GENERAL PHYSICS 1

Activity Title: Center of Mass

Activity No.: 2.1
Learning Competency:
Differentiate center of mass and geometric center.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Every object has its center of mass and geometric center. What
are center of mass and geometric center? Hello! I am Peter, a civil
engineer and knowing the center of mass is critical in designing
buildings and bridges.

The center of mass is the average position of all parts of the

object or system of objects and does NOT depend on gravity. The
center of gravity is the same with center of mass but depends on
gravity. Another term is the geometric mass or centroid which is the
center position of all points of a plane figure.

To understand better, study the illustration below.

The center of mass (COM) The center of mass does Centroid is for plane figures
and center of gravity (COG) not change but only the where the center of this
are at the center of this object. center of gravity. circle is the centroid.

During building construction, a crane operator has to make sure that the center of gravity
is at the body of the crane or else it will tip over.

Every object has its center of mass and center of gravity. One has to find its center of mass
and gravity or else the body will be unbalanced like how students balance academic works,
household chores, family time and personal time.

Activity Title: Center of Mass Date:
Activity No.: 2.1
Learning Target:
1. Determine the center of mass/center of gravity and geometric center of a body.
2. Explain the importance of finding center of mass and gravity.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS: For regular-shaped bodies, the center of mass is found at its geometric center.
For irregular-shaped bodies, the center of mass can be found mathematically or
through a simple procedure like the plumb line method.

Plumb line method:

1. Cut out the shapes on the next page. Paste it on a thick carton.

2. For the triangle, label each corner as X, Y and Z.

3. Hang the triangle at point X using a thumbtack or push pin.

4. On a string or needle thread, tie it to a bit heavy object. Tie the

other end of the string on your thumbtack (point X).

5. Trace the path of the string using a ruler and red pen. Wait for
the heavy object to stable before tracing.

6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 for points Y and Z. Label the intersection as point A.

7. Paste your output (not including the object) at the back of this answer
sheet.

8. For the irregular shapes, repeat steps 3 to 7. For points X, Y and Z, it

could be anywhere near the edge.

Question:

What have you observed with your shapes after hanging and locating the center of mass?
What is the importance of finding the center of mass/center of gravity of a body?
