also bought
my own printer and bond paper from
my own pocket, still, I spent time
printing and sorting the SLMs even
beyond the prescribed working hours
or I did it at home.
I still worked late at night and
even during Saturdays and Sundays
aside from exhausting financial
resources just to have SLMs ready for
the distribution to the learners.
I created group chats to
inform the learners if parents fail to
get SLMs on time and I even conducted
Home Visitation to the concerned
students to talk with the parents and
the students about the problems and
gave some remedies about it.
5. What are your As to the teachers’ coping
suggestions/recommendations to mechanism to address challenges in
improve the implementation of these this Modular Distance Learning
modalities? Modality, the fund must be very
sufficient to cater all the needs in this
distance learning.
Since the teachers are new
to this, they must be given training
beforehand in the utilization of such
modality because it seems like we are
doing our very best but seems so
uncertain about it due to lack of
necessary trainings.
School heads must be fully
aware of the problems and concerns
of the teachers to come up with a
positive result in the implementation
of the said modality.
1. What primarily learning resource The Self Learning Modules
do you use with your learners? What (SLMs) are being given to the learners
other materials are used by students? in this kind of modality. The SLMs are
Are available textbooks and LMs still downloaded from the link given by
Learning Resources used? How are these textbooks and our area supervisor from the regional
LMs used? or division. If the SLMs are not
available, the teachers has the
Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) where
the textbooks and the Learners
Materials are used to be the
references.
2. What common challenges do you The challenges that I
encounter in the development, experienced the utilization of the self-
production, distribution and learning modules by the learners
utilization of learning resources? include (a) learners do not read the
modules thoroughly and just depend
on the answer key; it is followed by
the challenge on (b) not submitting
the learners’ outputs on time (c)
parents answer the modules on behalf
of the learner; and (d) learners skip
essay type questions and answer only
the objective type questions/multiple
choices; These challenges implies that
teachers consider that learners find it
difficult to accomplish the self-
learning modules as they are seen to
depend on the answer key or let their
parents do the task instead of them.
This can be supported by another
implication that learners are not able
to finish the task on time. As a result,
it will not be submitted on time. The
authentic learning can be hardly
acquired by the learners since they
are seen to depend on others in
accomplishing the modules.
3. What responsive solutions were The coping mechanisms that I
employed to address the challenges? adopt to address challenges in
learners’ utilization of self-learning
modules. So the coping mechanisms
include strengthening parent-teacher
communication to monitor the
progress of the learner in answering
the modules through phone calls, etc.;
checking the content of the SLMs
before it will be distributed for
utilization; and extending time of
completion of tasks. This implies that
teachers, parents and the learners
themselves play important roles in
achieving responsible and maximum
utilization of self-learning modules.
4. What are your The Department of
suggestions/recommendations? Education should design appropriate
learning activities and intervention
for the students to really learn in this
modality.
The teacher-adviser
should utilize monitoring and
evaluation tools for students’
learning.
We should strengthen
parent-teacher partnership on
facilitating learning.
Securing constant and open
communication with the parents and
learners.
1. How do you assess your learners? In order to assess the learning of the
What common formative assessment students, we are giving both written

summative assessment do you use? quarter, we gave our students a four
sets of Summative Tests in order to
assess if they really learn something
Assessment of Learning or not.
2. Do you make changes in the Yes. I do the contextualization kind of
assessment strategies in the SLMs or assessment strategies that depends on
LAS? the needs of the students to really
have a learning even there is a
pandemic.
3. Do you prepare assessment tools I do some Summative Tests as an
aside from the those found in the assessment tools that depends on the
SLMs or LAS? learning needs of the students during
the implementation of the said
modality.
4. What training activities along I have attended the In-Service
assessment have you attended? Training (National and by School) and
also the School-based Learning Action
Cell (SLAC) wherein we have given
insights about the assessment needed
in the implementation of the said
modality.
5. What aspect of assessment would Personally, I want to be more
you like to be more equipped with? equipped on preparing TOS most
especially in the implementation of
the said modality.
6. Suggestions Teachers must be given
seminars and trainings needed in
assessing students’ performance
amidst the pandemic.
1. Which The In-Service Training
training/seminar/workshop you (INSET) that was given by the Central
Capability Building attended did you find most helpful Office had been very helpful during
and relevant? the implementation of the said
modality.
2. What training activity would equip Any related webinars that
and enhance your competence as can really help the teachers to equip
teachers? and enhance our competence.
1. What challenges have you In the preparation stage,
encountered with parents and I had been confronted with the
learning aides? What support have challenge of reproducing the SLMs
you provided them? for our learner given our situation of
Parents/Stakeholders Support having limited supplies of printing
materials. The common challenge
that I had met with the parents was
the non-observance of the schedule
for the said activities.

And as teacher, I have

supported them morally and
financially (in terms of producing
SLMs from my own pocket).
2. What support have you received I received support from barangay
from external stakeholders to sustain local officials most especially when
continuity of learning? What support we conduct Home-visitation.
would you still need from them?
Suggestions/Recommendation s 1. How else can the DepEd/CHED The Department of Education must
higher officials provide assistance as ensure that before they will
you ensure continuity of learning in implement something, they must be
the new normal? fully ready for it. From the smallest
details up to the biggest, they should
be ready, because at the end of the
day, the teachers who are in the field
are the ones who suffered a lot. The
materials should be already printed
so that the teachers will not be
problematic on how to produce the
materials needed for the learners.
Instead of printing of modules, they
can give their full time to assist their
students in answering the modules so
they can really learn.
