Gerund or To Infinitive?
GERUND: reporting --------------------------------------- TO INFINITIVE: to report

• Some verbs followed by a GERUND:


Consider, Admit, Practise, Keep, Prevent, Imagine, Quit, Suggest

• Some verbs followed by an INFINITIVE:


Decide, Hope, Promise, Want, Have, Learn, Manage, Promise, Ask, Plan

• Some verbs followed by GERUND & INFINITIVE form


Like, Love, Prefer, Continue, Hate, Make, Try, Start, Wish, Begin

Some GERUND rules:


• After verb TO BE as complement: My hobby is writing essays

• As an object: I like working here

• As a subject: Studying is hard

• In present/ past continuous tenses: I am/was working in a sugar factory

• As an object of prepositions like IN, FOR, OR, BEFORE, AFTER: Thanks for inviting us/

I’m interested in working…

• After some expressions like IT’S WORTH, IT’S NO USE: It’s worth checking space

again

Some INFINITIVE rules:


• To express purpose: We went to the shopping center to buy a pair of gloves

• After some adjectives like HAPPY, SORRY, GLAD, BAD, NICE: Nice to meet you/ I am

glad to hear it

• Be + Adjective to express opinion: It’s good to see you/ It’s easy to study

• With some expressions like IT’S TIME, I AM READY: I am ready to go/ It’s time to go

• After Going To: I am going to inspect the area/ Are you going to check the office?

• Verb + Object + Infinitive: I ordered Lucas to report the situation

• Would + like/love: I would like to travel
