SUBJUNCTIVE

The subjunctive (as opposed to the indicative) is used with certain verbs such as: advise, ask, beg, demand, insist,
prefer, propose, recommend, request, require, specify, stipulate, suggest, vote. The verb will always go in the base
form, that is, 3rd person singular (or any other conjugation) will NOT be used. For example, the verb to be will be
used as be, NOT am, is, are, was, were, etc. The negative of the verb is formed with the word not preceding the verb,
instead of don’t, doesn’t or didn’t.

The store recommended (that) the customer pay cash in order to get the discount.
The boss demanded (that) I not arrive late anymore.
We propose (that) Diana be named the class president (by the other students). (passive)
The contract stipulates (that) everyone take a polygraph test.
The director recommended (that) we not be late to the meeting.
I advise (that) you be more friendly with your co-workers.
We request (that) you not smoke inside the house.
The tenant begged (that) the landlord not evict her.
The rental agreement specifies (that) we not have any loud parties.
The law requires (that) a person be at least 18 years old to vote.
The doctor recommended (that) the patient take the medicine with food.
The president proposed (that) his cabinet vote on the law.
I suggest (that) the problem be solved by the owner of the apartment. (passive)
I must insist (that) everyone take off their shoes before entering my home.
The lawyer requested (that) his client not speak to the press.
I suggest (that) your dog be kept on a leash (by your kids). (passive)
I prefer (that) the housekeeper come on Thursdays instead of Fridays.
I only ask (that) you take the necessary precautions before visiting us.

These expressions are also followed by the subjunctive: It is crucial/essential/imperative/vital/important/critical.

It is crucial (that) the passengers fly with a mask on.


It is imperative (that) she attend the meeting.
It is critical (that) you not touch this button.
It is vital (that) the patient be kept in isolation (by the nurses/doctors). (passive)
It is important (that) the prisoner not be permitted to escape from jail (by the guards). (passive)
It is essential (that) he take his medicine every 8 hours.
It is imperative (that) the patient not miss a session with the psychiatrist.
It is important (that) the baby be fed every 3 hours (by his mother/nanny). (passive)

coupon code: a numerical or text code to give clients a discount when they buy a product online
product placement: to advertise a product on TV/movies, etc. to get the attention of consumers
comparative marketing: promoting a product based on comparing it to the competition
search engine marketing: showing a product on Google when you conduct a search
celebrity endorsement: when a famous person helps to advertise a product
loyalty program: rewards given to frequent clients
word of mouth marketing: when happy clients tell other people about their satisfaction with a product
