Introduction
Professional Practice

Practice of Profession:

Art of Practicing or Expressing the Skills Earned from

Professional Education
Architectural Practice

Encompasses range of activities of

• Organizing,
• Managing
• and Documenting

The Architectural project delivery process.

The Profession

Architecture is ‘considered’ to be an applied art in distinction

to the fine art, which is ‘considered’ not so practical

Practical aspects; Structure, arrangement, Utility, etc. and the

art – the aesthetics.

Architecture is about concretising the Human need/spatial/

considering Essential values, through buildings and
Structures that transform/change the Environment.
The Profession
With this definition; Shelter, Arrangement and Expression are
the essential attributes of architecture working in harmony
without dominating each other.

Architecture is complex due to the degree and scope of

integration that is necessary for creating a proper human
habitat.

Attempting to simplify the intrinsic condition will

unnecessarily compromise the result. This is one major
cause of the single dimensional work we see so much with
today’s works of Architecture
Evolution of the profession of architecture
Ancient:

Architect-Builder
• little distinction

Construction is an integrated craft

• master mason, master carpenter
• knew how to design, assemble labour & materials, estimate
costs
17th -20th century:

Introduction Of
• Scientific Knowledge
• Technically Oriented Disciplines/Eng
• Complex Construction Systems

Architects Became Focused on Functionality & Aesthetics

Distance of Architects from Contractors. And Formation of

the Modern Definition of Architectural Practice
Current Day:

Complex Requirements Arise To Safeguard The Health,

Safety & Welfare Of The Public;

• Legal; Liability Insurance, License, Registration

• Technical; Specializations; Materials
• Cultural Knowledge; Ways The Discipline Responds To
Social, Aesthetic, And Ethical Aspects Of Making The Built
Environment
‘‘We Shape Our Buildings; Thereafter They Shape Us.’’
Churchill
Current Day:

Projects are no more the responsibility of one discipline as in

the old times’ the ‘Master Builder’

Diverse disciplines/professions working together towards the

same goal as the project team referred as;
‘Composite Master Builder’ Bill Reed

This collaborative performance/process avoids the

‘reciprocal ignorance’ of individual disciplines
The Architect In The Building Industry
Leading the Team

The Comprehensive Training & Assumed Knowledge Of Art,

Science As Well As Holistic Approach To Design Problem
Makes The Architect Ideally Suited For The Leadership Of
Design Team.

Echoes Of The ‘Master Builder’ Remain With The Architects’

Responsibility For Orchestrating & Coordinating The Works Of
Many Discipline
Leading the Team

Involves Discussions Through The Entire Design &

Construction Phase & Beyond

Requires Skills; Design, Engineering, Managing, Supervision

And Communication

Continuous Revision Of Works Is Often Necessary
