ENGL 112 2021W2 Research Paper Assignment
ENGL 112 2021W2 Research Paper Assignment
For the Final Research Paper, write an original essay that addresses media representation in
relation to a primary source of your choice. Enter into a critical conversation by conducting
research into what others have written on your primary source or on the ideas that you examine
in your essay. Your Research Paper should include two scholarly secondary sources.
Deadline
Submit on turnitin.com and on Canvas through the assignment dropbox by 11:59pm (midnight)
on April 11th. Please submit your paper as a Word Document File. Your paper will be vetted by
the plagiarism checking software turnitin. Failure to submit your paper to both turnitin AND
Canvas will result in deductions for lateness. Late assignments will receive a 10% per day late
penalty.
You are required to bring a full draft of your paper to class on April 6th for a peer review
workshop (5%). The draft will not be graded, but completion of the workshop is for marks, and
requires a substantial draft of your research paper.
Format
Submit all essays in proper format or expect a lower grade. This paper must
• be approximately 1500-2000 words long (aim for 5 to 8 pages)
• be double-spaced
• use Times New Roman 12 pt. font
• have adequate margins (one inch all around)
• be formatted for standard white 8.5 x 11 inch paper
• use consistent academic citation style to format and document research
Skills
In addition to refining your critical thinking and communication skills, this assignment is
designed to develop skills listed on our syllabus’ Learning Outcomes, including:
• The ability to find, evaluate, integrate, and synthesize primary and secondary
source material (including quotations, paraphrase, and summary), develop a topic
into a thesis, and provide suitable authority and context
• The ability to document sources fully and ethically according to a current
scholarly documentation system (for example, MLA or APA)
• The ability to construct logically argued, evidence-based, and persuasively
organized paragraphs and essays, following academic conventions
• The ability to conduct scholarly research that enables you to enter into a critical
conversation with others that effectively establishes the originality of your
perspective by noting how it differs from the approaches of others
The assignment builds upon the standard thesis-based analytical essay and combines it with the
moves we have learned from They Say/I Say. Every essay needs to fulfill the core components
identified in the bulleted list above. Essays that deal only tangentially with course material and
those that depart from the topic without having received approval will receive zero for the
assignment.
Develop your own introduction and thesis before you enter into a critical conversation with what
“they say” and distinguish your own position by highlighting what is new and different in your
analysis.
Return to They Say/I Say for instructions on how to enter into a critical conversation with others.
